4 years ago, I traded my office for the world, leading remote teams from anywhere. And later launched my coaching business for career remote work. People said it couldn't work: ๐ฌ "You need face-to-face for real trust" ๐ฌ "Remote is impossible for complex projects" ๐ฌ "You can't read the energy in a virtual coaching space" But here's what I discovered instead: 1/ RACI transforms geography into collaboration strength. 2/ Setting boundaries becomes your superpower. 3/ Remote equity requires intentionality, not assumptions. 4/ Strategic career mapping feels more honest when flexibility is at the core. 5/ Time zones: not problems, opportunities for flex work. 6/ Async-first communication kills meeting fatigue. 7/ Remote isn't lonely โ it is built on new forms of connection. 8/ Judged on results, not presence, is quite liberating. 9/ Celebrate small wins without forced fun. 10/ Genuine networking thrives without forced small talk. 11/ Mental health days need no justification. 12/ Honour your natural rhythm for peak performance. 13/ Finding your remote rhythm requires experimentation. 14/ Helping others build flex careers is my passion. 15/ Growth happens between sessions, not just during them. Leading digital projects while coaching others through career transitions has shown me: Wearing 2 hats hasn't diluted either- it's amplified both. I am Rita, a remote-first independent program director. I also help professionals transitioning to remote work.
20,000 followers! A milestone that means more than just numbers. 4 years ago, I left my corporate role to build something of my own. After years of driving transformation for global brands, I knew there was a bigger impact to make. Was it terrifying? Yes. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. What began as a leap of faith transformed into: โ Leading digital programs from anywhere โ Working remotely 25+ countries and counting โ Finding and building the best remote work community โ Helping dozens land their ideal flexible & remote roles But the real achievement is proving that you can succeed on your own terms. Here are 3 lessons from my journey: โ Your corporate experience is your superpower โณ Those years of strategy, stakeholder management, and driving change were pure gold for what comes next. โ Start before you're "ready" โณ Your experience is valuable RIGHT NOW. Someone needs exactly what you know today. โ Build your influence intentionally โณ Every milestone came from consistently sharing real experiences and helping others navigate their path. And beyond the number & lessons - These 20k souls represent real opportunities to make a difference. โ To challenge outdated workplace norms. โ To champion flexibility as the future. โ To prove remote work creates better lives. โ To blend life and work, not divide them. So, this milestone isn't mine alone. It's ours. Here's to the next chapter! ๐
I once measured success by hours spent in the office. Then I spent 4 months working remotely from my home-country, Portugal ๐ต๐น , watching my niece grow up in real-time while delivering my best professional work ever. That's when everything changed. Did you know 54% of workers would accept LOWER pay for better work-life balance? And companies with flexible policies see diversity increases of 4.9-10.8% in management positions! This is why I'm excited to share my latest blog post with Flexa where I explore how flexible companies & benefits empower employees to build truly integrated lives. ๐ฉ๐ฝโ๐ป๐ฉ๐ฝโ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ณ๐ฎ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐, the data is clear: 63% now prefer fully remote roles, while only 2% want office-based positions. ๐ฉ๐ฝโ๐ป๐ฉ๐ฝโ๐ป ๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐ฒ๐, embracing flexibility, it's a smart business. It creates more loyal and productive teams. The goal isn't work-life balance as a static achievement, but rather work-life integration. A continuous alignment between professional & personal goals. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eg_mJEap #FlexaPartner
Remote work made me more confident. It wasnโt always that way. I used to overthink every message. Waiting for the "perfect" moment to speak up. Over-apologising. Second-guessing myself. Last week, someone messaged me with: โHi Rita, sorry to bother you but I just wanted toโฆโ And it brought me right back. But after years of leading remote teams, Iโve learned something important: Clear communication isnโt a โnice-to-haveโ. Itโs the heartbeat of a productive, trusting team. When people hesitate to speak upโฆ โ Questions go unasked โ Projects stall unnecessarily โ Misalignments grow quietly And when we donโt address that hesitation, we accidentally signal that communication is disruptive. Letโs change that. Encourage confident messages like: โจ "When can I expect an update on..."โจ โจ "Could you kindly confirm..."โจ โจ "Can you please clarify..."โจ โจ "I'd like to check if..." Letโs build a culture where reaching out is seen as a strength - not an interruption. Because clear communication is doing the work. Speak up. Be direct. That's how trust gets built. I am Rita, a remote-first independent program director. I also help professionals transitioning to remote work.
