Camp Earnest

Welcome to Camp Earnest, a former summer camp in the mountains of northern California, just over an hour from Yosemite National Park. We invite you to visit us to relax your mind, open your heart, move your body, fill your belly and enjoy nature.

Camp Earnest is a gathering and event space near the towns of Twain Harte and Sonora, just two and a half hours (140 miles) east of San Francisco. We're at 3,500 feet of elevation in a ponderosa pine, cedar and manzanita forest with light snow in the winter and mild summers. 

Our 21 acres include a rental house, several cabins, two all-year bell tents, dining lodge, bathhouse with a sauna and cedar hot tub, a small outdoor amphitheater and a meditation and movement hall. Enjoy our fire pits and circles, or follow Stair Trail down to the spring fed Turnback Creek with lovely walking paths and a rock labyrinth.

Camp Earnest provides a relaxing place to stay and, during our events, chef prepared farm to table feasts made in the GP Lodge kitchen. We bring Good People together, produce and host facilitated conversations, programs and workshops that ground us in our shared humanity and hopes for an inspiring future.

We can lodge up to 20 guests at present and host your events for up to 50 guests, with additional campsites on premise or lodging through our friends and partners nearby.

Most of the enjoyment we experience over a communal meal is mostly about the quality of companionship and conversations. Good People is about inspiration, community and friendships.  

We consider Good People to be our best selves, when we rise above tribalism and explore big ideas.  

Here, we talk about things that matter, share opinions, insights. We're vulnerable, do our best to leave our agendas at the door and participate in the most enjoyable kind of community, laughing over wonderful food and drink.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Thinking of attending one of our dinners? These are ticketed events, usually $85 per person, inclusive of a huge family style feast, wine and other drinks. They are informal and unpretentious, hosted mostly in private homes, for about forty people. Corporate sponsored series are free, but attendance must be approved in advance.

6:00 to 6:45 – Cocktail hour. Hors d’ouevres are served.
6:45 to 7:10 – Organizer introduces the Good People community and principles, then a speaker who offers a 10 to 15 minutes story, concluding with a question for attendees to discuss over dinner.
7:10 to 7:20 – Organizer introduces a professional chef.  S/he talks about their menu, highlighting seasonal, local and organic ingredients. Main courses and side dishes are offered family style.  Guests plate themselves, passing large dishes around.  
8:30 – Chef offers up dessert and tea or coffee. Organizer moderates a popcorn conversation.

Chefs have included Brian Bligh of Chez Panisse, Hiroo Nagahara of Bao Hiroo, Ola Fendert of Oola and Anthony Yang fresh from stints at French Laundry, Per Se and Michael Mina.

Psychiatric trials rise or fall on the quality of subjective endpoints, unlike other types of trials that have “hard” biological data.

We offer a combination of computer based algorithms to detect risks to this type of data integrity, the clinical expertise and the availability of truly large datasets to improve reliability and validity of psychometric outcome measures.

The result of this is detection of signal where it exists. Our method has contributed to the success of a number of Phase II and Phase III trials and can improve the drug's chances of FDA approval. The increase in scale sensitivity can sometimes shorten the length of the trial itself and result in better targeting of resources.

For the last 22 years, I've built companies and communities in the Bay Area, bringing people together around meaningful conversations about art, technology, religion, politics and philosophy.  I've started a variety of businesses and served on the boards of several organizations.

In 2012 I founded Good People Dinners, a Bay Area community that fosters substantive discussions, usually over food and drink.  These dinners, corporate salons, overnights and retreats bring together professional chefs and speakers on a wide range of topics.  GP Dinners has  produced over 500 events and counting.  

In the fall of 2020, with partner Karin Johnson, we purchased a former summer camp in the mountains near Yosemite National Park. Camp Earnest's 21 acres include a rental house, several cabins, two yurts, two three season bell tents, dining lodge, a bathhouse with a Finnish sauna and a cedar hot tub, an outdoor amphitheater, a year round creek and meadow and a meditation and movement hall.
