At San Roberto International School, my Year 5 classroom was a hub of AI-enhanced project-based Learning and STEAM innovation focused on Sustainability. We explored real-world issues like water scarcity, designed solutions like community Sustainability Campaigns, and connected maths to colonising Mars.

Project-based learning (PBL) was at the heart of our approach, and I was the first teacher to pilot a full PBL approach to classroom teaching.

School-wide exhibitions showcased student campaign projects, boosting confidence and demonstrating the impact of our work. Students even represented San Roberto in STEM competitions and sustainability conferences as proud ambassadors of environmental innovation.

My goal was to spark a lifelong passion for learning and empower students to make a difference. Through integrating STEM, PBL, and sustainability, I saw a growth in scientific understanding, problem-solving skills, and most importantly, the belief in their power to create a more sustainable future.

We began to use AI to enhance learning materials, and this led to outstanding results and led me to pursue my startup project, AIxPBL.

As a Digital Specialist deployed in a region with Australia's lowest digital literacy rates, I faced a formidable challenge. To address this, I spearheaded a project-based learning (PBL) and Digital Literacy initiative targeting both students and staff.  The project aimed to cultivate digital fluency while tackling real-world issues within the community.  Results were astounding—participants demonstrated marked improvement in digital dexterity. This experience underscored my ability to translate complex pedagogical strategies into transformative outcomes within even the most challenging environments.

I founded AIxPBL to transform education through ethical and inclusive AI-enhanced Project-Based Learning (PBL).  My goal is to make learning culturally responsive, cognitively inclusive, immersive and personalised using tools like the Metaverse and game-based learning.

Through AIxPBL, I work on various projects around the World, systems thinking, sustainability, and AI integration in education. Collaborations with governments, NGOs, and schools like Colegio Ikagai (Mexico City), EDUMetaverse, and iCamp (NYC) drive this mission.

I enjoy being a podcast guest, sharing my insights on how AI is shaping learning, and how AI Literacy is much more than technology.

AI Literacy: Think Beyond the Algorithm
Why systems thinking is your secret weapon in a complex AI world

Hey everyone, let's cut through all the jargon. Sure, AI algorithms are cool, but the real magic happens when we understand how AI interacts with the world around it.

Think about it - "A system is more than the sum of its parts..." Powerful words from Donella Meadows, pioneer of "Thinking in Systems," and they've changed how I think about AI literacy.

See, AI is exploding – transforming everything.

To ride this wave, we need to go beyond the tech and think about the bigger picture – that's where systems thinking kicks in.

Why does this matter?
-For educators: Bored students when you say "AI?" Systems thinking flips that. Think AI + climate change solutions, AI to transform learning... now THAT gets them buzzing! It's about real impact.
-For businesses: AI shouldn't be a scary black box. Systems thinking gives you the x-ray vision to ask the right questions: How will AI change our workflow? Which skills do WE need? This isn't about robots taking over, but about thriving alongside them.

Meadows said it best, "We can't impose our will on a system...discover how its properties and our values can work together."

We need curiosity, a dash of humility, and a willingness to see AI as part of a larger interconnected web.

Okay, but how?
Systems thinking is a journey. Tools like system maps can help, but it's really a change in mindset.

It's admitting 'I don't know everything,' but being brave enough to keep asking:
-How can I use this AI ethically and responsibly?
-What ripples will this create out in the world, good and bad?

Meadows reminds us, "The future... can be envisioned and brought lovingly into being."

Systems thinking helps us envision a future with AI that WORKS, is fair, and benefits everyone.

Let's make that vision a reality!
