Noticed a “helpful” comment that smells like a sales pitch?
Take a closer look...you’re probably seeing astroturfing in action.

You open a reddit thread. Looks normal enough.
Helpful tone. Confident answer.
Mentions a tool or brand almost casually.

If you don’t look closer, it passes.

But then you click the profile.
And the story doesn’t line up.

One week they’re deep into SaaS tools.
Next week they’re suddenly a power user of a skincare brand.
Then a crypto platform.
Then a productivity app.

Same voice. Same timing. Same “worked great for me” energy.

No real opinions. No friction. No mess.
Just usefulness on demand.

That’s astroturfing now. 
Quieter than before. Also easier to spot.

People assume karma and account age equal trust.
They don’t anymore.

Redditors don’t need proof. They need consistency.
They look for patterns, not perfection.

And once someone says it out loud, the spell breaks.
“You only talk about products.”
“Why are all your comments recommendations?”
“This reads like a pitch.”

That’s it. Game over.

Your name becomes “that brand that fakes it.”
Even when you show up honestly later, the stain sticks.

Astroturfing feels clever because it works once.
Maybe twice.
Until it teaches the community exactly how to spot you faster next time.

Short-term visibility. Long-term distrust.

The irony is that Reddit actually rewards the opposite.
- Answering questions that don’t benefit you.
- Real opinions that don’t always help the brand.
- Being consistently helpful instead of consistently promotional.

But that takes time.
And most teams would rather risk being exposed than risk being slow.

Reddit will show you who you really are...
whether you like it or not.

It doesn’t care about your branding.
It doesn’t care about your clever copy.
It doesn’t care if you’ve been in business for 10 years.

It cares about whether your ideas hold up when someone actually asks the hard questions.

You think your positioning is solid. Your copy is polished. 
Your product “speaks for itself.”

Post it on Reddit. Watch the thread unfold.

Someone will ask the thing you assumed was obvious.
Another will point out a contradiction you never noticed.
A third will call you out on a detail you glossed over in your marketing deck.

It feels humiliating. Sometimes enlightening.
Sometimes uncomfortable.

And that discomfort is exactly what most brands avoid.
