I confess to being a little confused when Nikki Haley was referred to as a “woman of colour”, and had wondered whether this term had finally been expanded to include all colours,…that’s until I googled her. 

She was born Nimarata Nikki Randhawa to Sikh parents from Amritsar, Punjab, India.

On realising her Indian heritage, this all-American gal got me thinking about culture and the degree to which black and brown people can embrace the dominant culture and find acceptance, fulfilment and success in doing so. 

I reflected on the 1923 US Supreme Court citizenship case of United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind, when Mr Thind, an Indian Sikh, sought to take this beyond culture by unsuccessfully arguing that he was white (Aryan). The court was asked—

"Is a high caste Hindu of full Indian blood, born at Amritsar, Punjab, India, a white person within the meaning of section 2169, Revised Statutes?"

(Bizarrely, all Indians were referred to as ‘Hindus’ back then).

Thind was eventually granted US citizenship almost 20 years later by reason of being a US army veteran. 

Thind’s case concerned the notion of race not culture, but I couldn’t help but reflect on it when thinking about Nikki Haley in terms of how black and brown people are accepted or seek acceptance within the dominant culture. 

Taking on certain aspects of the dominant culture is natural, inevitable and can be very positive. It leads to greater integration. 

In a multicultural society it works both ways though. Monday’s ackee and saltfish is followed by Tuesday’s pie and mash or fish and chips. Friday’s chicken madras and naan is finished off to Beethoven’s 9th blasted from synched echo dot speakers. Beethoven is then supplanted by Marley & the Wailers, Sizzla and Chronnix. The next day it’s Kirk Franklin.

Being able to pass as white whilst fully embracing the dominant white US culture takes it to a different level though. I do wonder whether Nikki Haley would have been as politically successful named ‘Nimarata Randhawa’.

The name Nikki Haley, together with her cultivated all-American image, certainly made her more acceptable to the GOP with its white centred conservative culture. 

Her Sikh background is fairly innocuous. I very much doubt the same could be said if she were Muslim. But appearance is everything in politics, so I doubt she would have had much of a political career with the GOP wearing a Sikh turban or dupatta to cover her head and shoulders. 

There’s no way Trump would have appointed her Ambassador to the United Nations or in any role, wearing a dupatta, particularly as many ignorant white Americans would mistake her for a Muslim.

We saw what happened when democrats wore kente cloth and when Tennessee House of Representatives member Justin J. Pearson was lambasted for wearing a dashiki. Irrespective of the motivation for doing so, there appears to be little tolerance for cultural deviation in US political life, which may explain Nikki Haley’s image.

Trump and the Republican Study Committee, which comprises about 80% of House Republicans, called for the Social Security eligibility age to be increased in its fiscal 2025 budget proposal. 

The proposal sets the stage for an election-year fight with Biden, who accused Republicans of going after popular entitlement programs during his State of the Union address.

“If anyone here tries to cut Social Security, Medicare, or raise the retirement age, I will stop you,” Biden said in his March 7 address to Congress.

          Some excerpts: "(Trump's) most recent decision to arbitrarily reduce U.S. troops’ presence to a nice, round number by January 15... has only put the 2,500 troops who will remain in Afghanistan at greater risk. The situation was already bad, but he made it worse—just in time to hand the problem to President-elect Joe Biden.
       ...After firing and replacing three top civilian officials in the Pentagon, the consequences of the Afghanistan decision are now entirely Trump’s responsibility. Try though he might, the president can’t lay the blame for this last gasp at a coherent policy at anyone else’s feet.

Has President Joe Biden banned religious imagery from White House Easter festivities?

That’s what some Republican observers and Biden critics asserted in social media posts that derided him for deviating from tradition by banning religious themes and symbols from an Easter egg design contest.

Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem wrote March 30 on X: "Joe Biden banned ‘religious themed’ eggs at the White House’s Easter Egg design contest for kids, AND he announced that tomorrow is ‘National Transgender Visibility Day.’ Did he forget that tomorrow is Easter, Resurrection Sunday?"

The contest is new, but religious or political themes have been prohibited for every White House Easter egg event since around 1976, when the American Egg Board was created. 

As a federal commodity program, the board must adhere to federal guidelines that require it to stay neutral on politics and religion; programs or activities cannot be seen as lifting one religion or set of beliefs over others.
