“Just ask your CEO to post on LinkedIn!” is naive marketing advice from people who don't understand how B2B companies work. 🤦🏼‍♂️

The reality that B2B marketers face is that:

▪️ Most C-suite execs will not have the time 
▪️ Most Sales people will not have the motivation
▪️ Most other teammates will not feel confident enough 

Yes, employee advocacy and social engagement are CRUCIAL to revenue growth! At The F Company we get 5mil+ organic impressions yearly because our team is active on LinkedIn. We have closed €10bil+ B2B orgs through educational content alone.

But it's not about "asking" your CEO to post on LinkedIn. Instead, it's about:

Ever had a 💩 couple of weeks?

If you're fed up of the perfect lives on social this is for you.

I've had a couple of crappy weeks on the run.

This happens, at times, but for me, it has been the worst time.

This week was was the icing on the cake.

On top of a weekend of a sickness bug, I now have manflu too.

I've got watery eyes and runny nose, which means I can't get out to speak at events nor can I easily work from home.

My nose is red raw.

March was to be a month of refocusing and a big push.

Instead, I've had to take days off and fall behind with my plans.

I've also been seeing some baffling things on LinkedIn over the last few weeks, which made me question my sanity.

Darren Gibb thanks for the catch up last night.

As Justin Welsh said earlier this week, social media is a game.

So, whilst you see the feed full of people living their best lives.

Remember, a good chunk of it might be fluff - made up or glossed up.

It is a game.

A game of trying to be as true to yourself as possible, but also capture attention.

I'm not the 'fluff' police. 

Neither are you.

Don't compare your normal to others marketing sizzle.

I'm hoping this run of crappy ends before we reach April.

My nose and eyes can't take any more tissues.

Why do you spend time on LinkedIn?

#1 - Make real connections (friendships).
#2 - Grow my business (marketing and sales).
#3 - Grow my personal brand (be known more widely).

I personally don't enjoy formal networking. 

The whole forced chatting thing doesn't work for me.

I actively look out for and support people who are interested in genuine friendship and connecting.

Our growth to €2M+ ARR hasn't surprised me. 

But the difficulties of being a good leader have.

Being a manager is hard. Being a leader is even harder.

This is my first business. 

I've worked a few jobs before but I never really had a strong manager. 

And I didn't realise how important great management would be until I suddenly had a team around.

When you're a fully remote team of close to 30 people in 16+ countries it's EVERYTHING.

The good thing is, it's something you can get better at. 

If you're managing people my respect goes out to you 👏🏻

Here are a few things I think great managers have to do:

- Listen well
- Be a cheerleader
- Have difficult conversations from a place of empathy
- Ask for specific feedback
- Take clear action on the feedback
- Lead by example 
- Genuinely care about your team's life and health outside of work

There are lots of new SaaS companies developing partner programs to crack the CRM Partner ecosystem (mainly HubSpot).

There are two ways that I see this done successfully ➡ 

1. Attending Conferences (like INBOUND) 🧡 

This is a great way to get to know the big hitters in the space and collaborate with your target audience in a single room over multiple days. Everyone who attends Inbound is there to learn, and if you can fit learning about your partner program into their schedule then it will pay off if done the right way. 

2. Podcasts 🎙 

Lots of podcasts leaving the marketing agency universe and entering the CRM technical consulting universe to broaden their horizons. This is powerful for reaching the larger base of partners in the ecosystem, it is a small world after all. 

Here are my tips on how to develop a great partner program inside of a CRM ecosystem 👉 

⚙  Provide a demo account for partners to use, if we aren't familiar with the product we aren't going to sell it. 

🤲  Don't be a leech off of the partner's customers, add value to their experience. Don't just ask for leads from us.

🛡 Ensure that you aren't cannibalizing the service offerings of the partner. This echoes adding value to the experience for the PARTNER, not just the customer. 

Partners that do this effectively ➡  HubSpot, Kixie, PandaDoc, hapily.

When you buy leads from 3rd parties you don't want to get lucky

You want predictability 

A relentless pursuit of consistency

Not because you want mediocre results. You simply want to avoid boom and bust as you can't rely on that to find any kind of success

There's a few ways to ensure a flatline of consistency when you're buying leads, but it requires a commitment from you...

1. Buy leads from multiple sources

This removes the impact a single source can have on you in terms of volume or quality. This is one of the biggest issues facing small companies buying leads. They don't have the budget to spread the risk

2. Feedback results in real time

You do this so that you can address issues immediately (I regularly see scenarios where something has gone wrong and it takes 2 weeks for someone to realise and they've lost £10's of thousands) 

AND your lead gen partners can make improvements to their targeting to target the areas you're seeing success in

3. A blended approach

You can't expect all your lead gen partners to operate at the same level. Their results will differ dependent on LOTS of factors - Instead you want to recognise their individual average performance and create a blend from it. The key is to create performance buckets that each source goes into

Doing these 3 things will ensure a consistency of volume and performance that you can rely on

But, what about you? What's the commitment?

 - Budget, Patience and Proactivity 

You need the budget to be able to work with multiple partners 

You'll probably not see the immediate results you want from everyone so you might need to be patient whilst it gets up to speed

If you're not proactive things will escape from you and you'll be reacting to bad results rather than controlling them

Sometimes, you can't trust the numbers reported in the ad platform.

Actually, you can never fully trust them, but sometimes you simply *must* ignore them.

I have had such a case lately with a client for whom I am running ads on YouTube. 

These ads are a huge success, it took only a few days from the time we launched until we saw a huge boost in product-qualified signups. The effect was undeniable. 

Yet, we wanted to optimize performance further, and analyzing the data reported in Google Ads I noticed that one campaign (in-feed) has consistently outperformed the other (in-stream).

Honestly, I wasn't 100% sure about it. 

The in-stream campaign has so much more reach than the in-feed campaign, it just didn't make sense to me that it underperforms like that.

But I wanted to give it a shot. So, I turned off the in-stream campaign and shifted the budget to the in-feed one.

The result?

A near-immediate decrease in the number of product-qualified signups 🤦‍♂️ 

The lesson here?

Never believe Google Ads.

LinkedIn has tons of “experts” and "gurus".

But remember...

Never take directions from someone who hasn’t been where you’re going.

Can you help me?

I spend on a monthly basis around 2h searching for invoices and uploading it to my accounting system (Companio).

Additionally I don't have the ability to see on an automated way in a dashboard the monthly incomes or expenses.

So I want to ask my network two things, and specially those with a company in #Estonia: 🇪🇪

- How do you automate the collection of invoices from different providers? (eg, calendly, clay, notion, linkedin, slack, make, etc) so they are automatically uploaded?

- Do you use solutions like quickbooks to automate stuff?

Someone who owns multiple businesses and has managed many different types of teams and is involved with several different departments. I want you all to know, I can’t keep up with your acronyms.
