I am a Data Visualization Expert and Data Analyst with proficiency in Excel, Python, SQL, Power BI, Looker, GCP and Tableau.

Other tools which I have worked upon is Microsoft Word, Power Point, Outlook, Siebel, CRM and Fund Monitor.

I also have work experience in Capital Markets, Payroll Administration,SAP, Application Support, Client Communication, Team Management, Process Training and Chat Process.

Recently I came across 2 problems for date fields in different tableau dashboards which I had to solve in order to achieve the desired result.

It's very basic but I wanted to share it with you so that it could help you in some way while dealing with such issues.

Scenario 1:

Requirement : Date field must be blank in case there is no date.

Problem : As per the normal behaviour of date fields in Tableau, if there is no date it will show 'null', one way was to convert it into string data type and then use the calculated field - IFNULL(date, '''').

But then the formatting is disturbed as we wanted dd/mm/yy only. Kindly note alias does not work for 'null' values and can't be blank, even if it's a string datatype.

Solution : Anyways it must be string in order to show blank in case no values, So I created calculated field -

IF date THEN LEFT(STR(date),2) + '/' +
MID(STR(date), 4,2)+ '/' + RIGHT(STR(date), 2)
 ELSE '''' END

All numbers in the function are index positions and should be changed as per the date formatting.

Scenario 2 :

Requirement : Dates are in string format in the dataset, like January'24, February'24 and should be changed to a date field.

Problem : Data type can't be directly changed to date type for such fields.

Solution : I used MAKEDATE function in the calculated field. It takes (yyyy, mm, dd) in number format.

MAKEDATE(INT('20' + RIGHT(date, 2)), 
CASE date WHEN LEFT(date, 3) = 'Jan' THEN 1 WHEN LEFT(date,3) = 'Feb' THEN 2....,
01)

I still think there could have been a better way to solve it and I would like to hear the same from you.
