I am on a mission to change how people perceive Public Relations. In my 19-year career, I have witnessed innumerable episodes where PR was mentioned as a manipulative practice. Calling it as such can’t be farther from what it actually is – A practice that helps companies and individuals connect with their target audience based on actual facts, not manipulated nuggets of information. A part of this realisation has been through my stint as a journalist. I used to write news about government policies and had to see through loads of misinformation to bring the reality to my readers. It was storytelling from scratch. PR is not any different. 10 years ago, I shifted to PR. That decision transformed my life for the better. It exposed me to opportunities and challenges I never thought existed. From working with the world’s most loved brands to managing award-winning PR campaigns, from chasing journalists for stories to second-guessing clients, I have done it all. During this journey, I took notes of the gaps in how PR is practised. From sending half-baked pitches to following up with journalists incessantly, from relying on clients’ marketing content for coverage to banking on missed opportunities in performance reviews, things need to improve.
