At Appy, we work with non technical Founders to build successful tech business. Involved from idea to prototyping, building and launching MVP, fundraising and scaling. 

We work with:

- Scaleup with traction and investment, wanting to grow to Series A
- Businesses wanting to get ROI from tech

We choose to work with motivated individuals who can invest time and money to start leveraging the opportunity technology presents, people who are prepared to be challenged on their assumptions, with the view to maximise results in the shortest space of time.

I get involved as Tech Partner (like an Agency but much better), Non Exec, Advisor and sometimes investor. Our approach is holistic - looking at your whole business and what's needed to win - not just technology.

My "first career" was leading some of Europe's largest Private Equity financings for 10 years, until the financial crisis (and children) made me realise I needed to run my own business.

This is a hat tip to people building businesses in public - here's behind the scenes on SenLife. Over the past few months, we've continued to make meaningful strides across our mission, partnerships, and product development:

IMPACT

- We’re proud to have received lots positive feedback from parents and carers about how SenLife has improved family and school life, enabling support.

- Our user base has now grown to over 1,000 monthly active families, with many heart-warming stories highlighting the difference we’re making.

- Our community presence continues to grow: 12,500 followers on Instagram and 5–10k views per post on LinkedIn, driving awareness and engagement.

PARTNERSHIPS

- We’ve been privileged to engage in conversations with national leaders including Sir Ed Davey (Liberal Democrat Leader and strong advocate for Carers Reform), Sir Robert Buckland (former Lord Chancellor and government autism champion), and Jonathan Townsend (CEO, The King’s Trust), among others.

- We are advancing collaborations with Bath University’s Centre for Applied Autism Research and the Institute of Augmented Human, bringing academic rigour and rich data science into our platform.

- Pilot program conversations with clinical partners, supporting their diagnostic processes and validating the strength of SenLife’s structured evidence approach.

- We’ve also begun partnerships with Deloitte and HelloFresh, where SenLife is now recommended to their employees - with more corporate partnerships in discussion.

PRODUCT

- Our core app continues to evolve, and we have now made the core version free - enabling greater reach and alignment with schools, charities, and NHS pathways.

- This move supports our growing role in SEN planning for schools and positions us for inclusion in GP social prescribing programmes (SenLife now added to the JOY app).

- We’re also developing higher-value features that expand our unique dataset, including WhatsApp-based data capture, Pre-Assessments, Parent-Led Coaching, and Physiological & Environmental tracking.

FUTURE

We’re now entering a pivotal stage - scaling our impact, deepening partnerships, and preparing for broader adoption across healthcare, education, and workplace wellbeing.

Building Tech Businesses

When my wife and I setup SenLife, our aim was to help parents struggling with numerous challenges that stem from having a child with autism or ADHD in a world where understanding and support can be sadly lacking.

This was inspired by our profoundly autistic nephew Tristan and his family.

It’s not about creating a Unicorn business, though we can see a path to a valuable business through a unique data set.

The number of families struggling day to day with neurodivergence is growing globally, the support is nowhere near enough, and the pain is severe as we've seen first hand.

I’m so proud to say that we're having a life changing impact for families now so we've decided to make the core product Free to help as many families as possible.

Maybe that's not the right strategy to achieve large valuation and investment from some types of investors, but the value of the social impact is 100% worth it.

We're proud to be in conversations with people like the Kings Trust, Sir Ed Davey, Sir Robert Auckland, the NHS, Bath University, numerous great schools and charities.

It might be economy, tech or time of the year related but this month we’ve seen a trend of delays.

Delays in signing off projects and delays in launching projects.

Reasons are varied and usually unexpected surprises coming out of nowhere: investment delay (when it was all but signed), business as usual taking precedence (like global outage of Azure) or even US government shut down (meaning a filing not completed)!

Having resilience in the business, some runway in the bank and realistic timings/weighting on your pipeline are key.

Can you guess the problem in raising investment for a ”social impact B2C business” like SenLife?

Apparently, there are 2 clues in the sentence above:

B2C - people prefer B2B and ideally SaaS. B2C is seen as expensive to get traction and lower chance of success

Social impact - doing good is lovely but are you focused enough on making money for investors?

One conversation I had was very positive but as we might not reach a minimum of £500m valuation in 5 years, it was not of interest… I can play with the financial model but it would not feel congruent!

That’s the structural challenge of some investor types - they need that kind of outcome to be able to return their fund and since they can only invest in a few opportunities… and if you’re too early in your journey that’s too much risk.

I believe that by focusing on a never seen before set of data (behavioural, physiological and environmental - with a focus on neurodivergence), we are creating a business that has both social impact but also exciting commercial upside.

Our aim is to be old fashioned and generate revenue/profit to be able to keep innovating without raising more capital (after this round of course!).

We're having great conversations with investors who get the mission and we’ve decided to focus on right investor fit with long term thinking vs just any investors.
