If efficiency is all the rage in 2024, then how come I’m struggling to find any sensible frameworks to measure (and present) data team productivity?

I am finding some neat utopian articles from data catalog providers, but hey, half those metrics sound like features of said providers.. 😄

Either we magical beings with special kind of work that can’t be quantified, or I’m missing something dead obvious. 🤔 🤷

Please educate me. 💀

And no, not talking about "put a $ value to every dashboard" type of productivity measurement.

Spoke with a CFO that oversees a small analytics team. He said:

“It feels like [data] progress is slow. I don’t have visibility.”

Mind you, this person has a solid understanding of how the “backend” data stack (be it Salesforce or a warehouse, same same, different tears - fight me on that another time) works, which definitely helps in understanding the resources needed for data work.

The question I still have is, why?

On one hand, the tendency is to point eyeballs toward all the created dashboards, usage, pipelines, cost etc. Basically output and cost of output.

On the other hand, there’s attempts to put dollar signs against assets, or data products as they are called nowadays.

I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this whole topic. We measure sales on closed won, marketing on pipeline generated, product on adoption (et al.).

But since data is often not in the direct-impact zone, it feels like there’s an attempt to essentially do multi-touch marketing attribution for data assets.

Yet - the other common comment I’ve heard is “I know data work is valuable. I don’t need to see the granularities”

I don’t have answers or solutions, but it sure is a curious topic.

Maybe, there’s no need to prove your existence after all. Maybe it’s more fruitful on identifying what is the right thing to build, how to do it faster.

At the end of the day, aren’t we all just trying to deliver something useful to the business (as a whole, or to individual stakeholders). 🤷‍♂️
