Novo Nordisk and smartpatient just launched a digital support program for obesity care in Germany. At first glance, it looks like another “patient app.” But the bigger story is this: pharma is moving beyond the pill (or injection) to own more of the patient journey.

Through smartpatient’s MyTherapy platform, the partnership integrates treatment support, lifestyle coaching, gamification, and education into a single digital pathway. 

The goal isn’t just weight loss, it’s long-term activation and adherence. Real-world data from patients flows back into the program to continuously refine care.

Claudia Laven, VP of Novo Nordisk’s Obesity Business Unit in Germany, put it clearly:
 “Our ambition is to make effective weight management sustainable over the long term. By embedding support along the entire care journey, this collaboration unlocks healthier lives and lasting results for people living with obesity.”

Strategically, this matters. GLP-1s are already blockbuster therapies, but distribution and sustained use are the next battleground.

#06 Indian healthtech is entering a new chapter!!

VCs are shifting their focus from broad digital platforms to deep-tech startups in AI, diagnostics, devices, and advanced therapies.

Examples making waves:
	•	Qure.ai.ai – AI for radiology scans (TB, lung cancer, stroke) → $65M raised.
	•	Innovaccer – Data analytics powering hospitals & insurers → $275M raised.
	•	Neuberg Diagnostics Diagnostics – Building a global diagnostics network → $109M raised.

Why are VCs excited about early-stage deep-tech healthcare?

1. IP & defensibility – Unlike crowded telemedicine or pharmacy models, strong science + patents create real moats.

2. Global potential – A validated product in India can scale to regulated markets worldwide.

3. Exit opportunities – Big pharma & medtech giants are hungry for innovation, making acquisitions attractive.

4. Impact + returns – It’s high-risk and long-cycle, but the rewards (financial and societal) are disproportionately high.

Yes, regulatory hurdles and insurance gaps remain. But the thesis is clear: instead of “grow fast, sell cheap,” the bet is on “solve deep, scale global.”

To me, that’s the most exciting kind of healthcare innovation to watch!

#05 𝐀𝐈 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞: 𝐀 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤

LLMs have already impressed the world by passing medical exams and drafting clinical notes. But in medicine, saying things is not enough. 

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬: 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐈 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬?

A Stanford University team just published MedAgentBench in NEJM AI, the first benchmark to test how well AI agents can actually perform tasks in electronic health records: retrieving labs, ordering tests, prescribing meds. In other words, the everyday “housekeeping” of clinical care.

Early results show progress Claude 3.5 Sonnet v2 reached ~70% success, while most others lagged far behind. Many models struggled with nuanced reasoning, complex workflows, and interoperability challenges that clinicians face daily.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫?
Because the tech world’s “move fast and break things” doesn’t work in healthcare. Accuracy, reproducibility, and error awareness aren’t optional, they’re the foundation for trust. 

Benchmarks like MedAgentBench set the standards that developers, hospitals, and regulators can align on.

As co-author Kameron Black put it: “AI won’t replace doctors anytime soon. It’s more likely to augment our clinical workforce.”

In just a couple of years, “foundation models” have gone from obscure academic term to medtech’s favorite talking point.

 – GE HealthCare has an MRI model
 – Philips is working with NVIDIA
 – Aidoc is pitching triage tools
 – The FDA is even exploring how to tag devices built on them

But what are they really?

 – Large AI systems trained on massive, mostly unlabeled datasets.
 – Able to combine scans, notes, histories, even genomics.
 – Flexible enough to adapt to new diseases or tasks with minimal retraining.

The promise sounds big:
 – Detecting rare conditions that most models miss
 – Building new AI tools in weeks instead of months
 – Freeing up radiologists’ time amid a nationwide shortage

But the reality is messier:
 – Out-of-the-box, many models underperform narrow AI
 – FDA clearances still cover narrow, specific tasks
 – Hospitals struggle to evaluate them beyond small test sets
 – Proof of patient benefit is still thin

So here’s the open question:
Are foundation models medicine’s next real leap or just the latest trend waiting for evidence?

 Sleep apnea is massively underdiagnosed, with more than 1 billion people affected globally. Apple Watch now uses a “Breathing Disturbances” metric to spot patterns linked to moderate-to-severe sleep apnea. Every 30 days, users get notified if their data shows consistent signs, backed by one of the largest validation studies ever conducted in this area

2. Hearing Health (AirPods Pro 2)
 AirPods Pro 2 are no longer just for music—they’re stepping into clinical territory:
 – Real-time Hearing Protection to reduce noise exposure.
 – A 5-minute, clinical-grade at-home Hearing Test.
 – An FDA-pending software-based Hearing Aid feature.
 This makes hearing support more accessible and affordable than ever

3. Blood Pressure Insights (Apple Watch)
 Hypertension affects over a billion people globally and often goes unnoticed until complications set in. Apple Watch is now building tools to help users identify early signs of high blood pressure by analyzing trends and irregularities not just one-off measurements.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞?
Apple is gradually reframing its devices from wellness trackers into health companions for chronic, high-impact conditions. With FDA clearance pending, these features could shift how everyday people detect and manage health risks.

#03 When AI becomes part of the care team

What happens when a patient builds their own AI-powered medical team?

Steve Brown , CEO of CureWise, did just that after a missed diagnosis. Doctors initially overlooked signs of cancer. But when he fed his full medical history, labs, and imaging into an AI agent he built, the system flagged patterns that pointed directly to blood cancer.

He didn’t stop there. He created a panel of AI “specialists” or a virtual tumo board - oncologist, gastroenterologist, hematologist — and a synthesis agent he called Hippocrates. Together, they surfaced insights his care team had missed, suggested tests like bone marrow biopsy, and helped map out a personalized treatment strategy.

The result: instead of standard protocols, he pursued an off-label but targeted therapy. His markers normalized. His response was remarkable.

AI didn’t replace his doctors, it supercharged his decision-making. It gave him the ability to see options, connect global research, and walk into consultations as an informed partner.

The question is:
If patients can use AI this way, how should clinicians, hospitals, and payers respond? Will AI become a true bridge between overwhelmed systems and personalized care or create a new layer of complexity?
