Bitcoin has returned more than four times the S&P 500 since 2020 but its latest 5% dip has inspired the media to use words like "crash" and "collapse."

Yet the world's largest cryptocurrency is up almost 400% in five years, far outpacing the benchmark index.

That outperformance has come with outsized volatility. Since 2015, bitcoin has seen countless severe declines: 

🔴 10x declines of 35% or more
🔴 5x declines of 50%
🔴 3x declines of over 70% 

Despite the media reaction, long-term holders don't even notice a 4% dip.

Kevin Hassett is set to succeed Jerome Powell as the next Chairman of the Federal Reserve. 

At least that’s what prediction markets are positioning for and what President Trump conspicuously hinted at. 

“I guess a potential Fed Chair is here too,” he said, speaking in the Oval Office on Tuesday. 

“I don’t know, are we allowed to say that? ‘Potential.’ He’s a respected person, that I can tell you. Thank you, Kevin.”

Hassett is currently the National Economic Council director, and he’s been vocal — like the president — about lowering interest rates this year. 

He’s been the front-runner for the top job at the central bank for several months, making Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s shortlist of five finalists that also included: 

• Fed Governor Chris Waller
• Fed Governor Michelle Bowman
• Former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh
• BlackRock exec Rick Rieder 

Hassett has been the favorite since early October, according to prediction markets. 

But now he looks like a shoe-in.

Jerome Powell's likely successor at the Fed is a crypto-bull economist

Stocks almost always go up in December but the current setup favors the bulls more than usual.

Seasonality, sector rotation, and the political cycle all point to an unusually strong probability that stocks finish the year higher. 

When the S&P 500 enters December up on the year so far — as it did this week — the index has climbed 81% of the time with an average return of 2.14%, according to an analysis by Bank of America. 

When you have the same scenario during the first year of a US presidential cycle, December has been positive 100% of the time across 13 occurrences, with an average gain of 2.03%.

Meanwhile, eight of eleven S&P 500 sectors typically finish the month higher, with Utilities, Industrials and Financials leading the way. 

All this points to more than just a Santa rally to end the year with a bang.

This December presents one of the most bullish months ever for stocks

Bitcoin's volatility is a feature, not a bug. 

Since 2018, bitcoin has averaged a 51% annual drawdown. Yet that volatility has also allowed it to average roughly double the returns of stocks and gold.

The Federal Reserve is about to cut interest rates with record-high stocks, an accelerating AI trade, strong earnings growth, and bullish seasonality for December. 

Everything points to higher asset prices. 

I shared my market outlook live at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) with Kristen Scholer.

Markets are back in the familiar territory of bad news in the economy translating to good news for asset prices. 

Stocks are near record highs following a downbeat update on the labor market from payrolls processor ADP, which reported private companies cut 32,000 in November. 

Not only did that fall well short of expectations for a gain of 40,000, it marked the sharpest decline since March 2023. 

Those numbers pushed stocks higher because, at this point, any new signs of deterioration in the labor market raises the odds for a rate cut from the Federal Reserve.

Traders see an 89% likelihood for a 25-basis-point cut on December 10, according to CME data.

That’s up from 83% one week ago and 66% one month ago.

Why bad news for jobs is good news for stocks

AI bubble fears have weighed on the stock market but veteran strategist Katie Stockton, CMT doesn't believe today's market compares to the dot-com era. 

In the late 1990s, valuations were stretched, exuberance was sky-high, and markets moved in a more parabolic fashion.

The stock market has faced no shortage of stress tests but nothing has derailed its momentum.

Days ahead of what will likely be a quarter-point rate cut from the Federal Reserve, the S&P 500 remains within 1% from its all-time high. 

That’s despite fears of an AI bubble, more signs of weakness in the labor market, looming questions surrounding succession at the Fed, and a Supreme Court battle over tariffs. 

It’d be natural to expect that cocktail of obstacles to weigh on asset prices. 

That hasn’t happened. 

And there's plenty good reason why.

The stock market continues to ignore every bearish obstacle

The market no longer believes tariffs will cause inflation. 

Traders' inflation forecasts for 2026 and 2027 are back to pre-trade war levels, as if Liberation Day never happened. 

The market confirms the vast majority of economists were very wrong on tariffs this year, as this chart from John Authers at Bloomberg illustrates.

Asset prices could keep climbing as the $7 trillion cash on the sidelines begins to rotate into the market. 

Money market yields are already drifting below 4% with the Fed set to cut rates further, and that could get more investors back into stocks. 

Todd Sohn, an ETF strategist at Strategas Securities, joined me on FULL SIGNAL to break down the outlook.

Home affordability in the US is so strained that the typical age for buying a house is now 59.

In 2010 it was 39.

The American dream has been pushed back by two decades thanks to cocktail of difficult headwinds.

• Rising home prices
• High mortgage rates
• Limited construction and inventory
• Soft wage growth versus inflation
• Over-regulation and red tape

Bitcoin is not having the year many investors expected.

The largest cryptocurrency just dipped to $93,135, turning its year-to-date returns negative by 0.03%.

At the start of 2025, many analysts and investors expected bitcoin to have a banner year given the Trump administration’s focus on cryptocurrencies, expectations for lower interest rates, and accelerating demand from ETFs.

That hasn’t exactly panned out. 

Although crypto adoption has broadened to governments and nation states, and bitcoin now underpins some of the most popular products on Wall Street, the tailwinds that were supposed to define the year haven’t translated into price strength. 

Rather, the asset has drifted sideways as gold, stocks, and even bonds have outpaced it since January.

And yet bitcoin has only seen a negative annual return three times since 2010.
