MOlecular-Scale Biophysics Research Infrastructure (MOSBRI)

MOSBRI aims to address the pressing need for a truly integrated and multi-methodological taskforce, combining the best up-to-date instrumentation and the best expertise available in Europe, to the benefit of all researchers in the fields of biomedicine, biotechnology, biomaterials and beyond, from both academia and industry (notably SMEs). MOSBRI networks 2 industrial partners and 13 academic centres of excellence from 11 different countries, each having unique and complementary expertise, and all currently offering biophysics services within schemes based on institutional policies. MOSBRI provides access to a truly integrated panel of methodological tools and associated expertise, enabling breakthrough scientific discoveries concerning the molecular basis of biological processes and the development of novel therapeutic and prophylactic treatments. In addition, continuous improvement of laboratory practices and cross-fertilization between centres will be attained through exchange of staff, joint research activities and multi-laboratory benchmarking actions.

I come from a family of craftsmen and grew up in a small village in the north of Bavaria. Now I am founder and CEO of the  globally operating Biotech company NanoTemper. 

What drives me is:
🧬 to develop biophysical and AI based tools to help fight diseases like cancer and Alzheimer. 
🐱‍🏍 to inspire you to overcome the limits you set for yourself. To think big and globally. 
🖖 to stand for democracy and equality

I love to engage with people, to learn something new and to get inspired. I enjoy my life together with my beloved once and find beauty in the small things.  
Running, swimming, soccer and science fiction are my favorite hobbies. To learn surfing a new goal. 

I am proud, that I’ve been named as one of Germany’s most promising talents younger than 40 in 2015 and that I’ve also won the German Founders Award and several awards for innovation. This was made possible by the special people who believed in me, inspired me and supported me.

A quiet revolution gave me my life.

1979–1989. I’m a child in Bavaria. A few miles from the border. I can see the other side. It looks the same. I’m told it isn’t.

1989, people with candles choose courage.
1990, Germany becomes one, without war.
A peaceful change. Still the world’s miracle to me.

What was over there?
The love of my life. We’re married now.
Unity isn’t a headline. It’s a home.

Today the winds feel colder.
Walls are trending again: digital, social, mental.

Three rules I keep from those years:
* Build bridges before you judge.
* Disagree without disrespect.
* Bring in people who weren’t in the room, and give them a seat at the table.

That’s how I work. I build trust - or I build nothing.

October 3 is not nostalgia.
It’s a to-do list: call someone across your line, invite a colleague you disagree with, mentor one who feels they don’t belong. Small acts. Repeated.

Unity is a verb. And it’s our job.

Some years ago a new team member ran a vital meeting. Clear agenda. Solid prep. She was fully present on camera. Then a senior employee took a phone call and later acted as if he hadn’t read the prep email. I felt anger rise. I almost lost my temper.

After the meeting I spoke up. I told the senior employee his behaviour was unacceptable and asked him to apologise to her. A week later the new team member told me, with tears in her eyes, that this was the first time a boss had stepped in like that. She thanked me. That apology built trust.

Standing up for people and principles is not theatre. It’s the backbone of a team. Trust turns strategy into everyday reality.

Ideas often look obvious.. after someone does them.

The “Egg of Columbus” is the perfect example: once you see it, you think, I could have done that. But before someone tries, it’s said to be “impossible.”

That’s how entrepreneurship works.

No innovation looks obvious. Not to investors. Not to friends. Sometimes not even to you. It only becomes “clear” after you've shipped the first product and customers have used it.

What I’ve learned about turning “impossible” into “obvious”:

* Ship something small. A prototype beats a perfect pitch.

*Expect the chorus. “I knew it!” arrives the day after you launch. Smile and keep building.

* Share the credit. Bridges to big things are built by people: mentors, early customers, dedicated teammates.
