My philosophy is simple: If someone won't give you what you deserve, someone else will. Period.

I learned this the hard way. Spent a year at a job where they dangled a promotion like a carrot. "Just do XYZ and the title is yours."

So I did XYZ. Plus ABC. Hell, I did the whole alphabet. 😭

When promotion time came? They acted like they had amnesia. Suddenly, nobody remembered our monthly check-ins.

So I quit.

3 months later I landed a job with the exact title and pay I wanted. Meanwhile my old job needed their entire team PLUS 2 new hires to replace me. (Not gonna lie, that felt good.)

They didn't see my value. But someone else did. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I wasn't asking for too much. I was just asking the wrong person.

Stop begging people who don't get it. The right company won't make you prove your worth; they'll already know it.

I accidentally started a newsletter that hit 1,000 subscribers in 72 hours.

Then I ghosted everyone for almost a year. 😭

When Unserious blew up, I wasn't ready. I thought maybe 50 people would care about my takes on internet culture. Not 1,000+ (now over 3.6k).

So I did what any rational person would do: I panicked and stopped posting.

The honest truth? Success scared me more than failure ever did.

I spent months overthinking:
👉🏾 What if I run out of ideas?
👉🏾 What if people realize I don't know what I'm doing?
👉🏾 What if the next issue isn't as good?

Meanwhile, my subscribers were just... waiting. Some even checking in to see if I was okay.

Now I'm bringing Unserious back. But this time I'm documenting the whole messy process of building a media company while working full-time at a startup.

No pretending I have it all figured out. Just building in public, one chaotic week at a time.

Sometimes you need to take a break to remember why you started. And sometimes that break lasts a year. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Who else has abandoned a project that was actually working?

I don't have college friends.

I went to school during the pandemic and ended up dropping out.

Most people make their core friend group in college. But we spent it in:
👉🏾 Zoom lectures with cameras off
👉🏾 Asynchronous classes with no interaction
👉🏾 Breakout rooms with awkward silence

I used to feel ashamed about not having that tight college crew everyone seems to have. Like I failed at some crucial life milestone.

Then I realized: You can't fail at something you never got the chance to do.

Now at 20-something, I'm learning how to make friends from scratch (à la Nara Smith). How to build community without the built-in structure of dorms and dining halls.

Will part of me always wonder about the college experience I missed? Yeah. 😭

But I'm grateful for the friends I'm making now. Whether it's through work, LinkedIn or Bumble Inc. 💜 

How are you making friends as an adult?

It took us 8 months to start the Stan Creator Newsletter.

8 months ago, Richard Lazazzera and I first talked about it. The timing wasn't right.

Richard left Stan. Then came back. And 8 months later, we finally launched.

First issue just hit 60k Creator inboxes with a 56.76% open rate. 😭

Industry average? 21%.

Sometimes a "not right now" is just the universe saying, "wait for the perfect moment."

Because if we'd launched 8 months ago:
👉🏾 We wouldn't have had the insights we have now
👉🏾 Richard wouldn't have brought his fresh perspective from being away
👉🏾 I wouldn't have grown into the Creator voice I have today
👉🏾 We wouldn't have known what Creators actually need

The newsletter we're writing now is completely different from what we would've written then. Better. Sharper. More valuable.

No fluff "5 tips to grow your following" BS. Just real Creator stories with actual revenue numbers. Strategies that work right now. Tools we actually use at Stan.

Richard brings the product insights. I bring the Creator perspective. Together we're creating the newsletter we wished existed.

That 56.76% open rate? It's proof that timing matters more than rushing. 🤷🏾‍♀️

What idea have you been sitting on that might just need better timing?

My newsletter comeback post hit 10K impressions yesterday. I almost didn't publish it.

I wasn't feeling my best when I wrote it. My inner critic was LOUD. But I hit send anyway. 😭

10,668 impressions. 7,295 people reached. All from a post I nearly trashed.

Here's what's different about my Unserious comeback this time:

I'm treating it like a job I show up for. Not a passion project that only happens when I "feel inspired."

When I first started, I tried to do EVERYTHING:
👉🏾 Guest writers
👉🏾 Website/blog
👉🏾 Podcast
👉🏾 Instagram & LinkedIn page
👉🏾 Newsletter

No wonder I burned out. I was one person trying to be an entire media company. 🤷🏾‍♀️

This time? Newsletter first. Build consistency. Prove I can show up weekly. Then maybe add other formats (and outsource the production).

The biggest lesson from yesterday's 10K impressions? Your "not good enough" work might be exactly what people need to hear.

Stop waiting to feel ready. Start building proof you can show up.
