I quickly moved from a contractor role to a System Manager role with the primary responsibility of leading a technical team of report developers using the IBM Cognos technology. As a system manager my focus was not only on the availability of the technology stack across twelve complex server distribution model but also in making sure that the business was continually engaged and delivering to their needs

A key success factor was a converting technology and reporting systems to the IBM Cognos technology and introducing new ways in in which to enable user self-service across the business.

Being my first corporate position, as a programmer using Visual Basic I was part of a niche team that built a facilities management application for private clients within a banking and financial services business. I learnt very quickly that business engagement is key to a successful product delivery and that clear value needs to be created and not just a feature list. 

This is also the first time that I learnt about the importance of extracting information from a system and that no matter the way information was entered into a system, all that remained data until a business user could draw value through analytical tools.
