Business in a Digital Age looks at how organizations structure and manage their business in a digital age to stay current, strategic, and profitable. The course begins by reviewing the history of business in Canada from the beginning of the fur trade in the seventeenth century to the emergence of the digital economy in the twenty-first century.

I took my toddler to a client meeting.
And still closed the deal.

This was back in 2015.

My nanny bailed that morning.

I sat in the kitchen, heart racing, debating whether to cancel.

Instead, I called a teammate and said,
“Can you meet me outside the building?
I just need 45 minutes.”

She watched my daughter in the lobby while I pitched upstairs.

We won the client. 

That day changed how I lead.
It taught me the difference between control and trust.

You don’t build credibility by doing it all yourself.

You build it by letting people show up for you.

Saying “I’m proud of you” to people at work is like saying "welcome to the family"

It sounds supportive, but in a career context it can feel patronizing.

Who are you to decide whether my achievement is pride-worthy?
Why should your pride matter more than my own?

And yes — this applies even if you’re the boss, or they report to you.

Here’s the problem:

When recognition at work always sounds like borrowed pride, people start chasing validation instead of building confidence.

They measure success by whether someone else notices, not whether they see growth in themselves.

What if we changed the script?

Instead of “I’m proud of you,” try:

→ “I saw the effort you put in.”
→ “The way you solved that problem really made an impact.”
→ “How do you feel about this success?”

That language shifts the focus.

It gives people ownership of their wins.
It helps them build pride in their own capability, not in someone else’s approval.

Because the best kind of pride is the kind you give yourself.
