Last Saturday, I held the last session of the Financial Life Workshop where I showed attendees how to build a personal brand and monetize their knowledge. 

It was a bit unconventional. 

No slides. No writing board. 

All I did was speak from the heart, sharing my eight-year journey with eager listeners. 

One thing that stood out is how often we complicate this thing. 

Your brand is what you want to be known for. 

Maybe that's your job, or a skill you have built over the years. 

It could be something that comes naturally to you. 

What counts is showing others how it has helped you and can help them, too. 

Then show up and spread that message. 

After 2 hours unpacking personal branding and fielding questions, I say FLW25 was a resounding success.

When you're studying something that's so relevant to your work (or project), it feels different. 

Like eating toast bread (with the crunch)-level satisfying. Like, you're reading for love, not simply to ace an exam.

Do you get tired of all the rules too?

I remember when I began blogging on WordPress back in 2014, and they would share all these lessons about writing and blah. And one day, I saw an article that said, "learn the rules so you can break all of them." 

Honestly, that was the most freeing statement I ever saw. 

Because all these "how to" suddenly start to feel like a noose tightening around your neck. 

People can't simply 'be' anymore without putting up a performance. 

I want to be. 

I want to do a great job, go home satisfied knowing that I did my best, and not worry about some office politicking and showing face. 

I want to write and not think about whether it's educating or entertaining (go watch Kevin Hart if you want a laugh), because I have something to share. 

I want to put on my camera, make a video (and watch some online) without the dramatic edits and flashing lights. 

I love to create. I want to create and give it away when someone needs it, without being salesy or pushy or soft selling or told I'm giving it away for free when I can sell it. 

Heck, maybe I'm asking for too much because I remember a time when life was easier. Or at least less demanding on a public scale.

Now, it's performative showbiz dressed up as value creation. 

I'm exhausted.

If you're ready to jump into a new role or make a career switch then a skills gap assessment may help you. 

Here's how to run it for yourself. 


A gap assessment is how you discover what you already know and what you need to know to become ideal for the role you're seeking. 


📌Step 1: 

Make a detailed list of everything you've done throughout your career. 

You're not writing this like you would a CV, but more like a career story. 
- where did you work 
- what was your role 
- what kind of work did you do
- what skill(s) were involved in each work 

This step is focused on the "as is" part of your career story. Don't be shy here. Even though the work seemed inconsequential, out it down anyway. 


📌Step 2: 

Go to online job boards and find at least five (5) job Ads for the role you're interested in. If you know the specific industry you'd like, narrow down your search to those. If you don't, find anything closely related to what you like. 

- what are the responsibilities for this role
- what skills are required 
- are there any certification needs 
- what team will you closely work with 

This step is focused on the "to be" part of your story. 


📌Step 3: 

Map the "as is" to the "to be". 

- where have you already demonstrated the skills required
- what is required that you lack 
- is this really what you want to do next 

This step will show you what skills are transferable and which ones you need to learn. It'll also help you decide if this is really what you want to explore. 


📌Step 4: 

Go on LinkedIn and search for people who are already in the roles you want. Bonus if you can find someone in the company you want to be at too. 

- scan their profiles to see their career journey, skills they got, certifications if any
- how long have they been working in this role 
- was this a progression or a career switch

Then send a message saying: 

"Hi x, I looked through your profile and can see you are a YY in XX company. I'm interested in exploring opportunities in this role and was hoping we could have a chat about this." 

Then ask all the questions you need answers to. Be sure to validate the skills you found and if they're indeed useful on the job. 


📌Step 5: 

Once you've figured out the gaps in your knowledge and skills armoury, it's time to learn. 

- search relevant online platforms like coursera, udemy, edX, etc. 
- commit 3 - 6 months to learning
- apply for jobs while learning so you can understand the interview process and what kind of questions are typically asked 
- find opportunities to practice what you're learning in your current role or seek outside
- update your CV 


This was the process I used when I wanted to move from Audit to Risk Management, and then between roles in RM too.

How much is too much to spend on rent? 

A variation of this question came up in a financial literacy class. We were working on a budget and then thinking of how to save costs on a N200k monthly salary. 

Here's the deal. 

The reality of the current economy means that a lot of things are more expensive than before. 

This isn't restricted to Nigeria alone. 

I live in London and rental cost is off the roof. Inflation is creeping in and comparing receipts of items I bought two months ago makes it obvious prices are rising. 

It's happening everywhere. 

So, how much should you spend on rent? 

The rule say to keep it under 30% of your annual income. That translates to about 3-4 months of your income. 

For most people rental cost will be the highest line item in your budget. For more expensive cities like Lagos, London, New York, etc., you may spend upwards of 40-50% of your income on rent alone. 

Is this ideal? 

There's no exact answer to this.

When it comes to budgets and saving, you should always consider "Opportunity Cost". 

What are you forgoing to have the thing you want?

If you choose to live closer to work, what are you sacrificing in added cost to make that possible? 

If you decide to live further away, what gives?

If you opt for sharing an apartment with friends or strangers, what's the cost?

Your comfort...

Your sanity...

More or Less to save and invest...


There's always a cost and the decision to accept it is one you have to make for yourself.

A year ago I experienced something that changed how I thought about opportunities and challenges. 

I'd woken up to one of those mornings when I felt like my brain could use a rest. 

So, I turned on a playlist for rain sounds and thunder, pulled down the window blinds and turned on the fan. 

Then something interesting happened. 

A few hours after being in this condition, I found myself thinking it was really raining outside. 

It wasn't. We had a bright and sunny day. 



Here's the thing you should get out of this: 

Your mind is powerful. Whatever you feed it will multiply. 

If you consistently think of opportunities, it will become easy to spot them.
