I've been a bit discouraged about something I'm kind of ashamed to be discouraged about.

It feels like an icky and vain thing to talk about publicly, so I haven't.

I've noticed that the reach and engagement of my content on here isn't what it used to be, so I've been getting in my head and losing motivation to post as often as I used to.

I’ve also been dealing with some other challenges over the past few weeks that have taken up my emotional energy.

But this week, I had a conversation with Gina Nacnac, and she asked me a very simple question:

Without much hesitation, I spouted off the reasons I do it:

- To validate our silent struggles, so other people feel less alone in their experiences and realize they're not the only one

-  To be a catalyst who unleashes what’s possible in people and empowers them to show up and shine

-  To inspire people to believe in themselves and see their worth and value

-  To share insights that make people's lives better and nudge them to show up in a way that is more purposeful, confident, and courageous

-  To share message-driven music with the world that gives voice to universal human experiences

- To build community and connect with clients who can benefit from the work I do as a keynote speaker, leadership trainer, and facilitator

- To celebrate wins and milestones - personally and professionally - and to normalize doing that, so other people do it, too

- To remind people that they are Somebody who matters and that they are enough

Sometimes I need that reminder, too.

That I am Somebody who matters and who is enough, regardless of what any metric says.

Sometimes we have to take a step back from something and ask ourselves why we're doing it to get clarity.

So here’s to reigniting the light within that sometimes gets burned out when we lose sight of what matters most.

Here's to sharing from our heart and soul from a place of service.

Here's to reminding ourselves that our voice and our message matter.

Don't let other people's doubts diminish what's possible in your life.

Five years ago, someone tried to do that to me.

It was August of 2019, and I was at a conference in Philadelphia.

I was a few weeks away from leaving my corporate job of 13 years to launch my speaking business full-time.

I met two guys who were likely in their mid-50s who wanted to tell me all about what they did and eventually asked me what I did.

"Oh, I'm starting a speaking and training business in September," I told them.

Without missing a beat, one of them asked me, "Well, what's your business plan??"

I paused.

Business plan?

I didn't have a business plan...

My first reaction was to feel shame:
- Had I made a mistake by not being more thoughtful?

Then I felt angry:
- Why is this guy I literally just met questioning my decisions?

I responded in a way that stopped him from asking any other questions:

"My business plan is to get business." 

I smiled and walked away.

That happened almost five years ago.

Less than a year later, I faced a global pandemic that led to a complete overhaul of my business and a traumatic car accident that fractured my back.

Since then, I've worked with companies all over the world, virtually and in person.

My speeches and trainings have positively impacted the lives of tens of thousands of people.

And I've generated over a million and a half dollars in gross revenue.

I think my plan is working 😉

Here's the bottom line:

Don't let other people's doubts diminish what's possible in your life.

Don't let their limited thinking limit what you can do.

You are capable of more than you realize.

The past month has been hard, but I haven't shared about it publicly.

I felt like I needed to get through it, to make sense of it, to find meaning in it first.

And what I once saw as an imposition and an inconvenience, I now see as a necessary experience for growth and healing.

For the month of March, my parents moved into our house to live with me and Bill while work was done on their house.

The renovations were supposed to take two weeks.

They took six.

I've always been fairly close to my parents, especially my dad, and have generally gotten along well with them.

But, after a few days of living together, I found myself getting impatient and irritable, annoyed that other people were always in our space and that Bill and I couldn't really be alone.

The deadline for the renovations kept getting pushed out one week, then another.

I couldn't wait to have my house back.

But, as time went on, I realized that what was at the root of my frustration wasn't a temporary living situation. 

It was the accumulation of unresolved conflicts and unaddressed tensions between us.

I had been muting myself, and being around each other all the time brought all of that to light.

When we mute ourselves in our relationships instead of expressing what we want, think, need, or feel, we create little ruptures in connection that make it harder for us to trust each other and genuinely enjoy being together.

I knew I had to get UNMUTED.

Yesterday, on Easter, I was hurt by a misunderstanding that happened between me and my parents.

But instead of ruminating about it and letting that frustration fester, I said something.

I spoke up about the incident, and after that, I shared thoughts and feelings I'd never opened up to my parents about before.

