How do you deal with prospects that don’t show up for meetings or demos? Or customers that ghost you in the sale?

Have you ever considered that this behavior may be a projection of how we treat our own customers?

People who don't respect their own time are unlikely to respect other people's time. Our personal standards reveal themselves as appointments or follow ups that we have set with customers that are unlikely to be met by those customers, mostly because we are also not personally taking that follow up seriously.

This is why it's important to hold yourself to a higher standard here. Follow up around the appointments made and communicate with your customers beforehand. Stop missing your own appointments and value your time more.

By doing this, your close rate will go up. When you formalize appointments and build expectations around them, it will help minimize ghosted deals and ensure that customers actually show up for them.

Remember, if you have a problem in your business or with your customers, first look for the problem within yourself.

Solve the problem within yourself first, and then it will shortly be resolved within your business, too.

It’s really easy to just pick up and start running ads off of an ad platform.

What is difficult is knowing how to improve performance over time, manage campaigns properly, duplicate and tweak ads to ensure you have the best runs running, and to take sales feedback into consideration to optimize lead quality.

I know this better than anyone, for five years ago we were hiring and training digital marketers for car dealerships, with the belief that dealers would start managing their own campaigns and take their budget in-house.

What did we learn? That we could train dealers to create their own content and help with ideas for campaigns, but that it was extremely difficult to train on ad optimization and to make sure the costs kept going down.

This is why so many new agency’s fail in our industry, and so many of the agencies that maintain clients are focused on franchise stores and auto groups with big budgets and less consideration for what is working or not working. A lot of agencies can just coast by through sharing misleading metrics and having dealer clients that don’t check on the campaigns.

With used car dealerships, and especially subprime, it’s a different beast.

With less money in the bank and less room for error, checking lead costs and cost per sale and analyzing performance becomes fundamental to keeping the store alive. In many cases, these leads become the only lead source for a dealership.

And then eventually, you have clients that try to take campaigns in-house because they think that maybe it’s easy or maybe they can figure it out themselves.

Sure, you can run ads on your own. But when your lead cost is $20-$40 higher than having the right agency manage the campaigns, and the quality is lower, then you’re spending at least $1000-$2000 more for every 50 leads you generate.

Here I show an example of two ad clients accounts since we started. Both of these clients doubled their sales staff since starting with us.

In the third image, I show the history of an ad campaign that a client decided to run themselves. (Also worth noting these first two images are generating actual leads, whereas this third ad account is just doing message campaigns, which a less qualified lead type and at a higher cost here than our lead campaigns).

As you can see, costs go up and down every single month instead of consistently going down. On worse quality leads. While our lead costs consistently go down every month (other than a little bump in ad costs at the end of the year, which will happen every year in all of advertising land).

This is the difference when you have an agency where the team has personally sold vehicles off of those leads and know the process front-to-back. We know what works and what doesn’t work.

It goes without saying that this client that had been trying to figure out how the run the ad campaigns on their own, is still currently a client of ours now. 🙂
