I'm the Founder & Chief Energy Officer of PTHR. In 2022 I was ranked Number 1 Most Influential HR Thinker by HR Magazine. In 2023 I was inducted into the HR Most Influential Hall of Fame. In 2024, I was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from WorldBlu for service to self-managed and democratic, freedom-centred work.

My short form bio is 30+; 20+: 10+. 
30+ years experience in Change and Transformation through technology, 20+ years as an HR Professional and 10+ years since founding PTHR.

My personal mission is to see more people flourish through their work and help shift organisations into a force for societal good (not just profit machines). 

PTHR's mission is defined as "Better Business for a Better World". 

In October 2017, my first book, Transformational HR, was published by Kogan Page and The Energized Workplace was published in August 2020. The 2nd Edition of Transformational HR was published in July 2021.

In 2021 our first research report "The State of HR" was published with HR Zone, and refreshed in 2023. PTHR, the OD Academy and HR Zone also published "The State of OD".

I am a 5x nominated HR Most Influential Thinker 2017-2022 (4x Top 10). I was also named the most influential HR and Transformation Professional by Corporate Vision Magazine.

I'm really fortunate in being asked to be a guest on a fair few podcasts. The format of conversational exchange is why we like things like chat shows and interview slots on current affairs, sport etc.

So I think I'm a decent judge on what a good podcast experience is like as a guest. And there's the OrgDev Podcast with Garin & Dani I had the pleasure of recording yesterday. A whole new level of good!

Yes, it was about my new book The HR Operating Model - so that's a great plug for that body of work.

But more so, it was about what reading the book, Garin and Dani gleaned from it to talk about the state of the OD and HR Profession that was most enjoyable. I was prepared for it, but I abandoned some of that in favour of the flow of terrific prompts and curioisities from Garin and Dani.

Without a doubt, I'm going to plug this podcast and dive into the catalogue of great content already in the bag. It's not just for OD and HR folks this - but it will have super strong appeal to those folks - it's for anyone who cares about the ways we can continually enhance working experiences, organisational purpose and performance and individual learning and fulfillment.

Dani and I have:

🔹Kicked off a new leadership programme for a portfolio of private equity–backed, high-growth companies – both virtually and in person.
 🔸Carried out research for an upcoming Board and Senior Leadership Team away day, working closely with the Chair and CEO to make sure they’re aligned and clear on the task ahead.
 🔹Supported a ‘team of teams’ to apply systems thinking to how they work individually and collectively in a fast-paced environment.
 🔸Delivered a strategy day for a high-growth company with big ambitions – helping their senior team step up to lead the next stage of growth.
 🔹Run numerous leadership coaching sessions with senior managers
 🔸Recorded an OrgDev Podcast with Garin & Dani episode with the brilliant Perry Timms, exploring his new book HR Operating Model 3.0.
 🔹Held the kick-off meeting for a new culture transformation programme we’ve just been awarded.
 🔸Had a final planning meeting with the inspiring Eva Appelbaum, who’ll be our special guest for our next CIPD OD&D Network event: Chaos vs. Control – The human reality of transformation. Details soon!

 🔹And finally, delivered a CIPD Culture & Transformation Group session with the outstanding Susanne Gidda on operating models.

A full week – and one that’s reminded me how organisation development helps shape not just what organisations do, but how they think, learn and lead.

Our mission is to raise awareness of how organisation development can support our organisations and our people at this important moment in time.

Polymorphic Organisations Part III - Spaces

What IF we had the chance to redesign completely how work gets done, even in the largest enterprises on the planet?

It's my assertion that work doesn't REALLY get done in Divisions, or Functions or Directorates solely, it gets done best in Spaces. 

Customer Spaces, Technology Spaces, Culture Spaces, Leadership Spaces, and Production Spaces.

We have just gotten so used to the mechanical, linearity and vertical elements of how we're organised, but what if we took that away?

Spaces are where work wants us to do the work. Not be squeezed into a silo or pipe. 

Careers want us to journey across spaces and not have to climb stratified ladders.

And Culture certainly doesn't care enough about our structural frames. It wants to roam free and be what it needs in the spaces where we go to do the work together - in the best possible combination of intentions, attitudes, beliefs, skills, drive, stamina, tools and participation.

So this Part III on Substack is all about reimagining and reconfiguring work as spaces, not divisive divisions.

Incredibly appreciative of feedback like this; from one of the most stand-out People Professionals I've come across. Thanks, Coleen Highfield for being not only a fantastic part of this pioneering cohort but also for the support and cheerleading of what we're trying to do with things like this.

It all started with Deloitte's Human Capital Trends Report in 2024 and a perfect segue way into the work I was doing on HR 3.0 and the HR Operating Model book.

What we've found is that this programme is an ideal "applied" approach to the more pioneering side of HR that makes something like HR 3.0 a much more viable shift in operating models.

And without a doubt, we attracted the most committed and creative people in the virtual room to experience it and shape it.

Virtual learning can sometimes get a bad rep, but this was proof that when tackling a complex area, part-prompted shares, discussions, group work, shared digital spaces, and just applied ways make for a good and lighter-touch "programme" of learning.

Without a doubt, this was a group of learners that make facilitation a dream.

Looking forward to continuing to learn together and for the next wave who can come together for our Bravo Cohort.
