Why? Possibly my favorite question as a child. Besides my affinity for grapes and passion for legos, I would always beg to know the reason or story behind the provided answer. This thirst for reason fueled my curiosity in two fields: technology and public speaking. As a debater in high school, I was mesmerized by speakers who were able to convince judges of their arguments even when they were in contrast to the judge’s intrinsic beliefs. I developed my speaking skills to communicate my thoughts more effectively while still being respectful of others’ opinions. In university, I used my voice to motivate elementary students in underprivileged school districts to pursue careers in STEM by working with them on science projects – the intention was to convey complex natural phenomenon in a more intuitive way. I was also an outspoken advocate of mental and physical health services available to the city of Austin’s homeless population. As part of a student run volunteer clinic, we raised awareness of free resources available to them and offered a preliminary assessment of their vitals. Meanwhile, my passion for learning and understanding how things work drove me to a degree in engineering. I believe there is a curiosity within us that bellows to be let out when you see a new gadget or piece of tech. It’s maddening to not know its capabilities and functions. Unfortunately, engineering taught me that there is an insurmountable amount of information in even one field for one person to traverse. My good fortune, grants me a job that allows me to wake up every morning knowing I’ll come home knowing at least a dozen new concepts. As a young professional, I always ask why are we pursuing an assignment and what value are we providing in the long term. I hope to learn more about people and what drives them in conjunction with technology and the breakthroughs being made every day behind the scenes. I am confident my passion in these areas will drive me to explore possibilities that will create value going forward.
