This was the weirdest advice I received amidst recession of 2009, when I was jobless

“Get married, that might be the lucky charm for you”🙄

My brain went: Really?! So, career strategy = marriage strategy?

Ever heard the reverse? 
Hey, your relationship sucks, maybe change careers, that’ll fix it”? No, right.

But as an Indian woman, I knew where this came from.
Everyone was obsessed about me crossing the so-called “marriageable age.”

No one cared that unemployment was eating away at my mental well-being.
Still, I fought my way into Honeywell & GE at the peak of that recession.
Not overnight. It took 7 months.

And it also took a lot:
➡️To keep my mental sanity intact,
➡️To let people share opinion about what I should and should not do with my life.
➡️To keep facing rejections many times before I landed those opportunities that changed my life.

So I had 2 options

Option 1: Accept “the market is bad” as my truth and wait for it to get better.
Option 2: Build a mindset stronger than the market, and figure out what’s working in the market & Position myself for the same.

I chose Option 2 –
despite every rejection feeling super heavy and I was scared to take one more. I chose to think less & act more which included
✔️ Strategic outreach to managers I’d interned with & my alumni network
✔️ Upskilling when everyone else was waiting for things to “get better”

And in the process One opportunity came from my alumni network.
The other came from a manager I had interned with. I cracked both. YAAAYYYY 🙌. Felt super nice.

That’s when it struck me - Opportunities are ticking time bombs. 
They don’t care if the market is good or bad.

They land for those who stay in the process, not those who give up.
And that’s when it also hit me, in hindsight this wasn’t a strategy, it was a mindset I built.

Because bad markets will come and go. 

But the mindset you build – to focus relentlessly & tirelessly on what can work, and how to make things work despite the odds stacked against you  - That is inner work that- sticks with you forever.

And that’s exactly the mindset that helped me stick to my coaching & training business despite having a hard time making good money out of it in the initial 2 years.

So here’s my question for you:

After 300+ hours of interview coaching, I’ve noticed the same trap in mock interviews: they slip into Academese instead of speaking Businessese.

Quick refresher 👇

Academese = speaking like you’re defending your thesis. Precise, cautious, focused on methods.

Businessese = speaking like you’re driving decisions. Clear, outcome-driven, focused on impact & timelines.

Today in a mock interview with a Ph.D , one simple question exposed the difference in real time.

And that difference often decides whether a Ph.D. leaves with an offer or with rejection.

Are you sure you are stuck in career and not making progress ?

Sometime being stuck might feel like going around in circles, 

and it needs change of lens to see progress

Do you know why? 

➡️Because progress most of the time doesn’t look and feel like, the way we expect it to be. Isn't that what happened in your Ph.D too ?

And more importantly, we don’t consider progress, 
as progress when it doesn’t lead to immediate tangible gains.

So I had this beautiful opportunity to share my story with Sergej Kucenko through his podcast Science & Beyond  and I am also sharing a giveaway with you.

We touched on everything from my journey, to managing imposter syndrome, to what I think academia gets right, how I support career transitions & much more.

But the one question that always feels hard and was the starting point of our conversation, was: Who are you?

For me, that’s a loaded question.

Because at 42, everything I knew about career, research, and life has shifted massively in the last 5 years.

I’ve grown out of the person I was back then  a researcher who never imagined she’d one day make a living coaching others and writing on LinkedIn.

Those 5 years also taught me who I am not, and what I stand for. 
That’s why I call myself a Smart Dumb Ph.D.

I’m smart but I lean on my dumbness. Because it helps me learn, experiment, and attempt things that don’t seem realistic.

If you had told me 5 years ago that I’d be working with Ph.D.s from 6+ countries on their career transitions, I would’ve laughed.

And yet, here I am.

I don’t know exactly where I’m going from here. 
What I do know is that every choice has consequences and I want to keep choosing consequences that evolve me. 
So that 5 years from now, I’ll have even more “unrealistic” stories to share.

Maybe that’s who I am.
