I ended my week yesterday with a physician leader who described us both the same way:

"Voraciously curious."

For many reasons, it was a game-changer of a conversation, and once again, it validated something I write about daily: credibility builds authentic relationships.

Relationships drive change, not transactions.

Thankfully, I learned this long ago in my healthcare administration career, and it serves me well today as I'm laser-focused on technology solutions that support care teams, patients, and health systems.

So, what are we curious about?

We are curious about what happens to patients after they leave our care.

We are curious about what nurses and other clinicians see that others miss.

We are curious about the gaps between what technology promises and what care teams and patients actually experience.

The level of curiosity I'm talking about isn't academic, it's RELENTLESS.

I've been described in my career as a dog with a bone, and I accepted it as a compliment.

My superiors knew I was relentless in protecting patients, supporting care teams, and improving throughput, access, and the organization's financial health.

The best health system leaders understand this to be true:

Safety and experience are not at odds with ROI; they are the source of it.

When patients are prepared for their clinical journey, and nurses are supported, and when care moves the way it should, we are healthier.

Curiosity is where that return begins.

Safety depends on leaders who never stop asking hard questions.

And never stop until there are better answers.

Be voraciously curious to make a difference.

We matter and must push for change. ❤️

I'm often told, "I'm surprised hospitals haven't improved this process yet."

My response?

I'm not surprised, not even a little.

Not because people don't care, because they do, deeply.

But because many hospitals are operating in a constant state of daily fire drills.

When every day is reactive, improvement requires something that's in shortest supply: space to think.

Instead, what I see and have lived for decades is this:

Paralysis by workload - there is no margin left in the day.

Growing spans of control - one leader doing the job of what used to be three.

A weak bench - no time to develop the next generation because today keeps breaking.

Decision fatigue - hundreds of operational decisions before lunch.

Competing priorities - everything is urgent, everything is important.

Apathy - not born from indifference, but from exhaustion.

Ineptitude in some - it exists and persists when there's no capacity or courage to address it.

Survival mode becomes the culture.

You cannot improve what you don't have the capacity to see.

And you cannot see clearly when you're fidgeting, mentally and physically, from the weight of everything resting on too few shoulders.

This is why meaningful improvement rarely comes from asking more of the same people who are already holding the system together.

Hospitals that are struggling are not in this state because they don't know what to do.

They're struggling because they no longer have the capacity to do it.

Until that changes, nothing else will.

Even the perceived "deep pocket" and "brand-name" systems struggle.

Relational partnerships matter now more than ever.

Some meetings make your day before they even happen.

Today, I'm driving down to the South Shore of Massachusetts to meet a nurse leader in person for the first time, someone I first connected with here on LinkedIn a few years ago.

In December, I wrote a post about the power of authentic networking.

If you know me, you know I value relationships over transactions and care deeply about making a difference.

I'm a good person, and I enjoy supporting good people.

That post shared the story of introducing this very nurse leader to a hospital that needed strong leadership.

What unfolded from there was remarkable; in two weeks, the conversations happened, alignment was clear, and a new chapter began!

Over the years, I've been fortunate to know many healthcare professionals and build a large network across the country.

Nurse and physician leaders are among them, and many trust me with discreet, confidential conversations about their organizations, their teams, and sometimes their next chapter.

With a few exceptions, I've never been a big fan of traditional search firms in healthcare.

I much prefer introducing healthcare organizations directly to talented leaders I know who may be open to new opportunities, thereby expediting the process and reducing costs.

That said, I also introduce healthcare executives directly to a few of the leading search firms when that path makes the most sense.

While I'm in Massachusetts for a few days, I'll also meet a few C-suite executives at the hospital where my colleague and friend now works.

There's no agenda, but an opportunity to learn more about their needs, share my gratitude for the important work they're doing in their community, and determine whether there are candidates I can refer.

I know many exceptional leaders who are still in their roles but open to the right opportunity, as well as others who have recently been displaced and deserve another chance to lead.

For the record, I'm not a recruiter and don't get paid to do this.

It's simply my way of paying it forward.

Sometimes, the most valuable thing you can do in your career is open a door for someone else.

I often write in metaphors.

I came across this article about oyster reef restoration and was thinking about how closely it mirrors what has happened inside of some health systems.

Colonists dredged away Sydney's oyster reefs.

These were not careless people; they didn't understand what they were destroying.

Oyster reefs were infrastructure, not decoration.

The reefs filtered impurities, stabilized the shoreline, and protected the entire ecosystem relentlessly, beneath the surface.

And when the reefs disappeared, the damage slowly became apparent.

The erosion and instability opened the system to vulnerabilities that were once withstood with ease.

Sound familiar?

For decades, we've unintentionally dredged away our own reefs in health systems:

Experienced nurses who held the operational infrastructure together.

Respected and trusted relationships that aligned physicians and leadership.

Other clinicians who round out the team.

What happened, and where did the time go to think, observe, and improve the way care actually flows?

One would argue these were never line items on a financial statement; they were foundational.

Without them, the water gets cloudy, the shoreline weakens, and the system struggles to protect what matters most.

Can you see why this article appealed to me?

The lesson from Sydney isn't just ecological, it's operational.

Restoration doesn't start with adding more on top.

It starts by rebuilding what was dredged away beneath the surface.

Health systems were never meant to survive without their reefs.

I left the MGMA keynote early today.

The speaker — an executive coach — opened by having everyone stand up and greet the strangers around them. Forced enthusiasm, forced connection, forced extroversion.

I hate forced extroversion. We don't do forced introversion on people, yet we don't think twice about "ice breakers" or "getting to know you" exercises. 

Here's what I've learned after years in physician leadership: the best leaders I know don't "break people out of their shells." They create conditions where every person — introvert, extrovert, and everyone in between — can do their best work.

Leadership isn't about vulnerability exercises in a hotel ballroom. It's about understanding what makes the people around you successful, then getting out of the way.

Some of my most effective colleagues are the quietest people in the room. They're not broken. They're processing.

Stop trying to fix introverts. Start trying to understand them.

If you believe partnering in healthcare is a numbers game, this post is for you.

You know I'm big on using my weekends to reflect on life. 

When I look back on the week that passed, I'm reminded that the progress didn't come from doing more.

It didn't come from volume or transactional relationships.

It came from focusing on what matters most in partnership with a CEO who "gets it."

Not desperate, but poised with expertise that is the strategic advantage.

My conversations were strategic, with the right people at the right time, and focused on their challenges.

I'm grateful I had a front-row seat inside health systems for decades, and I now celebrate my deep knowledge of healthcare finance, operations, and strategy, which enables me to have meaningful conversations with decision-makers when the stakes are high.

Because I know the environment well, it's easy for me to extend the respect and patience leaders and care teams need now more than ever.

Being open to learning is critical because "if you've seen one hospital, you've seen one hospital"; the variance matters.

Noise reduction is something I'm mastering to stay laser-focused.

Those who've worked with me know stellar communication and real momentum aren't built on volume.

They're built on relational partnerships, and this is where many have failed.

There's a difference. 

I'm grateful for your trust in me.

Now, I'm off to relax on this cloudy, cold Sunday in Maine. 🌟