You can have a life and a career. This isnโt a motivational quote - itโs my lived experience. After managing ยฃ500M+ in projects across 25+ countries, Iโve learned this: The most fulfilled people donโt chase perfect choices. They make intentional ones that honour both work & life. Here are 6 practices that helped me live that integration, not just talk about it: 1๏ธโฃ ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐ถ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ ๐ถ๐๐ปโ๐ ๐ผ๐ฝ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐น - ๐ถ๐โ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐น Whether I was WFH, a library, or a co-working space - one thing stayed constant: โ I chose companies that supported how I worked best โ Flexa is a great resource for finding these companies I protect 2 hours every day for life stuff - walks, phone calls, slow lunches. Not โsqueezed inโ time. โ No explanation needed - your time isn't up for debate โ Defend this time as you would any important meeting In the early days, I said yes to everything. Burnout wasnโt far behind. โ Now I say: "That's not possible with my priorities" โ Every "no" is a deeper "yes" to what matters Honestly? 60% of meetings I used to attend had no clear outcomes. So I cut them โ I redesigned reports and created async-first habits โ Focused on impact over optics - every time. Success used to be vague. Now I track: โ Work metrics and life metrics โ Because if Iโm only succeeding on one side, Iโm not succeeding at all 6๏ธโฃ 3 ๐ด๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ ๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ > 8 ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ๐ I found my rhythm (early morning + late evening bursts). โ No shame in working off-peak โ Just create systems that reduce noise and amplify focus Remember, Energy management > time management Track when you feel sharpest - not when you think you should be productive. Align your day around that. Your brain - and your people - deserve the best of you, not just whatโs left. How I led a global team from a jungle co-working space๐ด 3 years ago, I traded London's winter for Costa Rica's wilderness. Leading a team across 3 time zones wasn't just challenging - it was called impossible. They said distance would break us. That time zones would be our downfall. But I saw something different. I saw potential where others saw chaos. Here's the framework that turned our geographical challenges into effective remote collaboration. RACI: Responsibility assignment matrix 1. Responsible (R): Who's doing the actual work โณ Matched tasks to peak performance hours โณ Created context cards for seamless handoffs 2. Accountable (A): Who makes the final decisions โณ Established 2-3 hour leadership overlaps โณ Implemented async decision trees 3. Consulted (C): Who provides input โณ Set 48-hour feedback loops โณ Built structured input channels 4. Informed (I): Who needs to know the outcome โณ Centralised, accessible documentation โณ Distributed weekly progress digests While the RACI framework kept us organised, it was our shared commitment to understanding each other that kept us united. You can be: - Miles apart, yet mentally aligned - Timezone challenged, yet time-efficient - Culturally diverse, yet core united ๐จ๐ท Pura vida isn't just a saying in Costa Rica - it's my approach to remote work: simple, effective and human.
8 reasons you should NEVER lead a remote team: 1๏ธโฃ You'll develop too much emotional intelligence. โ ๏ธ Dangerous levels of empathy ahead! You'll become a communication expert. โ ๏ธ Clear messages are disturbingly effective. Your team will gain unprecedented autonomy. Results over presence becomes the norm. You'll get really good at trusting people. โ ๏ธ No more comforting micromanagement. Your meetings will become purposeful and efficient. โ ๏ธ Say goodbye to unnecessary Zoom calls. 6๏ธโฃ You'll develop global cultural intelligence. Different perspectives make you too adaptable. Your documentation will become exceptional. โ ๏ธ Transparent knowledge-sharing might eliminate silos. Your leadership skills will transfer to any environment. You'll be too valuable everywhere. Leading ยฃ500M+ projects taught me that remote leadership isn't just about managing from afar. The shift taught me 3 lessons: โณ True leadership is about building equitable spaces. Intentional connection matters more than proximity. โณ Transparent communication scales trust automatically. Remote leadership isn't limiting It's just good leadership, anywhere. I am Rita, a remote-first independent program director. I also help professionals transitioning to remote work.
