But here’s the truth she didn’t know…

Confidence alone wouldn’t fix this.

She was 32.
Smart. Ambitious.
But every decision came with doubt.

“𝘚𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺, 𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘐’𝘮 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨,” she’d say.

She’d rehearse presentations for hours.
Compare herself to everyone in the room.

Once she told me,

“𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬. 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵.”

What she really wanted wasn’t confidence.

It was self-trust.

So we worked on that first.

• Building communication skills,
• Letting go of old workplace wounds,
• And practicing emotional regulation under pressure.

I modeled calm leadership for her.

Not command, but presence.

And slowly, she started mirroring it.

Her manager trusted her more.

She led meetings.
She presented to senior leaders.

After one of them, she said,

That’s when I smiled.

He’d tell me how quiet his apartment felt
after every video call with his children.

That kind of silence can weigh heavier than noise ever could.

At work, he was doing what most leaders do under pressure.

• Showing up,
• Getting things done,
• Pretending everything’s okay.
  
But his team could sense it.

His energy wasn’t there.

You can’t lead people when you’re running on empty.

So we started with what most people avoid.

Feeling what he’d been holding back.

He wrote down what he never said to his ex-wife.

He faced the guilt, the anger, the grief.

And then, we began rebuilding.

A few weeks later, I noticed something.

I got TRIGGERED at the airport

…and my body reacted like I was under attack.

Someone cut ahead in the security line,
mumbling something about being late.

It wasn’t personal.
It wasn’t even that rude.

But my nervous system?
Instant panic.

Tight chest. Faster breathing.
Judgment rising fast before I could even think.

And in that split second, I caught it.

Amygdala hijack.

When your emotional brain takes the wheel

before your rational brain even gets a chance to buckle in.

It happens more than we realize.

Not just in airports
but in meetings, tough conversations, awkward feedback moments.

And the hardest part?
It feels real.

Like a genuine threat.

But leadership and emotional intelligence
don’t mean never getting triggered.

They mean noticing when you do.

Pausing.
Naming it.

And choosing to respond instead of react.

Later, I laughed at myself.
Over a stranger? Really?

But I’m grateful for moments like these.

Because they remind me
awareness doesn’t always show up in the big dramatic moments.

Sometimes it shows up in line at the airport

With a breath,
A beat,
And a choice.

The moment I stopped reacting, everything changed.

When you start meeting yourself again

There’s a strange space that comes after every ending.
Not chaos.
Not clarity.

One of my clients told me recently:

“Rawan, I don’t know who I am when things are calm.”

That line stayed with me.

Because so many of us know how to survive the storm,
but not how to trust the calm.

We rush to rebuild,
to prove we’re fine,
to fill the silence with motion.

But what if that silence isn’t emptiness
what if it’s space?

Space to breathe again.
Space to remember what actually matters.
Space to meet yourself without the noise,
without the expectations,
without the masks.

That’s where transformation truly begins.

When you stop chasing “what’s next”
and start listening to “what feels true.”

not from perfection,

During one of my workshops, someone asked,

“I get triggered a lot, especially at work. What do you suggest I should do?”

I smiled because this is one the most common questions I get from most leaders.

The first step, I told them, is simply awareness.

You can’t work with what you don’t notice.

The thing about triggers is they’re automatic.

You don’t plan them.
They just show up.

And while you may not be able to control being triggered,

You can control what happens after.

Here’s how you start:

Your body always speaks first.

That tightening in your chest, that shift in your tone, that’s the trigger knocking.

Name the emotion.

Say it out loud, or write it down.

“I feel dismissed.”
“I feel unheard.”
“I feel threatened.”
