Vision Elevators (Pty) Ltd

Vision Elevators is one of the largest privately owned elevator installation and servicing companies in South Africa. Leading a team of seven administrative and finance staff, my role encompasses the end-to-end finance function for Vision and its sister company (manufacturing). Using the SAP Business One, Qlik, and SimplePay platforms, I am accountable to deliver in the following areas (with selected achievements noted below):

- Project-based and monthly revenue cycle, including billings, cash collections, revenue recognition and project management support. Helping to collect arrear debts from two large government clients (10% and 25% of total outstanding, respectively) via external relationship-building with key stakeholders and weekly internal measurement. Responsible for Accounts Receivable maintenance and optimisation.

- Expenditure cycle: valid, accurate and complete recording of expenses, as well as timely payments to suppliers. Established clear payments process with procurement and operations to optimise time while maintaining our payment obligations.

- Forex: ordering of forex and payment preparation in line with local forex regulations.

- Payroll: payment of all staff accurately and on time, all relevant payroll-tax submissions. Trained new, junior team member to process payroll from start to end in two months.

- Net working capital management: day-to-day funds management to ensure sufficient cash on hand while maximising returns on investment.

- Management reporting monthly presenting two sets of Profit and Loss Statements, Balance Sheets, Ratio and Budget Analyses, as well as Debtor and Supplier Age Analyses with related commentary and recommendations.

- Annual audit preparation for both companies.

- Full taxation responsibility: calculation, filings, and payment or collection of funds.

- Full cash flow cycle management responsibility: able to report on and recommend short and long-term actions.

Financial Manager

Eventerprise is headquartered in Switzerland with an office in Cape Town. As the Head / VP Finance and Operations, I had the privilege of leading a diverse mix of between three and eight people at any given time while being exposed to Eventerprise's digitally borne startup environment from day 1. This allowed me to immerse myself in the following areas:
- Subscription finance: calculation and projection of relevant financial measurements such as ARR, CAC, and LTV. This enabled me to support the then late seed financing round which resulted in US$275k of additional funding.
- Expenditure management: via a team audit of expense subscriptions and other costs, reduced the monthly cash burn rate by 20%.
- Infrastructure: managed the move out of permanent office space by negotiating the early exit from an office lease without incurring lease penalties and related arrangements in alignment to a flexible, remote working model.
- Worked across timezones (India, SA, Germany, Switzerland, US) to help coordinate on development, finance, and legal matters.
- Responsible for the accurate and timely governmental submissions in US and SA.
- Trained between five and 10 short-term foreign interns to support various finance and operational matters as part of the team, resulting in at least one intern being retained as part of the ongoing team.

After 11 years as a qualified CA, I took some time to work as a consultant for a while. This put me in touch with small to medium sized businesses who needed certain financial and taxation skills without the capital or desire to recruit for a full-time financial manager or accountant.

I was fortunate to attract a few clients early via my network which allowed me to do the following:
- Grew the business from zero to annual billings of NZ$50k / ZAR600kin two years.
- Achieve a refund of value added tax for a social property developer.
- Help to register a trust for income tax and legally avoid multiple years of tax submissions and related penalties.
- Support due diligence financial analyses for two businesses: one allowed the settlement of a valuation and the other resulted in the buyer exiting the process.
- Responsible for the accurate and timely submission of governmental submissions.

My first introduction to a more entrepreneurial business, Nebula provided me (as the chief financial officer) with the opportunity to lead five finance, human resource and office administration staff. Nebula is a consulting and business-process outsourcing company in the telecommunications space counting a number of larger corporates as its clients. My responsibilities included:

- End-to-end financial management including maintaining the cash flow cycle: instituted a daily cash flow forecast to ensure that we kept abreast of intramonth cash flow issues.

- Compilation of annual budgets and quarterly forecasts for management and board purposes. This enabled saving of approximately 10% on payroll costs.

- Annual audit preparation: achieved consecutive clean audit opinions.

- Supported legal and labour law compliance through maintaining contracts as well as successfully managing any matters that arose.

As the Financial Manager, then CFO, the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA) was my first commercial employer after qualifying as a chartered accountant. I led five finance and human resource staff during my tenure. SSISA’s business revolves around wellness as expressed in medical, high-performance, gymnasium, and outreach. I was responsible for:

- End-to-end financial management including maintaining and reporting on diverse revenue streams while ensuring suppliers were paid correctly.

- Compilation of annual budgets and quarterly forecasts for management and board purposes. This enabled saving in certain departments of approximately 25% on overall costs.

- Annual audit preparation: achieved consecutive clean audit opinions.

- Responsible for accurate and timely payment of salaries and other variable remuneration for a diverse workforce.

- Implemented internal controls to ensure accurate processing of gym sales contracts from initiation to financial reporting
