I always feel cringe when I do outbound.

Any advice on how to overcome this?

Got this question from a founder. I spent the last two weeks interviewing our users (founders, SDRs, sales leaders, everyone). Wanted to find the actual blockers in their outbound. Thought I’d hear stuff about process, tools, reply rates, or whatever.

But many talked about their feelings.

→ This approach just feels too pushy
→ Prospects are telling me to get lost in a nasty way
→ I'm a respected expert - feels off to reach out myself

I can relate. 

The number of times I've opened LinkedIn and just stared at the screen, wanting to do anything but click "Send" on a cold DM. Too many.

One user I've interviewed is a cold caller, which is not usually our crowd. I asked, "Why are you even using Extrovert if your process isn't LinkedIn native?"

He said, "When I drop a comment before I call (and the person reacts), I feel way more confident about the call. Even if they don’t remember the comment, I don’t feel like a total stranger. It just flows. More natural.”

I love that.

It’s funny, because the usual advice I hear is to "just do more", "suck it up", "keep doing more outbound."

I get it. There’s truth there. But if outbound FEELS like shit, more often than not it IS shit.

So maybe we shouldn’t always ignore the cringe.

Maybe we should find ways to make cold outreach feel warmer. Not just for the buyer, but for ourselves?

How do you deal with the cringe? Share your tips so I can steal them.

The most underrated hack for outbound in 2025:

Do nothing for weeks :D

In other words, make your sequences longer.

I know, sales math always says "shorter, faster, more"

But that stuff is eating itself alive.

There are 3 "dials" in prospecting:

→ Sequence length (are you in their inbox for a month, or a year?)
→ Effort per lead (how much work for GTM team)
→ Throughput (new leads started per month)

Many teams optimize the first one.
“Get through your list faster. Move on to the next.”

But that’s the exact opposite of what’s actually working now.

If you start 100 leads per month,
and you only stay in touch for 30 days,
you’re only ever nurturing 100 people.

But if you stay in touch for 90 days,
and you keep your effort per lead low (with AI, automation, whatever)
you’re still starting 100 leads per month,
but now you’re nurturing 300 active people.

Same work, 3x the pipeline, and better conversions.

Why so?

Because our solution is never someone’s top priority (let's be honest with ourselves).

Prospects are always fighting off 49 other fires.

If we’re still there 3-6-9 months later, we're in the right place when they finally care. 

Just lasting longer without actually working harder.

David and 🧉Marc at automate rev.ops. have a reactivation sequence that is “infinite.” It just keeps going until the prospect gets 3-4 messages without a reply (it resets on reply).

This is the long game, and it's also the only game left. Just need to keep going longer, but without annoying the prospects or burning out.

How?

→ Double your sequence length. Instead of 30 days, try 60 or 90. Or more.
→ Add longer gaps. Our most underrated hack was increasing the delay  between connection acceptance and 1st DM.
→ Find ways to cut your effort per prospect in half. AI, automation, templates, etc (or Extrovert 😉).
→ Remove all annoying "just checking in" interactions.
→ Think beyond DMs, calls, or emails. Content is an interaction; comment is an interaction.

That’s it.

Are your sequences longer than 1 month?

We onboard about 200 users a month, and I try to talk as many founders as I can about their GTM. Noticed there's one thing the best performing teams have in common:

They precisely know the difference between attention and trust.

Attention is instant.
Trust is slow.

Last week, I was onboarding a new customer and asked him, "How long did it take you to buy the last tool you bought?"

He said: "I dunno. I think I first saw them post something 6 months ago. Kept seeing them pop up, started to recognize them. Trialed 2 months ago. Then other priorities took over. Finally bought last week.”

That’s normal.

But then I asked him: "How long do you give your prospects, from first cold message to 'not interested' in your CRM?"

He said: "Three weeks, usually."

So, that’s the mismatch. We buy slow, but we try to sell fast. 🤷‍♂️

But why is that?

The most common objection I hear is: "Playing the long game takes too much effort."
→ But that’s not true if you keep your effort-per-prospect low.

Another common misconception: "The long game is not a sales job, it's marketing."
→ Also not true in my opinion. Marketing builds broad awareness. Sales builds relationships with specific people.

Another one: "You need to build a personal brand to play the long game."
→ Personal branding is great, love it. But it’s not for everyone, and it’s not required. You can play the long game 1-to-1 if you build the right system.

For me, the solution is:
👉 Optimizing for low effort‑per‑prospect over a long period

Keep your effort per prospect crazy low. But stay visible in their world for months. Automate the grunt work. Keep a human in the loop for safety and authenticity.

Build the system, so you don’t have to be a hero.

P.S. How long did it take you to buy the last tool or service you remember?

I recently asked 30+ founders, "What GTM motion gives you the best results?". They gave different answers, but there was one common, weird thing:

The channel that brings in 80% of their results is NOT the channel they put most effort into.

