When I was growing up, my mum was always worried I would be unemployable. How did I manage to get my first big-boy job? I didn't have to interview for it! (I still don't know what a Director of Product does..) 

I used to secretly edit my UX designers' prototypes on Figma.. until my Figma access was revoked. I then tried to re-write the app using GraphQL and NextJS, and that's when the engineering team locked me out of GitHub too. I now mostly spend my days posting long messages to my team in Slack, which no one reads..

Most people still underestimate the sheer scale of solar’s cost curve. It’s increasingly clear that solar will beat every other source in the energy transition.

But solar's success creates a second-order problem.. intermittency and unstable grids.

This is where energy storage comes in - moving energy through time so grids can absorb more renewables. Today, energy storage remains too expensive, too complex to operate, and too difficult to monetize.

So we chose to fully vertically integrate and simplify the value for customers - hardware, software and market access. We got regulatory electricity licenses so we can operate and aggregate distributed assets directly.

As energy outsiders, plenty of people thought we were crazy. But one of the first to believe this vision was Tiang Lim Foo from Forge Ventures - back when all we had was a scrappy prototype built in a proverbial garage.

Since then, so many have taken a chance on us - our institutional and angel investors, partners, customers and regulators. I'm grateful for all of you. 

But most of all, I'm grateful to my brilliant, kind, and relentless team - Matthew Wong, Haojin Yang, Reshma Prabhu, and Bryan Leong - who show up everyday to turn this audacious vision into reality. You are the reason I wake up every morning motivated and inspired by what we are building together.

We have so much to accomplish in the months ahead. If we succeed, it means fewer fossil fuels burned, and cleaner air across Southeast Asia.

🐳 Thrilled to share that Blue Whale Energy has been awarded a regulatory sandbox by Energy Market Authority (EMA) to pilot Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) in Singapore, alongside fellow awardees SP Group and Nanyang Technological University Singapore.

Over the next two years, we'll test how VPPs can provide energy and ancillary services to strengthen Singapore's grid.

This matters because as Singapore brings more renewables and intermittent sources online, our grid needs new tools to stay stable and resilient.

VPPs are *software-defined* power plants. Managing fleets of distributed energy resources is a massive software and systems challenge - and it’s a privilege to bring my experience building AI and software companies to help tackle one of the defining challenges of our time: the energy transition.

Over the past few months, we’ve engaged closely with our regulators leading up to this sandbox. I’ve been genuinely impressed by their competence, rigour, and care. It’s been a reminder of what makes Singapore special - and we’re grateful for the opportunity to play our part. 🇸🇬

A stable and reliable grid system is vital to Singapore’s energy future. 

To prepare for a more dynamic power system, we have launched a pilot of the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Regulatory Sandbox with SP Group, Blue Whale Energy, and Nanyang Technological University Singapore - a step forward in strengthening our grid capabilities and supporting Singapore’s energy transition.

The sandbox is part of our efforts under the Future Grid Capabilities Roadmap to ensure reliability of our power grid through research and development, pilot projects and deployment of solutions.
