So exciting to join the Belgian Economic Mission to San Francisco this week. 

It's great to visit some of our existing and new partners at Nvidia, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce, Palo Alto Networks, and Google with BOI (Board of Innovation) and dive into their latest AI breakthroughs.

The big themes so far:
→  Beyond GenAI - lots of pioneering examples in Agentic AI (and especially making it real beyond the current hype), and Physical AI (as the next wave, already very real today with Waymo's self-driving taxis omnipresent across town). 
→ "We’re only one mistake away from irrelevance.” I loved this quote from Nvidia. We're still only in the first inning of AI development and transformation. The space is moving so fast and we're still in full divergence. Everyone needs to stay on their feet (incl Google with search disruption, Apple in the search for an AI-native consumer device, etc)
→ "US is innovating, Europe is regulating." A growing desire to more ambitious and bold in Europe - in technology, business and defense. While foundational models are mostly being built in the US (and China), there is still so much potential for innovation in the business application layer. 
→ "AI will not replace humans/jobs." Maybe a bit more of a controversial one but a lot of talks state that AI won't replace humans or jobs - and I personally don't agree with that. I get why it's said and why it's a message that sells. I agree we need to design systems that actually advance humanity. But, I think we should expect and prep for what Schumpeter once coined as 'creative destruction', where some jobs will be taken over by AI and new ones will be created. Better to mindfully prepare for it as a society, then to blindly run into it. 
→ AI or not, people are still people. Genuinely connecting and doing business, often at night over a nice (Belgian) beer 🍻 That's reassuring :)

Now over to LA for the second stretch.

CEO at BOI and AUTONOMOUS | Helping companies become AI-first sooner

That's a wrap! 🇧🇪🇺🇸 The second leg of the Belgian Economic Mission took us to LA and it didn't disappoint.

For BOI (Board of Innovation) it's been an exciting trip: visiting clients, spotting AI-powered entertainment/media innovations, and meeting lots of really nice people.

My LA highlights:

→ Watching beautiful AI-created short movies by some of the Hollywood heavyweights at Infinity Festival. Learning about what they are really looking for next in terms of AI: more control (f.e. in directing camera movements) and better temporal consistency across frames.

→ Hearing from producers and directors on how AI now enables them to test out the massive amount of scripts they get, through a quick proof of concept, where previously that was way too expensive. Learning from the SVP Gaming at Disney how they see AI unlocking a long tail of niche games. And everyone playing around with Sora 2 :)

→ Visiting the first-of-its-kind Tesla diner in West Hollywood. Really nice burgers and fries (coming from a Belgian), plus a supercharging station and drive-in theater in one.

→ Rewatching The Matrix at the Cosm theater, an immersive dome similar to the sphere in Las Vegas but a lot smaller. Very immersive experience for watching sports events and entertainment. Highly recommended if you get the chance! Thanks Ruben and Philippe for bringing us along 👊

This week was packed with everything we needed - apart from sleep maybe :) Back to Belgium now ✈️