Most founders spend their time on outbound: 
→ Cold emails
→ Cold LinkedIn
→ Cold calls

But when I asked what actually brings them deals, it was always: 
→ Word of mouth
→ Organic traffic
→ Personal brand
→ Referrals

So I asked the obvious follow-up: 
“Why invest 80% of effort in channels that bring 20% of results?”

The answer was always the same:

“Because I can control it.”

With outbound, you can send 1000 emails and track exactly what happens. You can measure reply rates and have full control over the inputs, and can see the outputs. 

With organic channels like word of mouth or content, you can’t control when someone recommends you. You can't really track people who see your content. 

So founders default to what they can control and measure, even when it doesn’t work as well (because buyers are just overwhelmed with transactional sales).

But WHAT IF we could actually make organic controllable? 

Not measurable in the traditional sense, but controllable.

What if you could systematically build visibility, relationships, and trust in a way that feels authentic to your buyers but is actually repeatable for you?

My prediction: 

That’s where the edge will be in the next 1-3 years. 

Things like building your personal brand consistently. Engaging with your audience. Creating relationships before asking for anything. Showing up where your buyers are.

That’s it.

I ran a Clay table of 30,000+ US founders who actively post on LinkedIn. Then, I checked how many of them left just 10 comments on other people’s posts in the last 10 days. Not a high bar, right? Basically, one comment a day.

Turns out… just 5.6% are doing that.

Even crazier: when I dug into the comments, a huge chunk were just:
→ “PLAYBOOK”
→ “Congrats on your new role”
→ Or just some obvious AI-generated shit

Less than 2% were actually:
→ Adding an opinion
→ Showing expertise
→ Commenting outside their own buddy circle

I’ll be honest, this shocked me.
Because when I talk to founders, they’re always telling me:

Outbound is getting harder by the week. 

Edge is hard to get and maintain, and it gets averaged out quickly. There’s always some new tech that gives you a leg up, then the crowd piles in, and it stops working. Cold DMs and cold emails are getting fewer replies. Posting content is great for awareness, but for most founders, it's hard to get outside their current bubble.

Commenting is one of the last untapped channels to be constantly seen OUTSIDE your network.

→ When you reply to your customers’ or prospects’ posts, they see your face. And if they interact with your comment, the odds they’ll see your next post go way up.
→ When you comment on industry leaders, you get discovered by their audience. Their people are your people.
→ When you comment on LinkedIn buddies' posts, they’ll return the favor, and you all grow together.

Why do few people do it? 

My take:
→ It requires doing something every day for weeks
→ It’s mostly not fun
→ It’s hard to measure the impact directly

Yet that’s EXACTLY why it works.

People tend to do things that are easy to scale, automate, or measure.

GOOD commenting is still mostly unscalable and a pain in the ass.

But that’s where the arbitrage is right now.

Ever heard of banner blindness? I think we’re about to see cold pitch blindness. My brain literally can’t see them anymore. And relevance won't help here...

Last week, I was talking to a friend, saying, “I don’t think I get cold-pitched on LinkedIn anymore. Feels like people just stopped doing it.” 

He looked at me like I was insane. He said he gets 10-15 pitches a day. Every day.

I checked my inbox and, yeah... I get about 10 too. My brain doesn’t even register them. I swipe through them like ads. Unconsciously.

There’s an old concept in web design: "Banner blindness". 

People just don’t see the ads on websites. Even if the ad is relevant, you don’t even notice it.

And I think we’re getting there with cold outreach.

It doesn’t matter if the DM is relevant.

Or if it’s personal. Or clever.

My brain just can’t see it.

I don’t even process it as a message from another human being. 

"More relevant" won't help here. "More targeted" won't help either.

So what now? What do we even do about this?

I think the only solution is to play the long game. To step outside the “cold outreach” box completely. So your message never gets processed as a pitch.

Instead, it gets seen as a person-thing, not a banner-thing.

Ask: how can I get out of the “cold DM” box entirely?

More than 2,000 people have used Extrovert since we launched. I’ve spoken to most of them. If I could fix ONE misconception in outbound, it would be this:

The shorter the sequence = The more effective the outreach is
(move on fast)

Many teams make their sequences shorter. They want to cut steps, speed things up, and get to the “ask” right away.

BUT

Short sequences = rushed prospects = poor conversions

People need time to warm up, notice you exist, see you show up more than once, and build up some familiarity.

And most importantly, your leads need to hit their buying window (which you can’t control).

So when you cut your sequence short and move people out of your funnel "just to keep things efficient", you’re basically yanking them off the conveyor belt before they’re ready to buy.

There’s a better way:

👉 Lower the EFFORT you spend on each touch.

This way, you can actually nurture more people and keep going for longer.

You’re making your process more efficient, but not by rushing it.

You’re just getting better at staying top of mind, with less effort each time.

A longer nurture window means you’ll be there when the timing is finally right.

The math is simple:

A 30-day sequence with high-effort, high-anxiety touches will burn you out.

A 180-day sequence where you lightly pop in here and there CAN be easier to maintain AND work better.

🔑 TAKEAWAY: 

Ridiculously long sequences with low effort per prospect are my biggest bet for outbound going further. AI-assisted tools are perfect for this.
