Let me share my short story... 📖

2014- 2020 👩🏼‍💼
I worked as a recruiter In London & Singapore- recruiting across multiple disciplines and from interns to C suite. 

March 2020 😟
Lockdown forced me to stop and think about my life and what I wanted. 
I was 33, drank too much and spent all of my time working or buying things I didn't need, thinking it would make me happy. 
I wasn't happy and after hours of trying to figure out where my 'happy place' is, I realised it was by the ocean (near it, on it, in it!). 

April 2021 🌴
The office I worked in was still closed, so I took the leap and decided to work remotely from Bali until things opened up again. 
I loved it out there: the weather, the people, the food, the culture and most importantly for me: THE OCEAN made me happy. I surfed most mornings, walked on the beach at sunset and on the weekends I could go diving/ snorkelling. 

June 2021 📞
My boss called. "You need to come back to London, the office is opening." 
Noooooooo. 
I really didn't want to go back to my small expensive flat, back to a packed commuter train, back to evenings in front of the TV or at the pub and weekends spent shopping for things I didn't need.

My freedom was being taken away.

So I quit.

July 2021 💻
I struggled to find a fully remote job and realised that it wouldn't be the same as getting an onsite job. 
Eventually, I created a working strategy and landed 2 freelance gigs, helping remote-first companies to hire. 

August 2021
Then I had an "aha" moment- Instead of helping companies to hire, I could use my expertise as a recruiter for remote companies to help people to land their ideal remote job. 
And so Remote Rebellion was born!

If you're over 45, working remotely, and suddenly you're "not adapting well to the digital environment."

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old who misses deadlines is "such a digital native" and "really gets our culture."

Yeah. That's age discrimination.

And no, it doesn't magically become legal just because it's happening on Zoom instead of in a conference room.

The exclusion is real. The gaslighting is real. The pattern of being left off projects, meetings, and opportunities while younger colleagues advance - that's real too.

Controversial, but true… 😬
The reason you've not found a new job after months of searching is not the state of the job market.
If it were, then nobody would be getting hired!

Now I'm not disputing that it's a challenging job market, especially in the remote space, but complaining about the state of the job market won't get you a job.
In fact, it'll have the opposite effect.

Why?

Because no one likes a complainer!

Working full-time and don't have the time/energy to approach your job search effectively?

They call today "Blue Monday" - the most depressing day of the year.

Post-holiday debt, failed resolutions, dark mornings, and the crushing reality of being back at work.

Everyone’s celebrating December’s job numbers.

Yes, layoffs dropped to an 18-month low. But zoom out:

→ 2025 still saw 1.2M job cuts (highest since 2020)
→ Hiring activity fell to its lowest level since 2010
→ Job openings hit a 14-month low

That’s just a reshuffle masked as recovery.

Companies learned they can operate lean. Many roles never hit job boards. They’re filled quietly through referrals, internal moves, and targeted outreach.

If all you’re doing is applying, you’re competing in the loudest, most crowded channel.

The professionals finding remote opportunities in Q1 aren’t relying on volume. They’re focused on visibility, relationships, and positioning their experience where decisions actually happen.

Wanna lose weight? Your problem isn’t that you’re eating too much; you’re eating the wrong foods…consistently! 🍩

People are working their butts off - they’re applying to hundreds of jobs a month. But they’re not seeing the results.

I have no doubts about the effort these people are putting in - but they’re spending too much time eating the wrong things and not enough time eating the right foods! [metaphorically speaking of course]

Here are some tips so you can stay on track:

- Send mindful, personalized connection requests instead of basic copy/paste templates.
- Tailor your applications to the role and avoid generic one-size-fits-all submissions.
- Show value before you ask for something. Don’t just hold your hand out and beg.
- Use AI strategically, not as a crutch.
- Get out and meet people face to face - don’t do everything online!

If you’ve been searching for remote work for more than 3 months without one interview, it’s the equivalent of skipping a meal every day and not losing any weight.

Something is off.

Prove it!

It's not just hard skills you need to prove, soft skills too. So how do you do it?

SHOW "I'm a great communicator" with a Loom video instead of a cover letter.
SHOW "I am good at explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences." by writing LinkedIn posts explaining a technical concept in layman's terms.

Get creative and don't just say you're good at something- PROVE IT!
