I've been sending out applications for 2 months now, and I've only managed to land 1 interview! Considering how competitive the job market is, I expected more responses by now. 

People often say you need to stand out from the crowd, but I've always struggled with that concept. How can I create my own brand when I lack experience? 🤔 

Back in university, studying architecture, I remember admiring my professors' sketches. Each had their own unique style, while my work felt like a chaotic jumble. When I graduated, I compared my final design project with one I had received an F on. It was then that I realized it was time to start crafting my own brand (not that I was an expert, but there was potential). 🎨 

With this mindset, I doubted I could achieve the same in UX design, as I hadn't studied it at university. However, stumbling upon Ricardo Brito and watching Chris Do's videos on personal branding completely shifted my perspective! While senior designers may develop their branding more quickly and intricately, it doesn't mean juniors can't do the same. 

Now, I'm scribbling a single word in my notebook and underlining it three times: "STORYTELLING." I have some experience, a mindset, and I've journeyed to reach this point. I have a story to tell! ✨

Coming from the creative fields, I chased creativity for a living for most of my professional life. Even as a Service or UX Designer, I was seeking to be creative in my approach and solutions.

The fact is, there was little room for it. Too many constraints, too many boxes to fit into, very little creativity. Fair enough, business is business.

When we pursue creativity in environments or industries ill-suited for it, we must rethink our approach. For too many years, I tried to shape the reality around me so I could eventually make use of my creativity. I failed, badly. I did it for too long.

I see this in so many designers and creative types. We keep pushing for a cause without reconsidering, even if it’s the right approach.

Nowadays, I approach this differently. I realized there are moments in our careers, places, and times that we might make use of parts of that creativity - but living solely from it tends to be tough.

For me, what has worked is to create a life where I can use my creativity in areas where the constraints are mine and mine only. The market, the demand, my skill level - not artificially created constraints based on spreadsheets and business egos. That’s my coaching business.

But there are other types of creativity I cannot (and do not want to) make a living out of. But now I have the time and the headspace to explore them freely. On days like these, where I can paint with old friends and take time to focus on things that make me happy and allow me to express myself.

I stopped trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. I reframed how I could do what I wanted without trying to bend the reality around me so I could have a chance to be creative.

Chasing Unicorns - There's no ultimate answer to your career

Have you ever made a career timeline? This exercise will help you make sense of your career, find hidden skills, and create stronger professional confidence.

Where does your definition of success come from? Have you ever stopped to reflect on what it looks like and who it serves?

"As we navigate the journey of life, it's almost certain that we'll have to reinvent ourselves professionally, again and again. Our world is spinning at an exceedingly rapid pace – industries are evolving, job profiles are constantly in flux, and our interests and circumstances trail in this unrelenting rhythm. As such, learning to reinvent oneself professionally turns into a critical skill that enables you to stay resilient in the face of workplace shifts, thus providing you with a safety net for your career.
 
With the rise of artificial intelligence and automation, the nature of work, the workforce, and workplaces are not just shifting, they are being redefined. Add things such as an unforeseen economic crisis, global pandemics or warfare have shaken up any lingering perceptions of stability. Navigating the chaos that comes with finding what's next in your career.

I’m not gonna lie to you. Finding what to do next is chaotic, and frustrating at times, and can surely push our buttons and make us question our professional existence.

But that’s part of it. I invite you not to fight it, to accept these are not linear processes. On the path of self-discovery, you will be confronted with confusion, doubts, and things that no longer serve you and need to let go.

You will have mirages of what looks like a unicorn to only realize once again it's something entirely different.

Accept and understand the chaos that comes with finding what our future could be. Train your resilience, and be comfortable with uncertainty.
The faster you accept this, the faster you free yourself to truly explore and be open to what can be.

There are no perfect solutions, only perfect problems. In each question lies new information about ourselves that can guide us one step forward. Step away from the urge to find certainty in an uncertain world.

Cutting through the noise - Embracing your unique career choices

Navigating life through the lens of Ikigai can feel like an uphill battle, but only when we view it through our capitalistic, materialistic lens. Yes, ticking every box of Ikigai seems daunting—the search for what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can get paid for. And the brutal truth? This utopia might forever remain out of reach. 

It's not solely about finding that perfect job or career. It's a holistic concept about finding joy and purpose in our daily tasks, their impact on the world, and, ultimately, finding meaning in life as a whole.

Extend the concept beyond work. Reflect on your Ikigai in all life's dimensions. Ease the throttle on your relentless quest for the perfect job; there's more to life than work. 

Can your work nourish other parts of your life, even if it doesn't fulfil every aspect of your work-related Ikigai? Are you willing to make trade-offs?

Take a step back from that relentless pursuit. Instead, consider this an invitation to explore other ways your work might contribute to your broader life purpose. Could you find fulfilment in unexpected corners of life, or other ways to work?

Revisit and reevaluate your mandatory "requirements." Dive deep to uncover which ones genuinely matter to you and which ones you're willing to let go of. When looking for meaningful work, what's more critical? The daily tasks, the people you work with, the mode of your work, the overarching impact of your labor, or how work contributes to your life as a whole?
