Sometimes the projects consist of developing software and web solutions over a few days or weeks, and at other times I will be employed to lead teams and develop processes with in-house developers for a period of several months.

BuzzConf Emerging Technology

BuzzConf looks like a cutting edge tech conference. And it is! A cutting edge, technology, futurism, and innovation conference… which just happens to take place at a scenic campground, rather than in a stuffy conference centre.

We felt that the very idea of tech conferences was getting stale and needed some innovating – and based on the response to BuzzConf 2015 – we were right!

The annual flagship event is a multi-day festival held in rural Australia that combines a social festival atmosphere of entertainment and camping with a traditional tech conference to create a completely original and engaging space in which to learn about modern, emerging and futuristic technologies. We addressed another problem with the traditional format too: we encourage families to join us, to learn and play together!

Over the course of the year, there are a number of social events and technology meetups that help grow the community, support ongoing engagement, promote collaboration, and help people meet and improve their knowledge and skills. With each new BuzzConf event the number of participants grows, and the opportunity to explore new technologies and reach new organisations continues to grow with it.

RateMyAgent Australia

As Delivery Manager I was responsible for much of the the architecture, design and delivery of RateMyAgents’ products - negotiating and liaising with stakeholders about costing, planning, budgeting, designing and resourcing the projects. I played a key role in defining the future of the products, and lead a team of 30+ product and development staff in Australia and Asia to achieve the businesses goals.

I was brought into the company to lead RateMyAgent's development team, and during my first year helped them grow from a single team of five developers to over twenty staff in three cross-discipline teams of developers, designers, QAs and BAs. I headed-up the development of a large number of green-field projects; defined best practice for development and the technical roadmap; and delivered continued improvements and scaling of existing systems.

Front End Lead

Australia Post

During nearly three years with Australia Post I was the Front End Lead across four teams working on the MyPost Consumer portal (consisting of 20 high-traffic applications like Parcel Tracking) and the senior front end developer on the Help and Support project.

I led the UI Core Project and organised the Community of Practice for 50 front end developers in order to facilitate sharing and developing skills across teams. In these roles I evangelised best practices and developed architecture and development processes for multiple business areas. This included a focus on producing reusable components, developing appropriate coding standards, adopting styleguides, improving quality assurance and continuously focussing on usability and accessibility.

The range of projects and improvements we made to our processes meant working with a varied technology stack. The front end framework of choice was Angular JS with SASS for CSS pre-processing. We used varied build tools (Grunt, Gulp and WebPack) to produce our assets, run tests and transpile ES6. During my time as Front End Lead I helped introduce a strong culture of quality assurance, with unit tests carried out using Jasmine and functional tests run with Protractor. 

My past experience with server-side development also meant I was able to contribute to projects such as the adoption of AEM, configure AWS, Apache and Nginx rules, and contributes to the Java APIs.

Trout Creative Thinking

I stepped in to this role to help Trout with a project that they had, to produce a microsite for Corrs Chambers Westgarth lawyers Graduate Recruitment drive http://www.corrs.com.au/careers/graduates. The website was a very modern build, based on SilverStripe CMS, using a framework of my own design to handle a number of exciting UI features including parallax scrolling video backgrounds, a video channel component, and of course a fully adaptive responsive design. My contract was renewed once during this short period so I could continue to provide assistance to their other projects, and I was asked to continue working with them after this ended.

Senior Web Developer

Visual Jazz Isobar

I have been involved in a number of projects at Visual Jazz, leading front end projects and development teams, and providing support and consultation to the other developers. I have been the principal Front End Developer for the ANZ and Sensis accounts and have worked closely with a number of other clients delivering complete applications and campaign sites for Australia Post, David Jones, Porter Davis Homes and Medibank. 

I was the lead developer on the Sensis redesign of  www.YellowAdvertising.com.au, liaising with back-end developers overseas as well as the Sensis team in Melbourne to deliver a highly responsive content-driven website. The Porter Davis build was Visual Jazz’s first Flagship Responsive Design site, and I was one of two senior front-end developers who worked on this project over several months. David Jones was another large project which I worked on, developing the iPad web application and their denim.davidjones.com.au website. The principal installation consisted of an HTML 5 application running chromeless on the iPad - connected wirelessly to a Node.js server running on a laptop that powered the 65" monitor and flash camera application; designed to spread photos and promotions through social media. A great application making the most of the great technology we have available.

Senior Front End Developer

Valegro Pty Ltd

I joined Valegro when it was still a very small company with just two developers. My ability to quickly grasp very complex code and deliver pixel-perfect standards-compliant translations of designs was noticed by our clients. Our productivity and the high quality solutions we were producing quickly earned us more projects and we were able to grow for the first time in the company’s ten-year history.

At the end of the contract I led a team of seven, responsible for the on-going maintenance of a number of high profile websites and the creation and development of new sites and web applications. 

Recent achievements include the re-launch of www.crikey.com.au and the development of www.leadingcompany.com.au, www.propertyobserver.com.au and www.thepowerindex.com.au. 

This role allowed me to develop and maintain a variety of large content-driven websites. I supported existing sites and applications and I was responsible for developing new features, applications and websites, leading the way with innovative ideas and creating and following market trends. 

In addition to front and back-end web development, I was at times responsible for project management from the inception to delivery; managing the team in areas such as recruiting, training and job allocation; and general management responsibilities such as billing and business acquisition.

Valegro look after around 50 different clients hosted on a variety of platforms including bespoke website code as well as Wordpress, and Joomla sites. Clients such as Crikey.com.au have over 3,000,000 page requests a day and so minimizing downtime and enhancing usability are of the utmost importance. I did this through monitoring and upgrading server architecture, as well as developing significant code breakthroughs such as an industry leading clustered database handler.

Head of Development

As Director of Engineering at Everest I look after our team of 60+ Engineers in Australia, as well as our portfolio of startup clients. I particularly enjoy working with startup and innovation teams where the tight constraints on time and budget force us to create high impact quickly.

I have worked in delivery and software engineering roles for more than 20 years - across agency, enterprise, startups, and public sector. I enjoy creating positive work cultures and managing and working in distributed teams across multiple timezones. I am an experienced coach, mentor, facilitator and public speaker with an interest in accessibility, inclusion, and emerging technology. 

I contribute to many communities as an organiser and speaker - including as the founder of the BuzzConf Technology Festival, and the Melbourne Web Meetup, and past organiser of the Australian Angular conference and Be Responsive meetups.
