In a constantly changing world overloaded with information, input, and distractions, being able to manage our energy and attention becomes an ever more vital skill.

Martin will kick things off with an overview of energy and state management, so that you can cultivate your awareness and learn about some tools that can support you in shifting from time-focused to energy-focused routines.

As it happens, this is highly relevant for Flow States too. And that is where my focus will be. We'll briefly explore the science of Flow, and most importantly the art, the habits, and tools to find your flow.

Because in the constant noise of our busy work life it can be hard to find focus, and without focus, there is little quality work. And so we end up spending most of our work time doing ‘busy work’ with little to no value.

You will undoubtedly have heard of ‘work smarter, not harder’. Well, that sounds nice, but how to actually do it?

That's what we're setting out to help you with.

Ultimately, what we aim for, is that you can achieve more with less. However, endless self-optimization is NOT the goal.


So here's a question for you to reflect on:

Let's assume you optimized your work routines and through your elevated focus and productivity, you'd be delivering the expected work by working 6 hours per day.

What would you do with the freed-up time?

Are you on track or between tracks? 🛤️ 

In a recent conversation I was presented with a powerful metaphor.

In some moments in life you are going full steam ahead. You’re on track, know your direction, the train is pushing ahead. 🚄 

But then there are the moments when you arrive at a train station. And then the question arises:

Where do I go next?

🚉 These are our transition moments in life, when you stand in the middle of a huge train station with hundreds of options to choose from, people going left and right, noise, announcements, you feel like being dragged to one side, and then to the other.

You got off the train. Maybe it was planned and you know what your connection train is, but maybe you don't. Or maybe the stop wasn’t even planned. The train made an unscheduled stop.

Now what?

It's in these moments of transition where coaching is the most powerful. 

Instead of drowning in the overwhelm of the busy train station, it creates a quiet space where you can slow down to think clearly.

What are the options?
Where could you go?
Where would you like to be in two hours from now? In two days? In two months? In two years?

It’s a bit like the friendly information staff at the train station, they can’t tell you where to go, you’ve got to figure out that for yourself. But they can still help you with that. With exploring the options and making the decision. By accompanying you to buy your ticket, find that train, and get on board, knowing that it was the right decision.

Perhaps the coach will board with you and join you for the ride. And will continue to be on your side for that journey until the next train station, or the one after that.

But eventually the coach will bid you farewell at one of the stations. And when you arrive at the next one, you might know which train to take. Or you will just stay there for a while. Or you might not, but you'll find another coach, who will be suitable in this new place to find your next destination. 

This is one ways I see coaching, as a temporary companion on your journey through life.🚂 

Next week, together with Martin Angehrn we'll be creating such a space to slow down and think. Revising where you are and how you're doing:
- Are you in the train or at a train station?
- Is the train on track, or off track?
- How are you doing where you are?  
- How is your energy? 
- How clear is the journey ahead?
- How can you make the journey more enjoyable and fulfilling?

We'll cover that and more and there are still some spots available.

How's your Energy at Work? How's your Flow at Work?

The way we work is broken in many ways, but it doesn't have to be that way.

I believe that just two fundamental shifts can make a big difference:

1. Shift your focus from managing your time to managing your energy. 🔋
2. Learn to train, maintain, and protect your focus. 👀

The 9-5 schedule is obsolete, even more so since we were all forced to work remotely and have adapted to that new normal.

Companies demanding their teams back to the office are fighting windmills. There's no going back. Hybrid is here to stay. And that requires a shift in culture.

Like any transformation in a company, if you want it to stick, you have to make it part of the culture.

And what applies to culture is also true for our own mindset.

If we want to shift to energy management, then we have to let go of obsessing about the numbers of hours we work. 

If we want to find our focus, and eventually our flow, we need to start building systems and environments that help us do exactly that.

The point of freeing up time by working smarter, is not to fill up the hours with more work. That's again working harder rather than smarter.

It is tempting, you will likely get even more done in the same time.

But at a high long-term cost. 🔥

Just like athletes, if they keep pushing too hard, they eventually falter. It is no different with corporate athletes. Or entrepreneurial atheletes. Or anyone with high ambitions. However, it is important to take care of yourself too.