For the next hour and a half, my parents and I talked and listened.

There were tears and hugs and I'm sorrys and I love yous.

It was a day that celebrated restoration, resurrection, and rebirth, and I felt like that's what happened between us, too.

I feel lighter today as they move out and return to their newly renovated home.

I feel like everything that happened over the past month had to happen.

And I'm grateful it did.

Think about an important relationship in your life that's been ruptured by conflict, a relationship in which you have muted yourself.

What would happen if you took the initiative to reach out for the sake of the relationship to check in on that person and connect?

And, as hard as it is to do this, what if you approached that conversation with humility and curiosity, allowing it to unfold, staying open along the way?

What restoration might be waiting for you on the other side?

It's scary to unmute yourself.

But it's liberating, too.

I have an unusual goal when I speak on stage that I’ve never shared publicly.

My goal is to be what someone once described as a “soothing gut punch” 🥊 

To awaken people to new possibilities by making them feel a little uncomfortable but supported and encouraged. 

And I had the opportunity to deliver one of those yesterday.

I was the opening keynote speaker at HRATV’s annual conference and invited a room full of hundreds of HR leaders to look inside and be empowered to put themselves first.

To challenge them to…

1️⃣ Activate their assets (and borrow other people’s belief when they feel doubt creep in)

2️⃣ Advocate for themselves, their career path, and their dreams (get clear on where they want to go, how they need to grow, and what they do with gusto)

3️⃣ Accept the invitations that come their way (instead of being so quick to diminish and downplay themselves)

I was inspired by the visions they have for their future and moved by the strengths they see in themselves and each other.

And I had the opportunity to share a part of myself that was muted for so long.

My voice

Standing on a stage and singing lyrics I believe in my bones from my first song as a reminder to the room to realize their worth:

You are Somebody
You are Somebody
You matter
And you are enough

Giving my 9-year-old self the chance to live her dream as a singer instead of silencing and hiding it.

Staying on stage for the standing ovation that followed from a room of people who are the best at cheering for and elevating other people 🥹

And hopefully now a bit better at doing the same for themselves.

Better at unmuting themselves and showing up with courage and confidence.

Better at sitting with and reflecting on questions like these to step into a bolder, more UNMUTED future:

🌟 What if the thing you’re scared to do is the very thing that could transform your life and the lives of the people around you?

🌟 What if the thing you’re doubting in yourself is your superpower?

🌟 What might become possible in your life if you overcame those fears and doubts to do what you’re meant to do?

Here’s to doing the things that scare us and saying YES to the invitations life throws our way!

Sometimes your day doesn’t go as you planned but goes exactly how it was meant to go.

Yesterday, I had a plan.

✔️ Chiropractor
✔️ Spend four hours working on a few chapters of my book to be ready for a call today
✔️ Call with a coach
✔️ Prep for upcoming keynotes
✔️ Haircut
✔️ Dinner with friends

But when my sister-in-law texted me at 8:15 to say that she and my nieces were in town from North Carolina and wanted to stop by in a bit, I knew I had to change my plan.

Here’s what ended up happening:

✔️ Playing the Cat Taco Goat Cheese Pizza card game
✔️ Getting my makeup done by my 9-year-old niece Raleigh (who knows more about contouring than I do 😂)
✔️ Cleaning all of my makeup brushes with the girls in my fun brush cleaning spinner 
✔️ Visiting Uncle Bill at school
✔️ Going out to lunch together

We hugged and said goodbye, and I got home at 1:30 to start working.

I stayed up until 10:30 to finish writing, but I wouldn’t have wanted the day to go any other way. 

We’ll never look back on our lives and regret spending time with people we love.

Not ever.

So here’s to being willing to shift our schedule to make time for connection.

Here’s to creating space for spontaneity.

Here’s to prioritizing what matters most.

It was one of the kindest things someone has done for me, and I didn't know how much I needed it until it happened.

Most of us don't want to be "too much" or to burden people with our problems.

So we silence ourselves when we're struggling instead of opening up 🤐

That's what I was going to do the other day.

I was meeting up with my friend, Emily Plahanski, for an overdue catchup.
 
It had been months since we'd connected, so I was looking forward to hearing about her life and what she's been up to.

