🌄 Took my oldest son to Rock City and (because I'm way too online and marketing-pilled) had a realization that the farmers who allowed their barns to be painted as roadside advertisements were our first influencers.

🌍 We've come a long way from these salt of the earthers to salt bae'ing Tik Tokers, but the spirit is still the same....

💫 If you aren't familiar with Rock City (then you likely aren't from the American South or Lower Midwest), it's a quaint family-friendly attraction atop Lookout Mountain just outside Chattanooga, Tennessee. (My son was very disappointed to discover that it's not an actual city made from rocks.) 

🎨 Founded in the 1930s by Garnet Carter whose estate contained a collection of sizeable boulders and a view where you can (on a clear day) literally see seven states, they needed help making Rock City the regional attraction it needed to be in order to succeed financially.

"To spread the word about Rock City, Carter hired Clark Byers, a sign painter who worked for a local advertising agency. Instead of constructing billboards, Rock City followed in the footsteps of Mail Pouch, a West Virginia tobacco company, which painted advertisements on existing barns. Byers was tasked with convincing farmers on rural backcountry roads to let him redecorate. Those who offered up their rooftops were compensated with free entry into Rock City, promotional items, or sometimes a rental fee of $3 to $5 a year."

Either way, the strategy worked. At its peak, Rock City had advertisements on over 900 painted barns from Michigan to Texas. While that number has dwindled to just a few dozen today - marketing, farming, and barn building trends have changed significantly over the last 90 years - Rock City, as evidenced on my trip yesterday, is still thriving...
