In 40+ years I changed my behaviour a lot.

Here are 5 ways to change SOMEONE ELSE’S behaviour:

1. FORCE

→ Threaten someone into doing something,
→ ‘Do this, or else...'

2. MANIPULATE

→ Trick someone into doing something
→ (without being clear on your own intent.)

3. CONVINCE

→ Make someone understand & adopt your point of view.
→ (This takes some discussion and back & forthing)

4. MOTIVATE

→ Create an incentive for doing something
→ (Like the promise of Money - or ice cream 😎 )

5. INSPIRE

→ Show the benefit and road to a change,
→ so people can make their own decision to walk that path.

Using 'FORCE' is a sign of WEAKNESS. 
Using 'INSPIRATION' is a sign of LEADERSHIP.

The past 40 years I've used all of them.

However, I found the most effective & sustainable way
is to INSPIRE.

Most of the times,
we are our own biggest barrier to start.

Having too high expectations or hopes,
will stop you.

This is why I 'frame',
my writing as an 'experiment'.

It makes it easier to write.

To live peacefully,
I learned - after 5 years of martial arts and
12 years in purpose driven business - that…

you need the ability to
defend & attack
at the same time.

You need to be able
to both farm and fight.

If you are an entrepreneur with a purpose,
you must lead people to a better future,
and change the status quo.
(attack)

But also protect yourself
against the temptations of big money
and some corporates lurking to stop your ideas.
(defend)

That requires agility and strength.

Some may think of this concept as ‘aggressive’.

But I prefer to be a warrior in a garden,
than a gardener in a war.

I did 1 experiment, with 2 posts. 

One WITH engagement, and the other WITHOUT...

→ Everybody says you need to engage,
→ for at least half an hour after posting. 

But, an experiment wouldn't be an experiment,
if you assume everybody is right.

→ So, yesterday I posted as usual,
→ but did NOT engage the comments.

Compared to a similar post, 
it got less than 50% of the impressions & likes, 
and about 70% of comments. 

❌  Not so good. 
✅  But less bad than I expected. 

PS. I'll respond to the comments today, 
because I love to keep the conversation going.

In 25+ professional years, I learned that,
the best way to go forward, is to:…

→ Experiment
→ Learn
→ Iterate

The exact goal is not always clear.
However, the direction mostly is.
So build a system to get there.

Just take steps.
And if necessary: adjust after each step.

For example:

Recently I did a test performance:
post & engage - vs. - just post 

But I did a small adjustment:
I engaged after one day.
(a suggestion by Stephan Seifert)

Looks like not all is lost
if you don’t comment back directly.

20 years ago, my university professor taught me:

this valuable design lesson that I still use …

A GOOD design,
solves problems.

A GREAT design,
can also withstand changes over time.

Scope starts creeping
and requirements change.

So, when you start the design of anything, 
Architecture, UI, business, process or product,
always leave ‘white-space’ or wiggle room.

Like in this Touch Screen User Interface,
for Robot Warehouse picking stations.

At the start I created a framework for 3 zones:

1. Action area
2. Package (colli) area
3. Picklist area

The design for the action area started very simple:

→ 1 big action button (happyflow: pick / pack / print)
→ 1 cancel button

During the development,
already three more buttons were added.
'Exception' actions.

After a year, the design was so loved,
that it was used in the packing sequence as well.

More actions and buttons added.

8 years and 21 revisions later,
the original framework still stands.

Of course I prefer the original, clean version.

But a design should support business requirements,
not the other way around.
