“It’s never too early to…” was the theme of conversation today at CIBC’s Business Leaders Roundtable in Chicago with Dawn Cardin (private banking) facilitating a robust and deep conversation with family-owned and privately-held business leaders. 

While most day-to-day attention and activities focus on the technical, business strategy and execution, wealth growth and transfer, and tax optimization, the truth is that these highly successful owners and leaders desire more depth and guidance on durable family harmony in order to attain “healthy generational continuity™.” 

In addition to myself serving on the panel, it was rounded out by an outstanding G3, Jason Kozin of Fulton Asset Management, business operations specialist, John Krebsbach of NxTrek, and Becky Milliman (wealth) of CIBC. 
 
Topics included:

✅ development of a family strategic plan

✅ development of roles and responsibilities and healthy boundaries for both family and non-family employees

✅ integrating and educating family members who do not work in the business to understand the business 

✅ creation and definition of structure and governance to permit transition and succession to occur orderly + improvement of operational performance 

✅ the importance of and ways to achieve alignment 

✅ operational excellence as a new normal, and especially in pre-liquidity planning 

✅ coming to terms with “me” versus “we” in defining success

✅ etc. 

The event was also packed with great Chicagoland entrepreneurs and executives due in large part to CIBC’s Patrick Osborne (banking) and Christopher Quinn (family office).
