26% of companies now have a Chief AI Officer (CAIO). Here's what the first results show: 

Governance and structure
→ Authority is key: 57% of CAIOs report directly to CEO or Board of Directors 
→ As organizations mature, their structure shifts from decentralized models (used by 40% in pilot phase) to hub-and-spoke (40%) or centralized (30%) models for scaled AI investments.
→ Despite the role's large impact, the average CAIO team is lean, with just 
five people.

The ROI payback:
→ Organizations with CAIOs see 10% greater ROI on AI spend 
→ The right operating model amplifies this: CAIOs leading centralized or hub-and-spoke models see 36% higher AI ROI than those with decentralized models
→ CAIOs leading centralized models move 2x as many AI pilots into production

Budget and resources:
→ 61% of CAIOs have control over their organization's AI budget 
→ This investment is set to grow, as CEOs project annual increases of 
31% in AI spending over the next two years

The most important point I see, and also echoed in this report and others, is that AI transformation can't get pawned off to a CAIO but should remain a collective mission for the entire C-suite. Shared collective fluency and ownership of AI is still the most important success factor in my mind, with the CAIO as an orchestrator, rather than a siloed owner.