After we hugged, she asked me how I was doing.

I started to share.

I opened up about some of the ongoing stresses I've been dealing with, mainly related to my family, some of which I've shared publicly.

And some of which aren't mine to share publicly but are hard and heavy and have weighed me down for years, leaving me feeling helpless and hopeless.

About 20 minutes into the conversation, I apologized and tried to redirect it, "We're supposed to be here to talk about you!"

I didn't want to burden her or hog the conversation, given our limited time.

But, with love and kindness, she responded:

"I could sense there was a heaviness about you when we got here. You didn't seem like yourself. This is just what friends do!"

I teared up, feeling so seen, heard, and held.

Because someone saw through my surface smile and into my soul.

She gave me permission to take up the space I needed that day, to offload some of my burden to make it a little bit lighter.

Everyone you meet is carrying an invisible weight, an inner burden, but just because someone carries a burden well doesn't mean it isn't heavy.

Be the kind of person who is so present that you notice what isn't being said.

Let people know that you see them and that you are there for them.

Be curious about what's beneath their smile.

Invite them to share what's inside.

Because that's what friends do.

And be willing to open up if you’re struggling.

You are not a burden, and you don’t have to carry it alone.

It was one of the most intimidating rooms I’ve spoken in, which is why this comment someone left hit me as deeply as it did.

The room consisted of a couple dozen PhDs and other highly educated, intelligent people who are in positions of leadership at a university.

I was leading a full-day training for them about igniting intentional leadership.

And at the end of the day, I asked them to jot down on a sticky note what they appreciated most about the experience.

This was what one person wrote.

When we feel intimidated or insecure, it’s important to pause and check in with ourselves so we don’t make this mistake:

👉 Assuming we need to show people how smart we are and how much we know

Even the smartest people don’t actually care about that.

You know what they DO care about more than anything else, regardless of their title or tenure?

👉 They care about having genuine, meaningful, transparent conversations that make them feel seen, heard, supported, and less alone

And we don’t get to that outcome by talking AT people.

We get there by inviting them into moments of introspection, reflection, and connection.

We get there by connecting to stories of purpose and strength and character.

We get there by sharing our struggles with each other and opening up to the wisdom of our peers to validate us and guide us.

That’s why I spent at least half the day inviting them into conversations with each other.

Because I knew I wasn’t the only person with something to offer.

They taught and learned from each other as much as (probably more than!) they learned from me.

And what was most meaningful to them was feeling listened to and truly heard. 

So, the next time you want to have an impact on someone, start here:

1️⃣ Put your phone down
2️⃣ Ask them questions about who they are, something they’re working on, what they care about, what they’re learning, or what they’re looking forward to
3️⃣ Be fully present with them and listen to their response
4️⃣ Don’t interrupt or one up them
5️⃣ Allow for moments of silence or pause. You don’t have to fill every empty space.

If all of us just started doing those things, the world would be a better, more peaceful, more connected place.

And if leaders can’t even take the time to pause and listen or open up and share, how can they model that to the people they lead?

Here’s to creating spaces of genuine curiosity and humility that make it safe for people to show up as themselves and be seen for who they are.

That’s what all of us want, after all, isn’t it?

Borrow other people’s belief in you.

This is what can happen if you do.

17 years ago, I was the Wellness Coordinator at a benefits consulting firm in Baltimore.

I had made up my role and my title after learning about the corporate wellness field in 2007.

The idea of helping people be healthier and focusing on doing that at work intrigued me.

I read countless articles, books, and white papers, attended webinars and conferences, and reached out to interview thought leaders in the field.

I was eager to learn.

I started helping our clients with their wellness programs, and one client I worked with early on was an HR leader named Julie Develin, SHRM-SCP, GTML.

We clicked.

She was curious and wanted to learn what was working to help her employees be well.

After we’d worked together for a bit, she reached out to me with an unexpected request.

She wanted me to guest lecture the wellness segment of the Master’s in HR course she was teaching at my alma mater, McDaniel College.

And she was going to pay me $75.

I couldn’t believe it!

75 bucks?!

No way!

I’d never been paid to speak before.

I was only 24 at the time with very little experience and tremendous passion for what I did.

But what did I have to share with a room full of graduate students?

