What is it?

Rapid career growth.

Who doesn't like a promotion or that next-level title? In most cases, the offer is too good to refuse. 

While every company promotes internally or brings someone from outside with lesser experience into an elevated role, how often do the candidates think they are ready?

"The Imposer Syndrome" problem is talked about largely, and candidates are encouraged to muster courage and apply for positions even if they are 60-70% fit for that leadership role.

What is the importance of Data Enablement?

Winning with #data, #digital, and #businesstransformation is about doing specific things right from the start. 

Important stuff must never be an afterthought, but we see it happen all the time, and when that happens, it is almost always more expensive than it needs to be—manifold. 

Fixing is both complicated and will constantly make us play catchup.

How do we avoid this problem?

By taking a "By design" approach. 

The manufacturing industry has been following this approach for decades in handling design and processes, so why not benefit from it?

Product Quality and process safety are crucial in any manufacturing setup. However, these two are not considered after a production floor is set up or after a part is made. They are embedded into the core approach "By Design"

They are focused and given priority while the shop floor is designed, the component is engineered, and the manufacturing process is established. 

As simple as it seems and correct as this makes sense, many data, digital, and technology programs do this backward. 

Let's consider the following. (None of this is about tools or platforms; it is about how we approach managing these fundamentally)

1. Architecture
2. Governance
3. Quality
4. Legal
5. Privacy
6. Security
7. Training
8. Risk mgmt.
9. Regulatory
10. Compliance
11. Others - Performance, scalability, usability, adoption, maintainability, 

How many of your initiatives handle the above items "By Design?"  

While these may seem like controlling items, they are business growth accelerators and profitability enablers when done right. 

How many of these do program teams and companies consider during opportunity identification and assessment, business case justification, demand and capacity planning, and design phases? 

We think of marketing and sales but fail to consider the customer angle or internal user training. 

We aim to increase revenue but do not account for the risk management, regulatory, or compliance aspects. When an issue comes up, it is too late to address it already. 

Companies overbuy products that they don't need or will not need in the near future but do not put effort into building fundamental requirements into the process by design. 

What about value creation? The same situation. 

Unfortunately, too many teams focus on the activities and then, after significant spending, look for value justification. That's a recipe for failure, as business direction and aspirations must drive technology work and not otherwise. 

Try changing your approach to include the items mentioned above in your planning and design process, and you will start seeing results very soon. 

The question is how. What else do we need? Talent is the apparent answer, but a specific type of talent is missing from our talent strategy and development approach.

Why does #datagovernance work seem like an uphill battle? You may be throwing spaghetti on a wall and …

But first, let's look at two examples from emails I received.

"Our tool can help you build a list of 500+ contacts a day @ just 10c/lead. You get verified business email address & phone under a minute."

And do what with it?

Here is another one…

"We help Consulting companies (similar to Khyanafi) build scalable outreach systems that connect them with qualified prospects every day. 

We'll set up hundreds of emails, build a no-brainer offer, scrape your TAM, and then convert each lead into a booked call."

This came in with the subject, "Partnership Inquiry" - a misleading click/bait approach.

What is the problem with these methods? They are spaghetti that doesn't stick. The worst of the kind.

These practices don't just erode trust but prevent any chance of building trust.

Prospects and customers are not found in 10c lists and email blasts, at least not for high-value work. 

Similarly, when starting/restarting any data governance work, strategizing is essential to set yourself, your team, and the company for success from the early stages. 

Understanding the supporters, champions, and resistors is crucial. But why would data governance create resistors among your user groups?

Governance work is generally viewed as directing, monitoring, and controlling. All of these can cause anxiety among people who are not close to the process or value. These users may fear one of the below
- that your work is taking away their freedom from their work
- that it adds to their already busy calendar
- that they will lose the expert status that they have built over the years
- it brings in new processes, tools, and technology, and that new learning creates uncertainty
- lastly, this would be another wasted effort that got attention because someone higher up thought it was a cool thing to do.  

If you want success with data governance, don't go after everyone in the company. Be selective with whom you approach in those initial phases and how you engage. 

This contradicts what you may have heard from most big-name consulting and governance product firms about casting a big net. That approach will help their top-line growth, not yours.

I very much want to apply for this CEO role - unfortunately, nowhere in the job description there is any detail about the industry, company size, and other relevant info.

Whether this was written by a GenAI app or a human - this is a problem with many job descriptions. It’s ok to do a broader search, but at the very least it’s good to have information on the company’s business.

A search firm posted this - good luck attracting the right talent.

Is there a challenge because generic recruiters are writing JDs? We won’t know.

But if you are looking to hire for director and above positions across data, analytics, digital, and tech roles, then you may like the exec search offering from #datapreneurs
