My parents are musicians, so I decided to be rebellious and translate and edit legal, financial and academic documents. Documents like: 💠 Contracts 💠 Insurance reports 💠 Notary instruments 💠 Annual accounts 💠 Research papers So why didn’t I study the violin? I’ve always loved languages, but what on Earth drew me to the law, finance and academia? ⚖ Legal texts mark some of the most significant milestones in people’s lives – births, academic achievements, marriages, deaths. They settle disputes and establish people’s rights and obligations. I’ve always been a bit of a justice warrior. 💸 Money isn’t everything, but it probably ranks pretty high on your list of priorities. Money represents security, freedom, fun and endless possibilities. For better or worse, money moves the world. And that’s exciting. 🎓 I’ve always loved learning (yes, I was the class Hermione). The pursuit of knowledge is thrilling. Breaking new ground is what moves humanity forward. If I can use my skills to be a part of that, then I can die happy. I like working on important texts because it makes the work all the more meaningful. There’s nothing more satisfying than working on a text that ✨matters✨. It means my work matters. 🔹 🔹 🔹 I was lucky to grow up multilingual, but language has always been my thing. When I was little, I used to carry a notebook around to jot down words I didn’t know (and how I hated not knowing!). I spoke Spanish at school, English with my dad and Estonian with my mum. My French teachers loved me and my classmates hated me (just a little though). I once took my Latin notes to our family summer holidays in the Lake District so I could study my declensions. 🤓 Thankfully, I’m better nowadays at separating my work and personal life, but I’m still a massive language nerd. 🔹 🔹 🔹 Current and future projects: 🌌 Preparing a workshop for translators wanting to get into legal translation. 🌌 At Academia de los Grandes Traductores we’ve started offering the legal and financial translation courses for Spanish into English (it used to be only English into Spanish). 🌌 Exploring plain legal language. Expressing difficult concepts in clear language is not only kind, it’s also good for business and it makes content more accessible and relatable. It’s like translation without (necessarily) changing languages. How cool is that?
