3 unforgivable content mistakes big companies make

Avoid them to outrank them on Google.


1. Not posting blog content at all

Some companies just give up before even starting the fight.

There’s no excuse to not be putting out blog content on your site if you are profiting millions per year.


2. Posting social content intended for discovery algorithms

Content framed in a way that people are not searching for will never rank.

It’s just that simple.

What gets viral on social media because the algorithm pushes it is not what people search for on Google.

In most cases, you can reframe discovery content for search, in some others the topic will never make sense.


3. Not optimizing their content for conversions

This is the one that grinds my gears the most.

You’ve done everything right, from keyword selection to storytelling to being given a chance to rank.

But you don’t mention your offer even once and you don’t include any CTA organically into the content?

It makes me rage.

Your content is a medium to push your offer, don’t be afraid to share it.

99% of founders suck at SEO.

First of all, in SEO you get what you pay for.

Cheap agencies (below $1k per month) won’t cut it.

Any serious SEO project will start at around $3k/mo.

Second: SEO takes time. 

Expect results in no less than 3 months at best. 6 to 9 months is the average.

So, plan accordingly to this. Be prepared to spend about half a year without any short-term ROI.

If you want to run things in-house or know what your agency should be doing, SEO consists of 5 pillars:

1. Technical SEO

2. Keyword research

3. On-page SEO

4. Content

5. Off-page SEO

The more competitive your niche, the more you will have to invest in the last ones.

✅ First, fix any technical glitches on your site that could prevent it from getting indexed

✅ Next, churn out between 4 and 10 blog posts each month that support the money keywords on your collection pages.

✅ Pay attention to how your site is structured and link your content so it's all woven together. Supporting content should link back to collection pages.

✅ Get the ball rolling on getting backlinks, shooting for at least 5 top-notch ones every month. Aim them to your home page, collection pages, and articles.

✅ Make sure every page and post is fine-tuned to turn visitors into customers. CRO is your best friend.

✅ Every three months, review your efforts and invest more in the tactics that are paying off.

3. Optimize your pages for those keywords

4. Create high-quality content related to those keywords and link back to your money pages

5. Build backlinks from relevant pages on other sites pointing to yours

Do this for long enough, and you will eventually creep up on the search results page.

Now, when your most sophisticated leads search for your main keywords, they will not only see your brand as sponsored.

They will also find you as Google’s recommended first organic result.

And that, dear friend, will do wonders to position your brand.

A prospect once told me they didn’t believe in SEO.

I found it funny at first, but then it got me thinking about these common misconceptions:


1. SEO doesn’t work for small sites

You can do SEO no matter the size of your company or site, and even if it’s a brand-new domain. 

Results and expectations may vary, but if done right, you should be getting rankings sooner or later.


2. SEO works only for some niches

Absolutely false. There are certain niches that are more competitive than others, but any professional SEO will be able to rank your site no matter what market you are serving.


3. SEO is too expensive

SEO can be expensive if we only discuss the dollar amount of the retainers we charge. 

I think that’s not looking at the full picture.

Would you spend $3000 to earn $15000?

It’s a no-brainer, right?

Well, that’s an average retainer for an SEO, and that’s a reasonable potential boost in revenue from SEO for any validated business.


4. SEO is snake oil from scammy gurus

I don’t know where to start with this one. 

There are a lot of bad actors selling fake SEO services as they are selling many other services out there.

My recommendation is that you learn a bit about it (I have a book coming out next week) and then use that knowledge to filter out these gurus when looking for someone to work with.


5. SEO takes too long

Yes, SEO is not immediate as it is paying for ads. But SEO is persistent, even if you stop spending on it.

Results achieved will decay with time, but it will not be a sudden drop off as if you were to stop paying your ads bill.

On the other hand, although any professional SEO will give you an estimate of 6 months to start seeing results, I’m positive in many cases you can start getting revenue from SEO from month 2 onwards.


6. Paid advertising can replace and is better than SEO

Completely false. Paid advertising and SEO are different beasts, and in fact I believe they work greatly together.

One complements the other.

Paid ads are an amazing, but expensive strategy to get results short term, while SEO is a longer-term strategy with a higher potential ROI.


Finally, I’m not trying to convert anyone into an SEO believer, but I think every marketer should know that it is a viable strategy.

Whether it’s worth pursuing or not will depend on your company’s situation and goals.

But trust me, it works.
