I know we love talking about Duolingo’s social but I want to talk about this. 

Because this 1,000% caused me to open up the app today and do my Korean lesson and I guarantee you that hundreds of thousands if not millions of users re-opened up their app when they saw this…. and it’s so gd simple it’s almost infuriating. 

As marketers, we spend so much time on the top and middle of the funnel and hang up our coats when we hit acquisition but we too often forget about loyalty and return and this is such a beautifully thoughtful (and insanely simple) way to do this without having to send notifications or emails that we all mute or archive.

We often give flowers to Zaria and the social team (deservingly) but today here’s a bouquet 💐 to the product marketing and product design team.

Ok, I don’t know who is in charge of UX design at United Airlines, but you need to slow down. You’re making the rest of us look bad. 

Full on UX service ecosystem.  …and it feels like it popped up over night!  (Though I fully realize this is the culmination of years of hard work)

From little cards with cool airplane facts for my kids to self loading gate maps on my phone to multichannel email communication… hands down the best UX I’ve ever had on a flight. 

And I can really tell someone sweat the small details  like the seat screen navigation, bag tracking communication interface, and iPhone island integration. 

Oh, and one more thing… Bluetooth headphones!! 
(I’ve been waiting for this for a decade)

Importantly, it wasn’t any one of these things that made a noticeable difference, but the combination of all of them in concert.

Everyone is talking about LLMs and generative AI these days—what I get really excited about is all the possibilities of combining these with other cutting-edge technologies. Here are two examples:

1️⃣ Birdbrain is Duolingo’s machine learning model for predicting whether a learner will get a given exercise right. Using data from the billion exercises our users do per day, Birdbrain can generate practice sessions that land exactly 🎯 in your sweet spot: not so easy that you don’t learn anything new, but not so challenging that you get discouraged. (Read about it here: https://shorturl.at/lLM38)

Right now, our session generator tailors personalizes lessons from a large set of existing exercises. It’s an extremely effective way to learn—but like all practice, it can get a bit repetitive. 

Here’s where generative AI comes in: instead of picking from existing exercises, practice sessions can be built from a much larger pool of sentences built with the help of generative AI. These sessions still help you practice concepts that you’ve already learned, calibrated to your exact level, but the content itself will be new to you! Exercises start to feel less like practice and more like a real-life situation of speaking in a new language, where you won’t understand everything and will have to figure things out from context. 

2️⃣ I’m also excited about our collaboration with Rive, an animation platform that uses state machines to describe how animated objects move. Our animators create a library of animations by hand from “rigs” created in Rive, that can be manipulated (like puppets!). Our engineers can then use genAI to write scripts that can trigger playback of animations, change the position of assets, move the camera, and so much more! There’s a world of possibilities for the interactive usage of the animations we create! (The character’s mouth movements, aka “visemes”, are a great example of this: https://shorturl.at/AEKX7). 

This allows our animators to do much more, much more quickly—and there’s a lot of potential for future features combining this technology with the creative capabilities of generative AI. 👀

Here's why everyone is talking about THAT new Burger King campaign 😲





Ageism in advertising:
46% of US adult are 50 and up. Yet only 15% of online images containing adults include people in this age group. CRAZY. Because every brand under the sun is obsessed with Gen Z, but there is SO much emotion, power and nostalgia at play when you tell the story of over 50's.

Concept:
So simple. For Burger King's 70th anniversary: 
'70 years later the fire’s still burning.' 
Goosebumps. Not much more to say on this point.

Art direction:
The visuals are bold, cinematic, frisky and fantastic. Yes, I DO want to see 70 year olds making out in the Burger King carpark. Why? Because what a beautiful moment of hope and romance and magic for us all. Maybe one day, this might be us, too.

I look forward to seeing Room 23 (Brazil) win a Cannes Award in June 😉

“If Stripe is a monstrously successful business, but what we make isn’t beautiful, and Stripe doesn’t embody a culture of incredibly exacting craftsmanship, I’ll be much less happy ... the returns to both of those things in the world are really high. I think even beyond the pecuniary or financial returns, the world’s just uglier than it needs to be… One can do things well or poorly, and beauty is not a rivalrous good.”

Patrick believes a commitment to craftsmanship and beauty played an important role in Stripe’s success:

At Seamless.AI from Day 1 to almost 6 years now, I’ve received my MBA in the School of “Hard Knocks” 

🙏Startup years are equivalent to dog years so to still be getting fired up to come to work is a blessing and still so excited about the future of this company!!!!

The true thing I’ve been most proud of and main reason I’m still here grinding away is because I’ve loved building my career with Play-Doh and turning it into whatever I’ve visualized inside my head on who I wanted to be. 

Hard work, educating myself and doing it with my own conviction paved my way to this next role. Even though my job titles over the years have changed drastically to adapt to the scrappy, whatever it takes startup lifestyle… I’ve always known where my North Star was on where I wanted to go.

I’ve literally done every job you can think of:

✅ SDR (Lasted 3 days) - Thanks Michael H. & Blake Nolan for hiring me and getting me quickly into a better role where we needed dire help. Proud to say besides poor role playing… never made a single call to a prospect 😂 HUGE respect to EVERY SDR cold calling. A REAL SKILL!!

✅ PR Manager, Hiring Manager & Executive Assisant (Year 1) - Thanks Brandon Bornancin & Danielle Demming  for showing me what building a business from scratch REALLY looks like! (Also Hannah Oxenford for becoming the first REAL Recruiter we desperately needed)

🧩 Happy National Autism Awareness Day! 🧩

With April being National Autism Awareness Month, I want to take the time to shed light on a topic that is very near and dear to my heart.

But first, let me explain what Autism is in case we aren't completely aware... 

Autism is a lifelong, non-progressive neurological disorder that significantly affects verbal and non-verbal communication and social interaction on a wide spectrum. There is no medication or cure, however a person with autism can absolutely live a normal life with the right support and resources. Early intervention such as a variety of therapy (speech, occupational, ABA, and for some, physical therapy), education, and community support are key factors in helping people with autism achieve their goals and lead fulfilling lives. According to the Autism Speaks website and the CDC, as of 2023, 1 out of every 36 children in America have been diagnosed with Autism, with boys being nearly 4 times more likely to be diagnosed with Autism than girls. 

My now 5 year old son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at 18 months old. I had heard of this disorder before, but I was not completely aware of it before then, so I did what any good parent would... I educated myself! I wanted to read about it all - the why's and the how's, the resources available, the community I had no idea existed, etc. I read tons of pamphlets, joined a bunch of Facebook groups, and connected with strangers in the strongest way possible!

I have seen first hand that someone with Autism should not be defined as such. My son still wants to be loved and understood and accepted. In fact, he is the most loving person I have ever met! And although he is still completely non-verbal, he has learned to communicate with us in his own way and is now the most demanding person I know, without even having to say a word!

I say all this because it breaks my heart knowing my child has to try SO hard everyday to fit in what is deemed "appropriate" for our way of living and society, rather than US trying harder to fit into his. So please, I ask that you just be kind and take a moment to step back, learn, and understand. I, and every ASD parent, also ask that you teach your kids to be kind too!

Awareness is Education, so I appreciate you reading this and letting me teach you a little something today. 💙

And MAN... I have to make a series on rebrands because I LOVE TOP TIER REBRANDING... I've been blown away watching The Premier League and seeing how unified, beautiful, unique, and every other complimentary adjective on what this brand has turned into.

Shoutout to Nomad Studio on leading the way on strategy, identity, campaign, digital, naming, whatever you can think of. They played a pivotal part in building easily one of the best, most recognizable expansions and rebrands for a business.