This company started at Denny's restaurant. Today, they let 29,000 employees have flexibility without mandates ๐ NVIDIA isn't just winning the AI game. They're winning the remote & flexible workplace. And they did it without forcing office presence. No mandates. No tracking. Just trust. And results. While tech giants force RTO, NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang maintains "no issue" with remote & flexible work. The approach is refreshingly different: โ No mandated office returns - ever โ Teams decide their own flexibility model โ Stylish office spaces that people can choose to use โ Added 6,000+ employees while maintaining flexibility โ Scaled AI & Engineering remote roles against the trend Oh and they grew to $1T+ valuation and outperformed 92% of S&P 500 companies over 5 years. Most companies try to control where work happens. NVIDIA focuses on value and impact. โ ๐ง๐ฟ๐๐๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ด - When people feel trusted to choose how and where they work, they show up stronger. โ ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐ถ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ผ๐ฝ๐น๐ฒ - Top talent isn't just looking for a paycheck. And the BEST tech remote-friendly company in 2025 is... NVIDIA ๐โก According to Indeed's latest analysis of 90 top remote & remote-friendly companies, NVIDIA tops the well-being score - making it the leader for remote tech workers! Why NVIDIA stands out: โ Parental leave that supports real families โ Wellbeing score of 82/100 (highest in tech!) โ Flexible work arrangements that actually work โ Student loan repayment that makes a difference โ Tuition reimbursement that's genuinely accessible โ Remote roles across engineering, AI & data science Today, it isn't just about working remotely anymore - it's about finding companies that really support your whole life while giving you the flexibility you need. Other top tech companies for remote work: - IBM - With global remote options - Yahoo! Inc. - With flexible schedules - Microsoft - With flexible & remote work - Salesforce - With global remote options - Dropbox - With 90/10 remote work rule - Coursera - With unlimited PTO (yes, really!) - Atlassian - With their "Team Anywhere" approach - HubSpot - Prioritising your choice (home, flex, office.) I've seen firsthand how the right remote culture transforms work-life integration. It's not just about policies. It's about doing great work, your way. Which of these companies would you want to work for? โ Follow (Rita Batalha) for remote work & career growth.
It's impossible to secure a remote job without a network. I've honestly never disagreed with a statement more. I've landed fully remote roles at top companies without knowing a single person ๐คท๐ฝโโ๏ธ The truth is you don't need a vast network to land a remote (though, and of course having one can certainly be advantageous!) So youโre flying solo in the networking department, what you need is strategic positioning and intentional outreach. Here's what actually worked for me: 1๏ธโฃ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐น ๐ฐ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ผ๐ป ๐บ๐ ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ I knew my consulting background was highly relevant to tech and FMCG/Retail โ so I doubled down on those. I revamped my credentials with measurable wins and key projects to help my strengths. Clarity beats visibility. If you're speaking to everyone, you're speaking to no one. Instead of spreading across all platforms, I anchored all my content on Medium โ now over 1K followers. Each post addresses real industry pain points, trends, or innovations. When I meet new companies, I integrate relevant articles into the talk โ not just opinions, but proof of thinking. It's not about being "everywhere." It's about being where you're trusted. Forget just CVs and PDFs. I built a Notion portal that showcases my neutralised business cases, outcomes, and process. I use a base template, but each version is personalised to reflect the specific client, role, or company: their priorities, scope, and language. Not mine. A tailored portfolio shows you're already thinking like part of the team. I set up Calendly workflows with purpose: virtual coffee chats, intro calls, closing convos - each with a short form to capture context and filter noise. This made my connections and time focused on ROI and data-driven, not random. ๐๐พ Systems create scale โ even in relationships. I didn't try to be seen everywhere - just in the right rooms. I joined 2โ3 live industry conversations each week (webinars, social media, and yes, intentional 1:1 chats). I explored Slack communities outside the LinkedIn bubble - places where decision-makers talk shop. Visibility without relevance is just noise. I chose relevance. You don't need a massive network to land remote roles. You need clarity, credibility, and consistency. If you're applying blindly or waiting to "get discovered," you're playing someone else's game. Start building your own. I am Rita, a remote-first independent program director. I also help professionals transitioning to remote work.
