Media Arts Coordinator and Instructor

• Develop a dynamic and comprehensive curriculum for beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of all moviemaking and animation courses at EHS.
• Teach principles of animation, animation techniques, cinematography, screenwriting, narrative strategies, sound design, visual effects and compositing, directing, and project management.
• Create software tutorials and camera gear demonstration videos to differentiate instruction. 
• Design, implement, and assess student-led, project-based lessons that engage and challenge students
• Initiate avenues to celebrate the work and achievements of student in the program both inside and outside the community of the school.
• Organize, coordinate, and oversee school field trips that further enrich course curriculums (highlights include trips to Japan, film festivals, and multiple Arts Festivals)
• Design and teach curriculums for multiple 2-week elective Interim Term courses including "Salsa, Bachata and Chacha", "Cryptozoology and Ufology Mockumentary", "Japanese Culture", and "Making the GarageBand"
• Design, develop, and iteratively improve instruction for hybrid classrooms (in-person, remote, and virtual students) during COVID protocols, with both synchronous and asynchronous lesson planning.

The question I get asked most often on how I make visuals: 

"What software do you use?"

The problem is software enables thinking, but without the thinking, a piece of software is just an empty shell.

So the more important question is:
How do you translate an idea into a visual metaphor?

For me, it’s a 3-step process:

⦿ STEP 1: Clarify the message
Everything is downstream of clarity. Without it, no amount of graphics will resonate with the audience.

⦿ STEP 2: Simplify the meaning
You need to give your message a recognizable shape so your audience can process it fast and easily.

⦿ STEP 3: Amplify the insight
This step is critical. Most visual thinkers believe you have to blatantly hammer your reader over the head with the message. But this makes the reader passive.

Trust the reader. It’s not about you looking smart. It’s about making your reader feel smart. Leave space in the message for the audience to fill in the gap themselves.

We’re just touching the surface here, but this is the general overview of the process: 

Clarify => Simplify => Amplify

If you get these 3 steps right, you'll be well on your way to making a memorable visual packed with insights for your reader. 

*For the record, the software I use is Procreate on the iPad with an Apple Pencil. 😊
