On Thursday, I had the privilege of speaking at Programmed’s RUOK? Day event - a powerful reminder that #mentalhealth is not just a once-a-year question, but a daily commitment.

My message was simple yet often forgotten:
Yes, check in with others. But don’t forget to check in with the person in the mirror - yourself.

We can’t pour from an empty cup. 

Practicing emotional resilience gives us the capacity to show up stronger, kinder, and more present for the people around us.

That’s why I shared one of my own tools: The A.U.R.A Technique for Emotional Resilience
➡️ Acknowledge what you’re feeling (don’t push it down, name it) with kindness and compassion, then label it - say: I notice I'm feeling...
➡️ Understand where it’s coming from (context creates clarity) - what's the signal here - what's this telling me. 
➡️ Reframe the story (shift your perspective from limitation to possibility)
➡️ Action - take one conscious intentional positive step to shift your energy (it doesn’t have to be big; even small action creates momentum).

It’s an everyday practice - in our workplaces, our families, and within ourselves.

So today, I leave you with a gentle challenge:

The most powerful leaders I know have mastered two skills: 
When to speak up and when to shut up.

T𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥 𝗢𝗙 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗖 𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘:
Sometimes the most leadership thing you can do is say nothing.
• When your team is problem-solving (let them think) 
• When emotions are high (let them cool down) 
• When someone else has the expertise (let them lead) 
• When you're about to react instead of respond (pause, let yourself breathe)

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗔𝗚𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗞 𝗨𝗣:
But silence becomes complicity when:
• Safety is at risk 
• Quality is being compromised 
• People are being treated poorly 
• The right thing isn't being done

I learned this the hard way:
Early in my career, I stayed silent during a meeting where I saw a risk. I thought those more senior, and experienced will address it. They didn’t. 

That silence cost the company lots of money, cost relationships, trust, and ultimately, the project's success.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣 𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘:
Speak when your voice adds value. Stay silent when your voice adds noise.

Questions to ask yourself: 
• Will my words help or hurt? 
• Am I speaking from ego or from service? 
• Is this the right time, place, and audience? 
• What outcome am I trying to create?

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗻. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

The best leaders know that sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is nothing at all. 

And sometimes the most important thing you can do is speak up when no one else will.

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗴𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹? (𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱)

I see two types of leaders destroying teams:

𝗧𝗬𝗣𝗘 𝟭: 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗘𝗥 
• Avoids difficult conversations 
• Hides in the office during crises 
• Delegates everything, owns nothing 
• Present in body, absent in 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁

𝗧𝗬𝗣𝗘 𝟮: 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗚𝗢𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗘𝗥 
• Makes everything about them 
• Takes credit, assigns blame 
• Needs to be the smartest person in the room 
• Leads with fear, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁

𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀.

Here's how to show up instead:

𝗕𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛OUT BEING THE CENTER
→ Show up when things get tough 
→ Support your team's success 
→ Take responsibility, share credit 
→ Lead 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗚𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗦 𝗭𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣: Not too much, not too little, but just right.

•	Visible enough that your team knows you're there 
•	Humble enough that it's not about you 
•	Strong enough to make tough decisions 
•	Human enough to admit when you're wrong

The best leaders I know have mastered this balance: They're the first person you think of when you need support, and the last person who would take credit for your success.

Your team doesn't need a hero or a ghost. They need a leader.

𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁.
They wait for the “big moment” - a promotion, a major success, or a crisis handled well.
But trust isn’t built in grand gestures.
It’s built in the micro-moments your team sees every day.

That’s why I use something called the 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸-𝗜𝗻:

👉 Each morning, ask yourself: “W𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘰 𝘵𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘺 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘐 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮?”

Then act on it - publicly.
Because when your team feels trusted, they start acting trustworthy.
When they feel valued, they add more value.
When they feel heard, they listen better.

I’ve seen entire team dynamics shift in just weeks using this practice.

THE CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONAL’S SUCCESS FORMULA: Obligations + Behaviours = Outcomes

Everyone focuses on OBLIGATIONS (what you must do): 
• Contract requirements 
• Safety regulations
• Quality standards 
• Timeline deliverables

But the real differentiator is BEHAVIOURS (how you do it): 
• How you communicate challenges 
• How you treat your team 
• How you handle pressure 
• How you solve problems

𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘'𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗛:
1.	Strong Obligations + Poor Behaviours = Compliance (but poor relationships) 
2.	Weak Obligations + Great Behaviours = Chaos (but people like you) 
3.	Strong Obligations + Great Behaviours = Excellence (and repeat business)

EXAMPLES:
Project A: 
Perfect compliance, terrible leadership → Delivered on time, lost the client, team burned out

Project B: 
Good compliance, exceptional leadership → Delivered early, gained 3 new contracts, team requested next project

THE GAME-CHANGER:
Most companies spend 90% of their time defining obligations and 10% developing behaviours.

The most successful companies flip this ratio.
They engage qualified, skilled people - assume competence in obligations and invest heavily in leadership behaviours.

Your obligations get you in the game. Your behaviours determine if you win.

The question isn't "Are you meeting your obligations?" 
The question is "How are you meeting them?"

Because two companies can deliver the exact same project with completely different outcomes based purely on leadership behaviour.

But here’s the truth: ‘later’ is where trust goes to die.

When leaders delay addressing issues:
 - Problems grow roots.
 - Misunderstandings multiply.
 - Culture erodes quietly.

According to Deloitte, companies that delay resolving conflict see 𝟱𝟬% 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟯𝟬% 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆.

The most respected leaders don’t wait for the “perfect moment.”
They act in the present - not recklessly, but with courage and clarity.

Because every delay sends a message: “This doesn’t matter.”
And if it doesn’t matter to you, it won’t matter to your team.

After analysing over 100 projects, I noticed a clear pattern:
It wasn’t the complexity of the work that determined success or failure.
It was the consistency of leadership behaviours.

❌ Hiding bad news until it’s too late
✅ Sharing challenges while they’re still manageable

❌ Clinging to a failing plan
✅ Adjusting based on new information and feedback

𝗕𝗘𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗢𝗨𝗥 #𝟲: 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲-𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁
❌ Treating people as interchangeable resources
✅ Investing in relationships, wellbeing, and trust

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿:
✅ Successful projects had leaders who consistently demonstrated these behaviours.
❌ Struggling projects had leaders who only demonstrated them occasionally.

It’s not about perfection.
It’s about consistency.

Because your technical skills may launch the work - but your leadership behaviours determine how it ends.

Compliance gets you to "acceptable." But your clients don't want acceptable. They want exceptional.

Here's what compliance gives you: 
✅ Legal protection 
✅ Minimum standards met 
✅ Boxes ticked 
✅ Contracts fulfilled

Here's what it DOESN'T give you: 
❌ Innovation 
❌ Collaboration 
❌ Trust 
❌ Repeat business 
❌ Teams that go above and beyond

I've seen projects that were 100% compliant and absolute disasters: 
• Delivered on time, but relationships destroyed 
• Met specifications, but zero innovation 
• Followed every rule, but created no value

And I've seen projects that went beyond compliance and became legendary: 
• Teams that solved problems before they became problems 
• Contractors who became trusted advisors 
• Projects that finished early because everyone was invested

The magic happens in the gap between compliance and commitment.
Compliance is your foundation, not your ceiling.
When 𝘆ou focus only on what you're contractually obligated to do, you miss the opportunity to do what you're capable of doing.

The most successful projects I've seen had leaders who asked: "What does compliance require?" AND "What does excellence look like?"

Your contracts define the minimum. Your leadership defines the maximum.