Julie must’ve seen something in me that I didn’t even see at the time.

So, I said yes.

✨ Because I believe that an invitation is an indication of a qualification ✨ 

Julie brought me back to speak to her class in future semesters.

Nearly 20 years later, I have my own business as a full-time speaker.

Julie and I often speak at and run into each other at the same HR conferences and end up on the same flights out of Baltimore.

We were together again last week after another HR conference, at a steakhouse in Boise, Idaho with her team from UKG.

We were reminiscing about how far we’ve come.

And how cool it is to still be on this journey together.

All of us doubt ourselves sometimes.

That’s why it’s important to borrow other people’s belief in us.

To trust that what they see is really there and to lean into that.

You never know where it might lead you.

Heading into therapy and feeling the words of this song, sooo I pressed record and here goes!

It captures the essence of this time of year.

It paints a picture of the new beginning, hope, and fresh start that comes with spring.

It’s been too long since I’ve shared my voice (my joy!) on here, so here’s a snippet of one of my faves.

💬 What’s something (big or small) that brings you joy?

I had just met her a few hours earlier, but the way she showed up reminded me of an important truth:

👉 The way we show up and treat people affects the way they show up and treat people

I was halfway through a full-day leadership offsite, and we took a break for lunch.

One of the leaders in the room approached me, and we started talking.

She had three of the most contagious qualities a person can have:

- Enthusiasm
- Appreciation
- Curiosity, a desire to learn

She had a twinkle in her eye and enthusiastic energy in her voice. 

She said that so many things were clicking for her and making sense.

She emphasized how much she valued the experience and how excited she was about the rest of the day.

She told me I was doing what I was meant to be doing.

And when I left that brief interaction with her, I felt elevated.

I felt more enthusiastic, energized, and grateful.

Because emotions are contagious.

And we get to choose which ones we spread.

Before your next call, conversation or interaction with someone, ask yourself these questions:

👉 What emotions do I want to spread?
👉 How do I want to leave them feeling?

Whether you realize it or not, the way you show up affects other people.

And you can be the kind of person who makes people feel like a somebody.

By showing up with enthusiasm, appreciation, and genuine curiosity.

I want to be more like that kind of person.

Something I do every time I speak is offer questions to help people think differently about their life, their work, and what's possible.

I ask questions to spark insight, to invite people to dig deep.

I share stories that validate and illuminate the unspoken experiences that most of us carry quietly but that many of us have in common.

I hope that what I share will move people to laugh and cry.

That they will leave feeling more connected with each other and with a deeper, wiser part of themselves.

💬 What are you grateful for today?

You never know how your past is going to show up in your future, but sometimes it can happen in the most unexpected ways.

My first job out of college was working as an admin assistant at an employee benefits consulting firm where I served as an intern during the summers in college.

I picked up lunches, did filing, took boxes to storage, and was happy to be useful in any way I was needed.

People were kind, and I was treated well.

But it was never a place I thought I'd be working long-term, just a stepping stone.

Most people don't get into insurance on purpose, but a lot of people stay in the industry for a loooong time.

I ended up staying at that company for 13 years, and it was the first and the only full-time job I'd ever had.

I left almost five years ago to launch my speaking business, and one of the coolest things I get to do is go back to the industry I grew up in and speak at events that my former coworkers and other colleagues now attend.

A woman named Nancy, whom I met and worked with nearly 20 years ago, invited me to keynote the NABIP-MD Annual Expo next week

Even though we hadn't talked in over a decade, probably longer.

You never know how your past is going to show up in your present or your future.

And you never know who's noticing you or paying attention to what you're sharing or how you're showing up.

So, treat people well.

Be intentional about how you show up in the world.

And be proud of where you got your start - you never know how it will influence what's next for you!

He messaged me on LinkedIn in March of 2017 with an invitation to be interviewed as part of a book he was writing called The Healthy Workplace Nudge.

I was flattered.

We connected.

He interviewed me and included my story in his book - the first time I was mentioned in someone else’s book. It was so cool.

I could sense a depth and wisdom about him that intrigued me and kept me curious to want to learn more.

In the years since then, he’s coached me, invited me into think tank opportunities with other thought leaders and innovators, affirmed me, and checked in on me.
