Inspiring Better Healthcare Globally - Transforming the Future!

As a Digitalization Humanist, Futurist, and Innovation Key Opinion Leader, I regularly speak at international events about cutting-edge technologies such as Digital Health, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Big Data, Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality, 5G, Blockchain, and Healthcare in the Metaverse. However, I believe that while these technologies are truly remarkable, it is crucial to always prioritize people in our design process to ensure that technology serves humans and not the other way around.

Prior to this, I spent approximately 30 years in global roles in big multinationals, primarily in the pharmaceutical industry (about 15 years at Novartis & 1 year at Lonza) and previously in the specialty chemicals industry (about 15 years at Ciba & Ciba Specialty Chemicals). I was fortunate to travel the world and encounter a diverse range of cultures, which was an incredible experience.

As I enter my early retirement phase, I feel compelled to give back to the community. I feel responsible for the world we are handing over to future generations, and I want to support their efforts to create positive change. Although some may argue that I am not personally responsible for the world's issues, I believe that we all have a role to play in creating a better future.

Currently, I serve as an executive advisor, board member, industry advisor, or consultant for various companies in Switzerland, France, UK, India, Kenya, Singapore, and China, primarily in the healthcare industry, but also in manufacturing or supply chain.

It was equally meaningful to reconnect again with my close friend Alex Diaconu and Cuc Georgiana as well as Dylan Attard MD, MRCSI, MEnt., Yulia Yurevich, Shara Layton and the entire MedTech World team who delivered an outstanding 2025 edition. Their 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 continues to elevate this event year after year.⁣

One moment that deeply touched me happened when I saw a group of young female students chatting together. I approached them and asked if they would like a picture with my brother and legend Professor Shafi Ahmed. What followed was a beautiful exchange when they told us they were medical students from 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐭’𝐬 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐨𝐳𝐨, the very institution where Shafi played a key role in launching the first cohort. Witnessing their excitement and admiration was a powerful reminder of the importance of 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 and 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. 💡📚⁣

Last week’s panel at MedTech World 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐚 was an exceptional experience in an iconic setting, bringing together brilliant minds to explore one of the most urgent questions of our time: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲?⁣⁣

It was a privilege to contribute to this dialogue, and to share what I consider one of the most important principles for the future of health:⁣⁣

This simple sentence captures a profound shift: from chasing extended lifespan to cultivating 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐟𝐮𝐥, 𝐯𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 for everyone.⁣⁣

During the discussion, our moderator pushed us with a key question:⁣⁣

👉 “𝐈𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐨𝐭?”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
My answer was intentionally challenging. Ageing is not a disease in the traditional sense but it is driven by biological processes that 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞, 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞. If we only label ageing as “natural,” we limit innovation. If we label it as “pathological,” we risk oversimplification.⁣⁣

In reality, 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, and the future of health lies in addressing these mechanisms before they manifest as illness.⁣⁣

The energy in the room, the depth of the exchanges, and the remarkable diversity of perspectives reminded me once again why Malta has become a key hub for innovation and forward-looking thinking in healthtech. I am grateful for the opportunity to be on stage with such inspiring experts and grateful to the MedTech World team for creating a space for bold and honest conversations.⁣⁣

Many still believe it will “tell them when they will die,” although genomics does nothing of that sort. Just as we routinely check cholesterol or glucose, we should also understand our genetic risks to prevent disease long before it appears.⁣

As Dr. Kapoor reminded us, up to one in seven people do not even respond to common medications such as aspirin. Personalized medicine is no longer a futuristic concept, it is a moral obligation.⁣
