🇻🇪 Venezuela’s alleged Bitcoin holdings raise significant questions regarding custody and control. Reports suggest that the government may have secretly amassed up to $60 billion in Bitcoin, potentially making it one of the world’s largest holdings. This accumulation may have occurred through the conversion of gold, oil revenues, and other assets into cryptocurrency to evade sanctions.

These funds are said to have been moved through intermediaries in Turkey and the UAE, subsequently secured in cold wallets utilizing mixers for anonymity. A critical mystery remains: Who truly controls the private keys? Investigative reports indicate that the keys are held by a small circle of trusted operatives, with Alex Saab — a key figure in Maduro’s shadow financial network — at the center.

Some accounts suggest a multi-signature setup designed by Swiss lawyers, distributing control across individuals in various jurisdictions to mitigate the risk of single-point failure or seizure. With Nicolás Maduro now in U.S. custody following recent military action, pressing questions arise: Will Saab or other key holders cooperate with authorities, or will they vanish with access to this fortune? 

Moreover, can the U.S. or any new Venezuelan government ever recover these assets, or are they effectively lost forever on the blockchain, akin to dormant whale wallets? If these holdings are real, they dwarf publicly tracked governmental holdings, with only approximately 240 #BTC officially attributed to #Venezuela, and could rival corporate giants like #MicroStrategy.

One of my enduring passions is 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 — frontier and underserved markets rich in strategic resources, yet historically disconnected from global capital.⁣
