At ERM Power I am building Agile Portfolio Management from the ground up.  As the organisation adapts from a traditional energy retailer into an energy solutions provider, it needs to shift away from it's dependency on traditional project management and legacy systems and move to rapid delivery and cloud-based solutions that can be quickly expanded to meet the demands of a highly competitive market.

My role is to transform delivery through training, processes, definition of roles and ways of working, and to bring our business stakeholders on the journey.  I am building a modern, lean PMO from the ground up.  All the while we need to continue delivering business value and meet the immediate needs of the business.

Business Engagement and Program Manager

At UniSuper my time is split between building a highly effective Agile delivery team, and overseeing delivery across the full SDLC. I am responsible for a team of four Delivery Leads (Business Analyst / Iteration Manager), who lead and coach their own individual feature teams. I have built this team, and this capability, together with an Agile coach over the past 2.5 years through constant mentoring, coaching, people development, recruitment, role definition and change management.

I am additionally responsible for managing the production support function, the backlog evaluation and discovery function, the project kick-offs with the business, and benefit measures and reporting of ROI. I manage a weekly scrum of scrums with my team of delivery leads, a forward-looking 90 day plan to manage release activities and dependencies, and run adhoc workshops for breaking down strategic initiatives and turning them into a backlog of work.  I manage another 3 business analysts performing enhancements to core UniSuper systems.

I am the key engagement point between our Digital Delivery Centre and the business, having setup a process and method of evaluating and prioritising Digital initiatives in a large portfolio of work. I work with senior stakeholders including C-level executives.

I work together with an Agile coach to mentor, coach and optimise an overall team of approximately 50 resources responsible for delivering customer-facing value to 250,000 online customers, in an award-winning, industry leading company managing $60 billion in funds under management. We work in a complex, traditional financial services company, and we constantly push against the boundaries of complexity and bureaucracy with demonstrated success.

I have worked closely with the Digital Program Director to implement continuous improvement initiatives across the board, in terms of customer-centricity, DevOps, quality improvements, efficiency gains, increased UX, and so on.

Agile Business Analysis Program Manager - Digital

✓ Successful completion of members’ website transformation for 250,000+ online members, leading to rollover-in of an additional $300+ million into the fund.

I moved to a team leadership role within Digital where I led the team of Business Analysts.  I focussed on uplifting the capability of the team.

Lead Business Analyst & Iteration Manager - Digital Agile Transformation

✓ Successfully delivered identity verification - the ability for both staff and members to verify a member's identity electronically, allowing them to perform critical online transactions.

I was assigned as the solution champion for the rollout of electronic identity verification across the organisation.  In this capacity I worked with the business leads from operations, financial advice, member services, and legal services to build a set of working requirements that would satisfy the business as a whole.

Senior Business Analyst - Digital Program

Working for Rice Warner as a Digital Consultant, I worked primarily with ANZ Bank during this time, and also with leading Super funds.

Developed a multi-million dollar robo-advice platform for ANZ Bank. A core platform underpinning their comprehensive digital advice transformation program.

Prototyped the Financial Health Tool - part of the innovation strategy of Peter Dalton and Maile Carnegie.  The prototype design later became the foundation for ANZ's new retail platform - ANZ plus.

Digital Consultant

Victorian Electoral Commission

✓ Successful delivery of the pioneering electronic voting system for the Victorian Electoral Commission. The hand held application was successfully used in the 2014 Victorian General State election.

The VEC employed the world's leading experts on cryptography, privacy, security and voting protocols to build an end to end solution to be used in Victoria's elections, and to eventually be made available to the world via open source.

I worked closely with the business to elicit and refine requirements for the software in the first half of the project, and delegated to more junior BAs once the project grew in scope in the second half of the project.  I facilitated usability meetings and requirements gathering workshops with the business to ensure the software met the standards of the business. I also facilitated Time and Motion studies with end users to ensure that the software satisfied the requirements of two key demographics; blind and low-vision users, and non-English speaking users.  

I successfully navigated difficult change requests from the business that occurred late in the project. I managed to convince the business that fundamental changes late in the project would add unnecessary cost and risk into the project.

I guided the business through selection of the best of breed solution, through research and development. I raised key concerns and issues regarding warranties, deployment, testing, and maintenance with their proposed solution.  I delivered a world-class open source solution that I documented for other organisations around the world to be able to customise and configure the software to their own needs.

The system was successfully used in the 2014 Victorian General Election.

The software was built using Java and Javascript, was deployed onto an Android device, used qUnit and Selenium for testing, and Tiny Validator for JSON.

I have worked with a broad range of clients to gather and refine business requirements, and steer them through their choices when investing in software solutions.  I have also spent time assessing technology to determine best fit for these clients.  I work closely with development teams to ensure good execution and quality deliverables.  I use my extensive Software Development Life Cycle knowledge to get the best possible result.  I am constantly improving processes by measuring outcomes and examining techniques. I am constantly improving decision making exercises by laying out the key information to stakeholders in a format that they can understand.

In my time working with Mobiliser I have developed their business templates; Business Requirements Specification, Use Cases, User Stories.

I have implemented test strategies for Regression Testing and Integration Testing, using unit testing frameworks such as qUnit, jUnit, Mockito, Jasmine.  Also, I have automated User Acceptance Testing using Selenium.

I have developed a software development methodology called Rubicon, that focuses on building certainty into software from day one.  I used this successfully on the vVote project with VEC.  I have developed partnerships with major software vendors such as IBM and Bosch.

I configure development and test environments, and help define coding standards and design standards. I push for adherence to web standards and A level compliance, having worked with even AAA level Accessibility compliance on disability applications.

Senior Business Analyst

The Good Guys

The Good Guys were in the process of upgrading their retail sales and catalog management software, to be rolled out across their 97 stores. They needed a software solution that allowed them to finely tune pricing according to a range of factors, and have the changes immediately reflected nation-wide.

The business was defining requirements on the fly according to desirable functions and behaviour in an uncoordinated manner. The software our team built for them was critical to sales staff and promotion management, and core to their competitiveness in the market, so I spent time with the business group gathering requirements and documenting the business processes of their sales strategy.

I facilitated requirements workshops with them to draw out first the business need of their ideas, then the User Stories. I helped provide the business group with concepts and ideas that were easy to implement with the given technology. The business group was greatly impressed that I had taken this initiative, and they chose my employer as their Master Vendor based on my contribution.  

The software was delivered very rapidly and successfully, and was rolled out in record time without defects.  The software was built in Java, accessed Oracle databases, used Hudson C.I and Agile methodology.

Victorian Department of Primary Industries

I consulted with various stakeholders within the department to build a Customer Relationship Management system to fit their needs.  I assessed the current open source products available, formed a competitive matrix, and selected the best of breed solution according to the requirements I documented from my workshops.  I customised the open source software, and worked with end users to deliver a solid solution.  

The CRM software could be accessed from anywhere in the world to add new contacts and leads while staff were away on conferences and at meetings.

I also worked on a project that would allow staff to edit their GIS data assets, as well as perform live transformations of GIS data for external users of their data.  I worked closely with the key GIS data expert to gather requirements to design and build this complex solution.
