Industrial projects

One project was a peltier temperature controller featuring a stability down to mili-kelvin. I has been used in many different applications ranging from infra red temperature standard, temperature cycling of self adhesive tape and labels, temperature stabilzation of second harmonic doubling crystals.

One project was a temperature controller to heat a nitrogen flow up to a couple hundred degrees. The target temperature in operation was not to be measured by sensor, but had to be estimated from other parameters. Selfcontained, but additionally communicating with the PC, for parametrisation, visualization and control.

One project was a temperature controller to heat an air flow to a target meters away somewhat above ambient. The specialty of this controller was an extended dead time and multiple sensors to achieve stability. Even though self contained, it is communicating with the PC, for parametrisation, visualization and control.

Senior Hardware and Software Designer

The project was an embedded webserver on a small cheap controller. The controller was to be connected to a PC by the serial port. The PC was running a transparent middleware connecting TCP/IP to the serial port, and providing the services of the controller to the internet. The boot loader operated over http:// and was able get new firmware from a server somewhere in the internet. The controller could be inside a high volume product such as a drink vending machine. The serial link could be replaced by a wireless serial connection such as Bluetooth, Zigbee. Thus allowing to wirelessly connect to eg a drink vending machine and check upon its status with a tablet in front of the machine or remote across the internet.

Multiple projects in the context of modelocked laser systems.

A programmable delay generator to control a regenerative amplifier in the sense, that the device was running synchroneously to the modelocked laser, and allowed to cut a single pulse out of the pulse train at basically any repetition rate. It then was able to open the output of the regenerative amplifier after an arbitrary time. The timing was adjustable to subnanoseconds. The project included communication to the PC as well as a GUI to set parameters.

A modelocked laser can be synchronized to a synthesizer with picosecond precision. The developed hardware was able to operate at a fixed frequency from 10MHz to somewhat above 100MHz repetition rate. The repetition rate was adjusted with a servo or similar for the temperature drift, and with a piezo for the audio frequency noise. It was able to work with picosecond lasers as well as femtosecond lasers. The project included communication to the PC as well as a GUI to set parameters. After the configuration it was designed to offer single button operation.

A project in bioengineering
The state of a producing bioreactor had to be monitored by measuring the concentrations of glucose, lactate and similar online by extracting a tiny flow. In technical terms it was potentiometry and amperometry with enzyme based sensors.

A then ongoing project on implementing a reliable fingerprint reader into mass produced hardware required an acceleration. In parallel to evaluating actual physical sensors, evaluating competitor products to acquire, a fingerprint database was collected and proposed software implementation concepts were first tried and discarded. Then standard implementation concepts were developed.

The project involved development and implementation of a powerline communication system between refrigerated containers and their respective surrounding, either on a ship or in a port. The standardisation of this communication was then an ongoing process. I took part in this ISO standardization commitee. The MSDOS PC software part of the project was outdone by competing windows solutions but was still useable to develop, test and simulate the hardware based modems to be mounted on the refridgerated containers. The modems were adapted to many different refridgeration machine controllers, each having its historically developed protocol. The modem were communicating with a master modem using the standardized protocol.
The purpose of the project was tight control over the whole transport cycle to fullfill the demands of quality control across supplychains.
