Monday Hike with Jordan, Anderson, Toni, and Aubrey. Entertainment by Caleb and running inspo with Owen . One of my favorite events of the week (just not long enough!)

Monday night activities with Shahram, George, Tosin, and the FC + Cloud Accountant Staffing crew. Extra innings with ✒️ Miguel Alexander Centeno and the Monster Mash crew.

Tuesday speaking with Stacey on automation + humans. Hanging with Jason & David. Meetings with amazing Intuit leaders Samuel Won and Alpesh Gaglani. More meetings. Observing Ping Assistant shenanigans. More meetings.

Tuesday night hangs with Ted, Jessica, Simon, Michael, and the accountant squad at Intuit. Capping with a lovely dinner.

One of the perks of conference season 🤙

It’s become tradition that anytime I leave for a trip, I’m bringing something back to the kids.

Some vendors know that folks are looking exclusively for stuff like this, so they plan accordingly.

Case in point, the Jirav giraffe was a masssive hit a few years ago and is living a nice long life in our kids’ rooms. Nice job, Martin Zych 🐼.

This year, Canopy hooked me up with one of the few remaining Account-O-Bots knowing that I enjoyed these LEGO sets with my son. And enjoy we did!

It made the open afternoon a little less taxing and a lot more fun 🤙

Here's a fun (and honest) B2B sales technique:

Teach people when NOT to buy from you.

I've found myself more frequently selling against myself in pitches and the opposite of my intent ends up happening.

I'll educate folks around when and why the right times to hire us is and provide a plethora of options to get things done really well until the timing makes sense on their end. I'll tell them that there are other providers/solutions that are more cost effective. I'll share that budget ought to be allocated to product / sales until a certain inflection point. The list goes on.

Until...it's the right combination of capital, growth, complexity, volume, etc. that we are a REALLY good fit for.

When I make recommendations outside of own services, I'm genuinely trying to put myself in that business owner's shoes to help make a sound judgment on the best path forward. By doing so, it starts to develop a trusted relationship (as we should seek from the first point of contact) and one that may lead to an opportunity on down the road.

Sales gets a bad rap and for good reason, but when managed through the lens of a relationship and genuine care & intentionality with the other person in mind...it tends to drive affinity. Shocker.

In networking / community circles, it seems to be similar questions over and over to the firm owner building a practice.

"How many team members do you have?"

"What's your top line revenue at these days?"

"How many clients do you have?"

"What's your tech stack / tech you're most excited about?"

On one hand, I get it and I'm often curious of similar questions to other firm owners. On the other hand, I think to myself, "self, what do those things have to do with the impact that we're looking to create on our team, our clients, and our community." The message that we preach every opportunity that we get.

I tend to interpret the number of team members question as some arbitrary measuring stick of success. As if the more team members, the more 'successful' the firm is.

Top line revenue? As a leadership team, we've made a conscious decision that those figures are between us and our team. This also feels like a question that someone is trying to use as a comparative indicator to their own success.

The first three questions, when posed by vendors, immediately shifts my mental state to - you're just trying to size me up to determine how 'valuable' I could be to your software on a per user / per client basis.

Tech stack - sure tech is cool and drives efficiency. This is definitely a more substantial conversation, however I always try to impress on folks that what works for us may not work for everyone. In fact, it shouldn't. Unless you have the same structure, goals, team dynamic, etc.

So why does this all matter to me?

Well, I prefer to (and often) have conversations with fellow business owners around:

Mental & physical health as a leader
Team culture and engagement
Impact and partnership with community
Innovative approaches to a changing services sector
Etc.

I'm curious as to how others interpret the initial list of questions and how they tend to navigate those conversations. Better yet...are those the types of questions that you want to be asked as a business owner?

Born to Run: An amazing journey into endurance running, a native tribe in the Mexican Copper Canyons, and an unbelievable race.

The Bomber Mafia: A WWII foray into some of the bravest souls that ever lived.

The Wager: Insane journey of seafaring, life in the 1700’s, and a story of extreme survival. Thanks for the rec Aubrey! 

In the Spell of the Barkley: Behind the scenes of one of the wildest 100+ mile races in the middle of nowhere TN. A story of human performance.

Of these books, my favorite was Born to Run then The Wager. Barkley was fascinating for a niche audience.

I consume these hours of audiobooks while running and try to find tales of endurance, performance, perseverance, bravery, and try to find ways to apply the journeys to that of my own. Entrepreneurship, fatherhood, and fitness (among others) are all arenas that I strive to be great in and I find these true tales inspirational to continue to move up and to the right. More to come next month!
