Senior Engineering Manager

Joined a small org of 8 people and grew it past 20 backend, frontend and systems engineers. Member of senior management, cooperating with C-Levels and VPs to develop software for all areas of the business. Mentoring engineers and providing technical guidance. We build our microservices and user-facing apps mainly in typescript, deployed with kubernetes in GCP. We interoperate with our data & ML stacks, which are mostly python and C++, via http APIs and a message broker.

Responsibilities include:
- Coordinating with Product, Design, AI, Sales and Operations in developing Lengoo’s business from a technical perspective
- Hiring and developing engineers through feedback, mentorship and training. Setting OKRs and performing regular 360 reviews.
- Negotiating and managing the budget for Engineering including compensation, equipment, software and all other costs.
- Supporting 3 development teams through EMs and Leads, and lead our cloud infrastructure team.

Key achievements so far:
- Grew Engineering from 8 to over 20 people including frontend, backend, systems and staff engineers.
- Mentored several team members through to promotion to Senior and Engineering Manager levels.
- Direct revenue impact by designing and implementing an API-based strategy for 3rd party interoperability, in cooperation with our Sales partners. Time to develop integrations fell from months to weeks, and can be offloaded to external partners.
- Improved our ability to solve problems by introducing modern observability solutions into our microservices stack and Istio service mesh.
- Introduced Agile practices and fostering direct customer-developer interactions, to make it easier to develop high quality software.
- Increased the quality and stability of key services by replacing them with best-of-breed solutions such as Okta and Plunet, while freeing up resources to develop our core business.

Providing technical leadership, guidance and organisational coaching to the software teams of 30+ customers, from small startups to large Fortune 500 enterprises across Europe, US and Canada.

Responsibilities included:
- Guiding customer teams on architectural choices and implementation details of software using Contentful’s APIs, regardless of tech stack.
- Facilitating cross-team coordination for customers
- Helping AEs close deals through technical validation and enablement of prospects.
- Helping CSMs retain customers through technical and architectural problem solving.
- Helping AEs and CSMs expand deals by finding new opportunities for Contentful to deliver value to existing customers.
- Synthesizing customer insights and sharing them effectively with the Product and Engineering orgs internally, to inform market-relevant product development.

With a growing Engineering department and my consistent contributions across the teams, I accepted a promotion to head of engineering for the newly created Platform department.

Responsibilities
- Manage 15 people across 3 teams
- Manage through Team Leads, mentoring them closely
- Develop our public APIs to keep pace with the business’ growing sophistication
- Develop our cloud infrastructure to support new markets and new products, keeping high availability in the face of growing scale
- Develop our payments solutions, integrating with multiple providers across different geographies, keeping the business running regardless of payment implementation details, and providing visibility into all-important revenue data.

Head of Platform Engineering

Led the design and implementation of the main public API, powering web and mobile experiences for hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide. Deeply involved in the hiring process, interviewing and evaluating candidates while actively contributing to improving the process itself.

Achievements
- Designed, developed and delivered a public API to power all customer touchpoints, including orders for millions of boxes a month.
- Mentored engineers in the API team on TDD and robust software design, leading to a solid codebase that we could iterate on quickly after launch.
- Evangelised on solid, maintainable software development practices through frequent in-company tech talks and demos.
- Delivered a docker-based solution for local development, speeding up onboarding on new hires.
- Launched cloud infrastructure automation efforts using Ansible that would culminate in the full automation of Hellofresh’s AWS cloud infra.
- Provided architectural guidance for key projects in areas such as customer portal, customer loyalty, supply chain management, and the company’s main event bus.
- Helped hire dozens of software engineers across all teams.
- Introduced collaboration components to the hiring process, leading to routinely positive feedback from candidates both hired and rejected, as well as securing talent that communicates well on top of being great programmers.

Senior Software Engineer

I was contracted to develop the backend for a corporate intranet application which handled multi-currency expense reporting and workflow automation. I joined a team with Angular frontend engineers and supplied the RESTful API as well as all backend services including web server, database and job scheduling. I once again used the Symfony php/mysql stack to deliver a tested and robust product.

Inpakt

Inpakt was a startup building a social network for people wanting to volunteer with nonprofit organizations, as well as a payments processor for such NPOs.

I was attracted to its socially responsible mission and became one of the first engineers on the team. We delivered MVPs built on symfony/php and mysql in a quick iterative fashion, as the company sought to find its product/market fit.

Our three-strong engineering team demonstrated how velocity can increase when adhering to professional engineering practices such as solid principles and TDD, as a healthy codebase was easy to mold and pivot as the business needed.

Sadly, the national market for donations offered little in the way of business viability. We were unable to penetrate foreign markets and the venture folded after less than a year.

Founding Engineer

Contracting on behalf of PrimeIT, I joined teams working on large scale e-commerce and adtech products.

Sapo Voucher was a groupon-like service built on a heavily customized code igniter php+mysql platform, to which I introduced symfony components and increased testing coverage for better productivity and resilience, while keeping performance high.

Sapo Ads is a contextual text advertising service running on highly optimized php and bare-metal mysql instances. I helped deliver better campaign management capabilities.

Both products were available throughout the entire Portuguese-speaking community, meaning we were delivering high scale traffic efficiently to millions of users across Portugal, Brazil, North America and Africa.

Seeking to focus on full time software engineering on my own terms, I was engaged by a client in the automotive industry to develop a multilingual car rental platform. I once again used mysql, php and symfony for the job, deepening my knowledge of the framework while delivering a highly customizable system for stock management, booking system and marketing content management.

Managers often forget to give people notice about big changes. It pisses them off.

No one likes to be told last minute to throw out all their work and start again on something else, and certainly no one likes to have their team changed / merged / resized without any notice.

Top-down, authoritarian organisations make these mistakes all the time and then wonder where all their good talent went.
