Purpose is essential. After 35 years in this industry, I can’t be more convinced of the central, strategic dimension of purpose, or “raison d’être”, as we say in French: what do you truly stand for, in your business and with regards to the society and the world around? Identifying your purpose, understanding it in depth, living up to it and being 100% true to it in whatever you do, that should be your North Star. In fact, I consider myself a purpose-hunter. This sort of quest for the grail I was mentioning earlier is what I deal with, in my practice as an independent semiotician today: most of the top execs of centenary-old firms and brands are highly skilled and talented folks, but very few of them have a clear vision of what the founding purpose of the organization they’re managing is about: “Can you help us uncover the original purpose of the company/brand, what it meant then, and what it means for today and for tomorrow?” is what they would ask me.