When I quit corporate, I didnโt know my own worth. I knew what I didn't want but couldn't articulate my unique value. Looking back, I already had valuable experience in: โ Driving digital & IT adoption across diverse markets โ Delivering multi-million transformation programmes โ Leading cross-functional remote & distributed teams โ Designing governance frameworks for agility & speed Yet, when asked what my unique value was... I froze. I couldn't answer with confidence. Not in a way that felt authentic. Not in a way that set me apart. I thought my hard work would speak for itself. That decision-makers would notice. That opportunities would find me. Spoiler: Some did. Others didn't. If I wanted to grow consistently, I had to become my biggest advocate. And that meant learning how to: โ Own my value โ Communicate it clearly โ Build relationships intentionally Once I embraced this mindset shift, everything changed. Since then, I've: โจ Built my solo career working with top-tier brands โจ Led ยฃ500M+ in projects, 100% remotely โจ Worked from 25+ countries & epic cities โจ Coached 60+ professionals on remote careers And the most important lesson has been: You don't need to wait until you feel "ready". Career pivots aren't detours - they're pathways to possibility. What feels like uncertainty today is actually the necessary discomfort that precedes growth. Your value isn't diminished when changing direction but amplified through the unique lens of your skills & experiences, creating something companies deeply need but you don't know that yet. So go for it... (but with a good strategy please)
Most people treat coffee chats like friendly small talk. Thatโs why they go nowhere. I used to do the same. When I first went solo and remote, I set a goal: connect with people I admire across industries and countries. But early on, those chats felt... flat. Polite, but forgettable. Until I made a mindset shift: Treat every conversation as a strategic opportunity - not a pitch, but a genuine connection with purpose. โจ Hereโs the guide I use to turn 1:1 chats into opportunities: 1๏ธโฃ ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ Define exactly what I was seeking - insight? intros? โ This helped me write intentional outreach messages โ And tailor the convo beyond generic questions Strategic clarity Instead of a long background dump, Iโd open with: โ What Iโm exploring โ Why their perspective felt timely โ The dots Iโm trying to connect People don't engage because of your credentials โ they engage because they see themselves in your journey. Would I be a fit?โ I ask: โ โIf you were in my shoes, what would you focus on? Where do you think I might hit roadblocks? What skills stood out when you did X?โ And Iโd always ask: โIs there anything youโre currently navigating where I might be helpful?โ 4๏ธโฃ ๐๐ผ๐ปโ๐ ๐ท๐๐๐ ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ - ๐บ๐ฎ๐ฝ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บ I donโt just end with โanyone else I should meet?โ I ask: โ โWhoโs shaped your thinking lately? Where are the conversations happening? Is there a community or space youโd recommend?โ This wasnโt just about getting hired. It was about getting remembered. This approach helped me: โ Land remote transformation projects from anywhere โ Reposition into new scopes, industries and markets โ Get direct intros to hiring leads - without applying cold โ Helping 60+ people navigate their career transitions to remote work with confidence And the best part? It felt authentic. Because it was. When done right, these convos donโt just open doors - they open alignment. Remember: A coffee chat without strategy is just caffeine and conversation. But with intention, it becomes the gateway to your next opportunity. Thatโs where the magic happens. I am Rita, a remote-first independent program director. I also help professionals transitioning to remote work.
