Data Analytics - Life is Short, I Use Python!

Some libraries are more specialized, such as Geoplotlib, which is ideal for building maps and plotting geographical data, and Gensim, which excels at topic modeling and document similarity analysis. 

Some libraries are more general-purpose or serve as the foundation for other libraries. Such as TextBlob is built on top of NLTK and provides a simplified API, making it easier to use, and both of them are for common NLP tasks.

Understanding Different Types of Databases:

1️⃣ Regular Databases (SQL): These are the classic ones, organizing data into tables like Excel sheets. They're good for structured data and use a language called SQL to talk to them.

2️⃣ Fancy NoSQL Databases: These are a bit more flexible. They don't need strict rules and are great for handling lots of different types of data. They come in different flavors, like ones for documents, key-values, columns, or graphs.

3️⃣ Graph Databases: These are all about relationships. Imagine Facebook - it's perfect for showing who's friends with who.

4️⃣ Time-Series Databases: They're like super-focused databases for time-stamped data. Think of them as perfect for stuff like tracking changes over time, like in weather or stock prices.

5️⃣ Super-Fast In-Memory Databases: These ones keep everything in the computer's memory, so they're lightning quick. Great for when speed is crucial, like in gaming or real-time analytics.

6️⃣ NewSQL Databases: They're kind of like a mix of the regular SQL and NoSQL databases. They're trying to be fast like NoSQL but also keep everything super tidy like SQL.

7️⃣ Object-Oriented Databases: These work really well with certain programming languages. They store data as objects, which is handy for when your data is a bit more complicated.

Each type has its own strengths and weaknesses, so picking the right one depends on what you need it for.

To be effective at #datastorytelling, you need to have a balance of data and business knowledge. ⚖️

For data professionals, I’d love to say read my book, and you’ll have all the techniques and concepts you need to succeed as a data storyteller. However, to become a good data storyteller, you’ll also need to learn the business and gain domain knowledge.

If you know the data but not the business, it will be harder to pinpoint meaningful insights that audiences will care about (relevancy). Without ample business context, you’ll guess what may influenced different anomalies, patterns, and trends you see in the data. I've seen what looked to be an interesting data point rendered completely insignificant by a simple bit of context. 

For business professionals, my book also won’t help you if you’re uncomfortable working with data. You don’t need to become an advanced data expert to be a good data storyteller, but you will need some basic data skills to succeed.

If you know the business but not the data, you may have an outdated or inaccurate understanding of how the business is operating and performing. Your business opinions or ideas will be weakened when you can’t rely on data to substantiate them. Increasingly, you will be at a disadvantage to peers with more data skills.

The sweet spot 🎯 for data storytellers is a mixture of data and business knowledge.

Both data and business professionals can move into this sweet spot.

Data professionals must gain a deeper understanding of the business domain. One of the best ways to do this is to have analysts embedded in business teams. If you’re on the ‘front lines’ with the business teams, you’ll get valuable exposure to how the business works and what really matters.

Business professionals can benefit from #dataliteracy training, which empowers them to be more confident in working with data and finding insights independently. 

It’s helpful if they have a support network they can turn to when they get stuck or need help. Providing business teams with a self-service analytics tool without ample support and coaching beyond the initial rollout training is a waste of time and money.

In addition, collaboration between data and business teams is another great way to operate in the data storytelling sweet spot. Business stakeholders and data analysts can co-create data narratives by leveraging each other's knowledge and expertise. This type of collaboration is great because both sides learn from each other and move closer to the sweet spot individually over time.

There is an understandable desire to share all the data you analyzed and every #dataviz you built when communicating to your audience. While intentions may be good, this often has a negative impact: your audience gets overwhelmed and confused. 

Instead, follow the principles of wayfinding—give people only as much as they need, based on where they are. By limiting the amount of information you share, you can ensure your audience doesn't miss the important takeaways, and you create mental and physical space to provide a richer explanation.

Hi! Sample rolling scenario against the benchmark (native column chart + native matrix table) 🔔

∎ Single slicer with last closing period (border date) based on disconnected table

∎ Overlapped column chart with 3 measures (only AC, only Forecast, comparative metric e.g. budget) - now it's 'more achieveable' through overlapped columns 

∎ Matrix with conditional formatting (different background/font color depending on wheter the date is after the selected last closing period or not)

In real scenarios - there is rather a low chance to place a column chart directly above the table to match the x-axis names with table columns headers. Nevertheless, it's more about showing the functionality of displaying different scenarios (or higlighting them accordingly).

If you want executives to use your dashboards, make all your dashboards look the same.

One consistent template repeated over and over (and over) is better than a mishmash of dashboard designs. 

The exec is jumping from meeting to meeting, team to team, topic to topic, dash to dash. There just isn't time to understand each dashboard if it looks and acts differently than the last one. 

Hodgepodge = headache.

But if each dash has the same design framework, the exec will know how it works. 

Over the years, I've developed a go-to template that has KPIs across the top, drivers in the middle, trends on the bottom, filters on the side. 

As an executive -- or any business user -- jumps around, they already know what to expect from the dash and how to use it.

That approach also makes scaling dashboards so much faster. 

This isn't rocket science, but I gotta say, I've seen too much mishmash mush.

Together we can make the business world a less confusing place, one dash at a time.
