Reshma Saujani is the Founder of Girls Who Code and the Founder/CEO of Marshall Plan for Moms, a movement to center mothers in our economic recovery and value our labor by advocating for policies that support moms. A lifelong activist, Saujani was the first Indian American woman to run for U.S. Congress. Her fourth book, Pay Up: The Future of Women and Work (and Why It's Different Than You Think), is due out on March 15, 2022 via One Signal Publishers. Reshma has spent more than a decade building movements to fight for women and girls’ economic empowerment, working to close the gender gap in the tech sector, and most recently advocating for policies to support moms impacted by the pandemic. She lives in New York City with her husband, Nihal, their sons, Shaan and Sai, and their bulldog, Stanley.

12 years later, the mission of Girls Who Code remains critical. I truly believe it’s these same women and girls who will leverage the power of AI and other technologies to tackle the biggest problems we face: climate, cancer, and inequality, for starters.

It was so amazing to visit my friend and hear her oral arguments yesterday for the Mifepristone case. It's so nice when you get to see someone you care about in all of their brilliance. The whole time I was just in awe and so proud.

“This perception that if you actually take care of families ... that somehow in doing so it’s antithetical to capitalism or that it’s going to be harmful to your business or your bottom line, it’s just not true,” she said. “I’ve learned that as a CEO, and I’ve seen this now as a social entrepreneur. In this fight for talent, in this really tight labor market that we’re in right now, workers are choosing to work at companies that see this.”

Reshma Saujani's mission to fix working motherhood

It’s true. We’ve officially got the data to show CEOs that #ChildCare benefits are good for their bottom line.

Our new report with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) looks at the return on investment (ROI) among five companies that provide their employees with child care benefits — UPS, Steamboat Resort, Fast Retailing (home to Theory, HELMUT LANG, and UNIQLO), Synchrony, and Etsy. All 5 companies had a positive ROI on child care, ranging from 90% all the way to 425%.

In fact, for every $1 employers spent on child care benefits, they saw a net gain of between $0.90 and $4.25 through reduced absenteeism, less lateness, and lower rates of attrition.

This is kind of a big deal. It means we can confirm that investing in child care pays for itself.

"Parents enjoy discounted nursery schools, baby products, groceries, health care, energy bills, transportation, after-school activities and summer camps. The province supplements national allocations for children with hundreds of euros more per child and vaunts child-care programs, including one that certifies educators to turn their apartments into small nurseries.

All of that, experts say, helps free up women to work, which is vital for the economy."

What Happened When This Italian Province Invested in Babies

This week, Moms First hosted an event at the U.S Chamber of Commerce to unveil the results of our new report with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) proving why investing in child care benefits isn’t just the right thing to do — it’s also good for business.

Our report looks at 5 companies that provide child care benefits — UPS, Steamboat Resort, Fast Retailing (home to Theory, HELMUT LANG, and UNIQLO), Synchrony, and Etsy. All 5 companies had a positive ROI on child care, ranging from 90% all the way to 425%.

How? It’s pretty simple: parents can’t work without child care.

Our study found that child care benefits can help individual employees avoid more than two weeks of absences annually, which in business terms, boosts employee productivity. Moreover, 86% of employees we spoke with said they were more likely to stay with their employer because of their child care benefits, which bolsters retention. In looking at these 5 companies, we found that retaining as few as just 1% of eligible employees can cover the cost of child care benefits.

In other words: investing in child care benefits pays for itself.

We Shouldn’t Have to Be Willing to Die to Give Birth in the U.S.

We are thrilled to celebrate Montgomery County, Pennsylvania for their new paid parental leave policy of up to 16 weeks for county employees — the strongest county policy of its kind in Pennsylvania. We applaud them for leading the way with a gender-neutral paid family leave policy that ensures all parents can be there to bond with their children. We hope other counties — in Pennsylvania and across the U.S. — will follow suit by offering paid leave for all of their employees.

I met Olivia Rodrigo last summer to talk about her #Fund4Good (thank you Aleen Keshishian for the introduction) and I was blown away. Blown away by her commitment to making things better for women and girls and using her platform to fight for us, even on issues that might seem divisive. She defined bravery for me. And then I took Shaan and my friends to her concert last week and I realized she wasn't just brave, she is an icon for what the future of equity looks like. Any fear I had that the world for women's equality was been broken apart right by right was replaced by hope and excitement for what is to come. Olivia (and importantly, her fans too) left no doubt that if they take one step further in eroding our basic rights, we will burn it down.
